Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Good hotel for such a remote location. The cabin style rooms are cute, quiet and clean if a bit basic. Air con plus ceiling fan keeps them cool.

Very friendly staff. Bar and restaurant for dinner with "pub" food, big portions and reasonable prices considering the remoteness, drinks are cheap. An included continental breakfast is provided in the room.

There is wifi but it often disconnects, but you can also pickup a 4G signal.

It doesn't look much from the front of the property but the pool and garden area are lovely. Short walk to the ferry to Thursday Island, and a local supermarket is around the corner. Easy airport transfers to.

We came to Horn Island with the Torres Strait Heritage for a WWII tour. We stopped at the Wongai Hotel for lunch. I had the "Wongai Burger. I was really impressed for such a remote location, the staff were great and the ocean view amazing would recommend stopping at this hotel on Horn Island

Very simple but classy hotel with all the TAB and Keno connections (I do play Keno). Pool table, which tends to be the center of attention most nights, with a local comp organised by 'Link'; one of the staff, who interacts with the Islander locals really well.

The cabins in the accommodation area are quite modern and spacy, and are maintained well. The pool is a standard 15m with a side wading pool. The grounds are kept very clean.

The staff are great and friendly. The mix of accents was a point of conversation every time I went to the bar.

The meals are unbelievably good... I had the best seafood marinara ever there and the other meals were equally as delicious.

Went to the Torres Strait to visit a mate, which went wrong when my mate got serious ill on the day I was transferring to his Island - he had to fly to Cairns for surgery. Needless to say I was at a loss with what to do for three extra days in the remoteness of the far north.

Link got me onto Derik (separate review) and I had two great extra trips that I hadn't planned on.

Things are a bit more expensive overall, but you have to expect that when you are on a relatively remote island and everything has to be shipped in.

Would I go back again ... yes!

I have stayed at this property multiple times over the past few years when working within the Torres Strait. The staff are excellent and always accommodating. The accommodation itself is comfortable and always very clean. There is always a continental breakfast in the fridge, the pool is lovely and the bar is a huge plus. The Wongai also serve awesome food for lunch and dinner out of their onsite restaurant. I would absolutely recommend the Wongai for anyone visiting the Torres Strait or transiting through Horn Island. The Wongai is the gateway to the Torres Strait!

As a busy traveller, the staff at Wongai hotel were amazing. Picked up from the airport immediately after phoning, friendly driver, check in details were printed and ready. The room was clean and comfortable. The menu covered anything you could want. I ordered the steak which was a lovely cut of meat but more importantly was cooked perfectly. Bar staff were friendly and experienced. Check out was a breeze. Overall experience was 5/5! Would definitely stay again.

Having traveled up to the Torres Strait from Cairns on our live aboard boat, last night we decided to treat ourselves to dinner ashore.

And knowing that the Wongai Beach Hotel had very recently changed hands we were also keen to check it out. We were glad we did so.

In the restaurant waitress/greeter Tamara was very welcoming and helpful. There were quite a few diners in, also a large group. Tamara advised us that the large group had not received their meals we would probably have to wait approx 20 minutes. So we took our drinks outside and were happy to wait.

We had ordered steak and chips and were not disappointed. Our medium/rare steaks were cooked to perfection, the chips were crispy and the small but tasty salad was excellent.

Wine is not available by the glass but can be purchased by the bottle. Or, for $10 there is a good selection of small 185ml bottles of red or white wine. We each had a small bottle of Shiraz, which gave us a good sized glass. With the option of sharing another small bottle should we want a ‘top-up’.

Summary:- a very pleasant evening with friendly staff and an excellent chef. Well done everyone!

Fantastic hotel.

Lovely cabins, we were fortunate to have cabins overlooking the water. So just perfect.

Cabins were spotless plus a light breakfast was a bonus for us all.

The food was very good and enormous helpings.

Nice to have a pool to use as well.

The hotel is only a short walk from Horn Island ferry wharf, so very convenient

Very friendly and helpful staff. Easy to arrange a transfer from the airport. Our room was clean and comfortable. The hotel is a little dated and could go with some TLC but I imagine covid put anything like that on hold. Nevertheless, we had everything we needed for a short stay. Breakfast is provided by way of bread, butter, cereals, fruit, condiments etc. tea and coffee making facilities are available in the rooms. Again, it certainly met our needs. The food is “pub food” and the serves are enormous. There is a good variety on offer. The bar staff( particularly Shauna and Leo) are so good👍👍. The pool is nice and is cleaned daily. Unfortunately the sail cloth cover shown in the hotel photo is missing which meant the pool water was warm and no protection from the sun. Very happy overall.

My partner and I had dinner tonight at the Wongai Hotel restaurant and we ate
the best roast lamb meal! I've been cooking family roasts all my life and so it was a real pleasure to eat an amazing home cooked lamb roast, everything was perfect down to the tasty gravy. Thank you so much, our compliments to the chef! Get in quick as this chef is leaving in 3 weeks!!!

Friendly and very helpful staff. Clean unit with traditional Wongai ready in fridge. Was picked up from airport with staffs-members private car as phone lines were down. Nice food in restaurant. Pool looking very inviting but it was raining and I needed to go to bed after a long travel day.
