My wife and I stayed for 2 nights at The Bunyip Retreat for our 20th wedding anniversary and we had a thoroughly enjoyable time.
Marina and Rob were wonderful hosts and catered to our every need. We asked that they provide breakfasts and dinners for us and all of their food was superb. The locally sourced eye fillet for dinner was a standout.
The apartment accommodation was modern and minimalist but well setup and the bed was very comfortable. Views over the Scenic Rim Valley were awesome and there was ample room on the grounds to maintain privacy if needed.
The Great Room was a terrific shared central area for all guests and was a real highlight of our stay. The indoor fireplace is warming but there is also an outdoor fire pit to enjoy in the right weather.
Rob and Marina are happy to share their stories as well as to give advice on local experiences and places to visit. Rob even got his telescope out for us on one clear night, which was awesome.
We hope they get some rain soon to green the estate up, but we still had a fabulous time and recommend highly for a kid free couples escape. This was the R&R we were looking for.

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our 3 day break, we couldn't believe our luck in finding this slice of heaven. The views as the sun sets are sublime, the food is sooooo good, and the apartment accommodation is perfect, for romance, relaxation and rejuvenation. Great walks are not far, which reward your efforts on the ascent with expansive views. The bonfire at sunset is perfect as the sun slowly sinks below the horizon. Thoroughly recommend this, would love to go back

We stayed mid week for our anniversary but found that the place was not really "open for business". We were the only couple booked in and the owners were both catching up from a busy weekend and both left the property all afternoon. All the chairs at the outdoor seating were propped up and cushions were missing, pillowcases were missing from our bedding. I would have liked to use the pool but the cleaner was in it. I also would have liked to get my husband a massage but as no one was there that wasn't possible. Someone turned up to take photos and make enquires which was really awkward as we were the only ones there. I enquired about whether breakfast was included by email and received no reply. My husband enquired again in the morning to a confusing reply. I understand people may not be at the top of their game but this was definately not a luxury lodge experience, and we feel that we had paid enough money for a higher than average experience. The room was cold and undecorated and the whole place although it had a nice view, had no atmosphere. The mezzanine level where we slept was so hot that night and we couldn't open windows.

We were seated in a nice large room for dinner, but 2 of us in a room that would seat 120 people just felt awkward, we would have preferred dinner at our room. I was expecting more from the great reviews.

This is a luxury B&B masquerading as a luxury lodge. On one hand it's a credit to the owners that they manage to do everything themselves. On the other hand it's a bit disconcerting that the same two people cook the meals, clean the toilets, mow the lawn and do the massage. It is also impossible to meet the standards set by the many other very impressive lodges in Australia and New Zealand without professional chefs and caretakers.
There is no lunch, snacks or afternoon tea provided and the 'lodge' is entirely B.Y.O. In such a remote location we were left feeling famished and rather desperate for dinner to be served.

We luckily stumbled across some fine print on the website that alerted us that the 'lodge' was B.Y.O. however there was nothing to suggest we should bring our own snacks. You can imagine our surprise when, upon being shown our room, we were also shown the kitchenette where we could store the snacks we brought with us. If taking your own snacks to a 'luxury lodge' does not surprise you then you will love the spectacular views and very friendly hosts.

