The outside looked like an abandoned building, but inside was a chic lounge that any 5 star hotel would die to have. This place was so nice, the locals make it a destination in Reykjavik. Not so nice, the rooms. I was in a 6 bed dorm when I had initially booked a 4. Little to no storage, tightly packed...

This place was definitely bumping the couple of nights I was there due to the Secret Solstice Festival being in town. The vibe was young and fun, and the hostel attracts an open-minded, go-with-the-flow kind of crowd. Most of the social life seems to be centered around the bar/restaurant area next to check-in, and even though I didn't get to...

Great little place. Courteous staff. Clean rooms. They have communal showers and separate facility showers/washrooms. They have a great breakfast and are very close to downtown Reykjavik. You have to give them a deposit to get a key to use the locker in your room to store your items.

My wife and I stayed 2 nights at KEX in one of the larger Co-ed rooms. The place was clean and there was plenty of room for all our stuff and it seemed secure. When we first arrived, we were able to store our bags with the front office in a secure area until check-in. The main level had a...

Very conveniently located to the shopping/touristy parts of town. We were easily able to find cheap street parking for our rental car in front of the hostel (and there is a parking garage 1 block away as well). Bathrooms were large and clean, common areas were charmingly quirky (think Anthropologie catalog) and plentiful. Beds were comfortable and each one in...

The Hostel was good. Friendly staff, clean enough, good food and I met a ton of people. The only downsides to this hostel is that you get little sleep. Since it has a popular bar, you will not sleep before 11:30pm. Also, if you get bedding from KEX the pillow is horrible. Other than that it's a great place to...

Decent enough hostel. We had to pay for the bedding which I thought was a joke. The kitchens do not have ovens. Noisy hostel because of the bar and restaurant downstairs but they offer free ear plugs. Nice interior around the hostel but showers aren't the best.

I was expecting it to be cool and designed well. I was expecting the food and beer to be great. It's becoming easier for down to earth, quality driven people to get their hands on enough money to make something like Kex but whomever made this hostel really really nailed it. When I think of my entire trip to Iceland...

Stayed at Kex for 4 nights when I was in Iceland, can't recommend highly enough. Staff are friendly and helpful, really nice bar downstairs with frequent live music and good food (try the Freedom Burgers!!). Stayed in a different dorm room each night, all were lovely, clean and comfortable :)

Really nice, open social areas, the bar food looked nice but we were on a budget and it was too much for us students. There's a supermarket about a 5 minute walk and it's a further 5 minutes to Hallgrímskirkja (which is worth going up). The bathroom was always clean and the rooms had character unlike most dorms. There are...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
It' s the Icelandic word for "biscuit" and a social hostel in Reykjavik. What's not to love? Housed in an old biscuit factory in the heart of Reykjavik, KEX is just steps from all the bars, clubs, and music venues that give this city its legendary reputation. It's also a painless distance from late night munchies and a mind-boggling array of coffee houses, shops, and tourist attractions. Of course, you might not even want to venture outside of the hostel with all its features: a cafe and bar, lounge area, heated outdoor patio, tourist information desk, laundry room, and free Wi-Fi. Two guest kitchenettes and private laundry facilities are also available. And with a variety of rooms for up to 214 guests, you'll have no problem meeting interesting, new travel buddies from exotic places. KEX oozes with personality and soul-just like our guests. Every piece of decor has a story to tell. Using salvaged materials and found objects from various sources, KEX is an organic concept blending Iceland' s past with a modern, international twist. The raw industrial spaces and vintage furnishings combine to give it a homey, eclectic feel. With the affordable nightly rates, you'll still have enough cash left over to enjoy a few pints of Viking beer or sample some local delicacies like hakarl and Brennivin. In addition to our dormitory rooms we offer three different double rooms: 1. Double Plus - 1 double bed, 1 private bathroom, linens and towels, and 1 fantastic seaside view. 2. Double Standard - 1 double bed (of the most clever convertible design in case you get tired of being so close to your travel partner), shared bathrooms, linens and towels, and if you are lucky the same fantastic view. 3. Twin - 2 single beds, linens and towels, and a better than average chance of making your friends back home quite jealous indeed. LOCATION: KEX is located in the center of Reykjavik, with a view across the sea to Mt. Esja across the bay. The old factory that houses KEX is also home to The Living Art Museum and studios of various artists, dancers, and fashion designers. KEX is within an easy walking distance to the city's interesting nightlife, restaurants, shopping streets, cultural attractions, and other points of interest in the city center. To reach those places a little further afield, the hostel is well connected to the city's public bus system. ... more   less
