Travellers' Choice
The Blaue Gans, whose tradition dates back 660 years, is the oldest inn in the city of salzburg. It boasts a prime location opposite the festival hall and in the heart of the historic centre, which has been declared a world cultural heritage site, and is only a short walk from mozart's birthplace. We have carefully combined the historic walls of this inn, which is steeped in tradition, with a modern design and contemporary art. The result is a place that exudes a natural feel, a venue for people who like to pursue their own way. we are pleased to accompany you along a part of this way.artHOTEL: more than just a Designhotel, synonymous with the personal freedom for an individual lifestyle.

Wonderful staff and atmosphere! We were deciding between two hotels for our stay and I’m so glad we chose this one. We had a perfect room for a recent girls weekend in Salzburg. Everyone was incredibly kind and helpful. Highly recommended!

In the time of Corona, this hotel has risen to the challenge of “making lemonade out of lemons”. Establishing creative but practical ways to not only keep this a safe and comfortable place to stay, but also to keep the ENERGY of this artehotel going—the hotelier and his crew have accomplished this. We loved the art on the walls, the greenery of the garden street-terrace in front of the hotel, and the furnishings of our room. While other posts have mentioned the noise of the street, we enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the central location and historical surroundings at the end of the famous Getreidegasse, across the way from the Pferdeschwemme fountain and the Festspielhaus.( Besides, the sound-proof windows kept out any noise if we chose to keep them closed.) We got 3 great nights of sleep with the windows open! The hotel is a wonderful mix of tradition, “altbau” and modern. Marvelous stone steps in one corridor, modern glass steps in another…old antiques & nouveau art pieces of furniture. The art on display invites the onlooker to interact with it. On the weekend that we were there, a local craftmaker was selling attractive recycled bags in the one hotel entrance. We did not eat at the restaurant, but we did enjoy a night-cap at the terrace bar late one rainy evening. The huge umbrellas kept us dry, the lights from the fountain were a dramatic backdrop. We did make use of the foldable city bikes provided by the hotel. Our ride out to the Hellbrunner Wasserspiele (Prank Water Gardens) was a pleasant one, especially since there several points along the way where street bands played that weekend. Many thanks to the attentive hotel staff for making this a comfortable and pleasant stay.

We celebrated my husband’s birthday whilst staying in Blaue Gans and we were very impressed! Firstly they upgraded us to a larger room with breakfast, and then they left some birthday chocolates and personalised postcard on the bed. The staff were always very friendly and very helpful - happy to answer any questions / book restaurants / order taxis etc. The room was very clean and tidy and the location in the old town was great! Loved the personalised touches - a mini branded rubber duck you can take as a souvenir, and branded umbrellas that you can borrow (and even buy one to take home if you like them). We would definitely stay here again next time we come to Salzburg. Thank you Blaue Gans for a lovely stay!

The Blaue Gans proved to be an exceptional hotel and provided an excellent base for our week in Salzburg. The joy began as the taxi pulled up directly at the front door, as taxis are allowed access to the pedestrianised Getreidegasse. Check-in was a breeze and our room (410) excellent. Despite being located in such an old building, the rooms and public areas are both modern and functional. The hotel is peppered with original artworks, which will delight or dismay, depending on your particular tastes. I will say this – for my tastes, the hotel’s art collection exceeded that on display at the city’s Museum der Moderne. As for the room itself, the bed was extremely comfortable, delivering seven nights of uninterrupted sleep. Getreidegasse wasn’t a particularly noisy street but even if it were, the windows provided excellent sound insulation. There were all the attributes of a modern hotel, from minibar, (not used), safe, excellent flat-screen TV and excellent wifi. The bathroom had some excellent complimentary toiletry items and made good use of the somewhat limited space, with some custom-made bathroom furniture. Breakfast was delivered in the restaurant and was up there with the best. The buffet delivered a delicious array of breads, cheeses, cold meats and some rather exotic items. The freshly squeezed juices were a treat and the morning coffee and tea were both excellent – not always the case in hotels. If you so wished, hot breakfast items were available to order, delivered by the friendly and efficient staff. In fact every member of staff in the hotel were friendly - as well as consummate professionals. After breakfast, the restaurant is set for lunch/dinner and the buffet area into the hotel’s more relaxed brasserie. The food in these two rooms is truly spectacular and shows off the talents of a chef at the very top of his game So that’s it then, ten out of ten? Well there were a couple of things which - while not serious - could have been better. The shower screen consisted of two panels and there was a gap between the two. Inevitably, you ended up with a pool of water on the bathroom floor. The shower itself had good flow but the shower head position was not ideal, due to the low ceiling and the awkward position of the extractor fan. The wifi signal was good and strong and required no password for access – excellent. However, it did require repeated acceptance of the hotel’s terms and conditions. Again – a kind of “first-world” non-problem and better than having to type in multiple character passwords. What could be a problem however, was the insertion of your room key-card to turn on the lights etc. As soon as you removed it – all lights went out immediately. There was no delay to enable you to get out of the room. On returning at night, my wife had to hold the room door open, to allow light from the corridor to illuminate the card slot. Again, this wasn’t a big deal but what follows could be. In summer, removal of the room key could turn off the air-con. There was a slick looking air-conditioning unit in the room, (which obviously went unused in January). If the removal of the room key turned off the air-con while you were out - in summer, you could return to a very hot room. Perhaps this is to prevent guests from leaving the air-con on, with a window open? It would be preferable to have proximity switches on the window that would cut-out the air-con when a window was opened. I have experienced this feature in quite a few hotels, especially those in Southern Europe. Then again, the air-con could stay on - as I said, we had no need to use it. Please do not let these pretty insignificant things put you off in any way. The Blaue Gans is a thoroughly excellent hotel and when we return to Salzburg, (when the weather is a little warmer), we will definitely use the Blaue Gans as our base – absolutely no doubt.
