This was one of the best vacations I have ever had. The accommodations are awesome.
Its like being at the beach and the mountains at the same time. Its probably the simplest type of vacation I have ever taken as well. The cabins were clean...More

The actual hotel is in Water Island, not in the actual St. Thomas island. The hotel was awesome, you get to make all of your meals on premises, they provide all the kitchen essentials for your cooking. The view from the shared dining room is...More

You didn't do your homework about Water Island and Virgin Islands Campground and for that we get a less than a 5 star rating. There is no way I can fix that problem.
Sincerely,
Deborah
I'm a little loath to let out the secret, but Water Island is paradise and the Campground is a wonderful place to stay. We enjoyed meeting friendly people from far flung parts of the mainland and found the year-round natives to be welcoming and deeply...More

We visited the Virgin Island Campground on during the February vacation week with my family. The facilities are outstanding. The people friendly. And the beach beautiful! We arrived on a Saturday earlier than expected because of a storm. We had no problem getting the ferry from...More

Your review made me immediately come to respond.... I only wish I could "paint the picture" that I also see. The description of your experience arriving at the campground is exactly the experience we want people to have...thank you for bringing that to life.

I believe this would be a good choice for you.
We have camped all over southern Africa and youth hosteled in Europe so we are also comfortable with some roughing it. This hardly qualifies as roughing it unless you are really a Hilton recluse type (go to the resort hotel and not leave).
We are in our 60s but never rented a golf cart on this island. Walking is easy. The ability to cook our own food to save is a big plus and this is well set up. There are two places very very close to the ferry to Water Island. One is upscale and very expensive but only 50 yards from the ferry. (This is Gourmet Gallery, Trip Advisor did not like grocery stores but it is reviewed on Yelp.) The other is perhaps 1/3 mile away, a Pueblo. Not as nice an experience but it had most things. You might go to Pueblo and then finish at Gourmet Gallery. Check how far the walk is. All groceries are expensive in St. Thomas.
Back to Water Island: I am sure other reviews tell you what a superb place it is. Honeymoon Beach has some snorkeling and resident turtles who are used to people and tend to move away, not liking much attention. There are other locations you can walk to without too much trouble to swim or snorkel and locals are extraordinarily helpful. Have a super trip.