Response from Robert I, Owner at Mount French Lodge
Responded 14 Jan 2016
In thousands of small hospitality businesses across Australia and the world, and I'd guess larger ones too, staff and proprietors multi task or perform different roles on the same day. Cleaners might become kitchen hands, front of house staff become wait staff, kitchen staff are required to maintain their own bathrooms and yes, clean the toilet. Your mother did it when you were growing up! Every micro or small hospitality establishment works on this principle as it is not possible or practical for them to hire staff to perform every separate function - especially when the business is remote. To think otherwise is naive to the point of absurd. Marina and I (and I believe every other small hospitality operator) are actually quite upset by Bec's implication in her review that in performing all the tasks involved to run The Bunyip that it is somehow "icky" or "dirty" that, and I quote " it's a bit disconcerting that the same two people cook the meals, clean the toilets, mow the lawn and do the massage. It is also impossible to meet the standards set by the many other very impressive lodges in Australia". The implication that there is a lack of hygiene standards is offensive Marina is quite upset about linking in the massage. She has worked hard to achieve her qualifications in this field, holds the appropriate insurance, first aid and professional memberships. Hygiene is a significant element of her practise for her and her clients health and Bec's comments imply otherwise. With regard the rest of the review we have made three course dinners for guests arriving from overseas after 10pm and provided countless snacks for others to satisfy the afternoon munchies so if you stay with us at The Bunyip and need something to eat just ask and we would be glad to help. The Bunyip doesn't "masquerade" as anything. We provide quality, comfortable, unique accommodation in a truly beautiful setting. At $300 per night The Bunyip's tariff doesn't remotely compare to the great Australian Lodges like SOL or Spicers. We don't claim anywhere including on our website to be in this league or use that phrase. We offer personal un-fussed service - again if you need anything from information to a needle and thread just ask. I'll leave others to comment on the food served. Couples stay in their own private mezzanine apartment/studio (100 metres from our accommodation) with all the mod cons and truly amazing views of the Great Dividing Range and the Fassifern Valley floor 800ft below. The comparison to a B&B is quite wrong. I guess the best reference is to read the other reviews and make up your own mind. The Bunyip has been the winner of the TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice for the last three years running. We love it and hope you will too. Rob - The Bunyip

The Bunyip is unconventional in setting and presentation but the overall effect is superb.

The actual accommodation is like a an exceptional motel type facility. It is well presented, spacious, extremely comfortable in fitting and self sufficient for leisure. Whilst there are facilities for light refreshment in the accommodation unit the design emphasis is clearly on guests dining in "the Great Room". This part of the complex provides wonderful facilities offering views, comfort, leisure for reading or conversation and dining.

Dining is a highlight of the visit for breakfast and dinner. Whilst guests are invited to mention dining restrictions, in reality menu selection is determined by Rob and Marina. While we found this a bit unusual it worked superbly. The food is beautifully presented and obviously prepared with pleasure, skill and experience. It reflects availability of good products but also an experience of dishes that have ready acceptance amongst the guests over time.

We left the short visit with a strong attachment to our hosts and their fine establishment. We wish them great success and hope to visit them again to be spoiled once more.

Thanks Croosin very glad you enjoyed your stay. The rooms at The Bunyip are not self contained which is like a hotel or motel. But for those of you yet to stay at The Bunyip, in every other respect, our apartment style accommodation is not like any motel . It is much more than a motel room, hotel room or B&B. Each apartment has separate living and sleeping areas, a kingsize bed on a mezzanine level which is dressed with quality Sheridan linen and a latex mattress and seven pillows of various firmness and shape. The bed looks out through the glass balustrade to the magnificent views. Each apartment has 70m2 of living area and two fullsize leather lounges, large flatscreen, iPod Dock, Nespresso Coffee and stunning floor to ceiling glass windows and doors which reveals the Great Dividing Range in all it's glory. The structure is in itself totally different with its steel, glass and concrete elements creating a modernist environment softened and made warm by the quality furniture and polished Bluegum timber floors and 6m high ceilings. The apartments are indeed unconventional yet blend into the green high on the mountain. They are private and very comfortable luxury dwellings. Hope to see you again soon. R&M

From the greeting and hospitality of our amazing hosts Marina and Rob to the panoramic views and tranquilty of this beautiful location, this was a wonderful weekend. Add to this simply magnificent food cooked from local produce (and Rob's garden) and luxury accommodation all of the elements for a exceptional experience come together. We were given free range of this beautiful property and spent time exploring, playing tennis, swimming and just kicking back admiring mother nature from the great room. The Bunyip is just the tonic to escape the rigours of everyday life and to recharge the batteries. It is a spiritual experience to only hear the sounds of nature and to watch the ever-changing vista across the valley. The weekend has had a profound affect of us both to the extent where we are considering a sea change. In the interim, another visit to this wonderful location will happily suffice. To quote Molly Meldrum, " Do yourself a favour!"
