Travellers' Choice
In a narrow alley in the heart of the Old Harbour of Chania, you will find the Fatma Hanoum Hotel, an old mansion that harmoniously combines the Venetian and Ottoman architecture. It has been renovated with care and attention to detail and has been lovingly restored to its former glory. The architectural mix of wood and stone of the old building, the twinkling lights, the warm colors and the modern furnishings create an effect of romantic elegance, warmth and an intimate atmosphere that both relaxes and refreshes.

We enjoyed 3 nights at this hotel, had the room with the small balcony overlooking Skoufon Street which we used for drinks and taking in the Greek atmosphere- it was not too noisy. We liked everything about this hotel, location was excellent right in middle of old town, room very clean, breakfast as we were during Covid was served to us rather than buffet, but very good. I give my review 4 stars because of check in system. We arrived on a late flight not able to check in until 10.30, I emailed a few days before to advise of this and clarify arrangements but got no response- we arrived at hotel but door locked, and no message / sign on door- we phoned and were told to go to a reception place a few meters away, which we couldn’t initially find, it was ok finally but did cause us stress after a long journey that could have been avoided if the hotel had responded to my emails, I sent two in good time as anticipated there maybe a problem. We would stay here again and would recommend, just a shame about check in experience and lack of information.

My husband and I so enjoyed our one night stay here. The manager Marianna was very helpful, recommending great restaurants, locating them and the good shops on a map. Our room was spotlessly clean and comfortable. This pretty hotel is in a great location near to all that you would need: restaurants, the harbour and shops. The breakfast was more than adequate and nicely displayed. All in all, a lovely small hotel and one we would definitely return to.

The check-in hours that we were provided when we made the reservation were not correct. The day before check-in while we were traveling through Greece, we were sent an email to tell us that check-in is as follows: "Please bear in mind that the reception is not open all day. The reception opening hours are from 08.00-15.00pm & from 18.00-22.00pm" So, of course, we arrived during the period during the mid-day that it was closed and had to wait on the street with our bags because we didn't have a chance to check email until we actually arrived on site. Once we were able to speak to an attendant, she was rude to my wife as she explained that the credit card charge didn't go through over two months prior to check-in date and she was just now letting us know. So she wanted us to pay her for 5 days in cash. This sounded very weird. When we called the credit card company they told us that the charge did go through and that it was collected by the hotel. We provided this information to the hotel attended and yet she wanted us to pay her in cash for the stay. So we decided to cancel our stay immediately and told our credit card company that we wanted to dispute the charge since the hotel was telling us that it wasn't paid. We stayed another hotel down the street and continued our wonderful vacation. I am not sure if this attendant is still working there but be careful if you are asked to pay cash once you get there. We stayed for a week and would highly recommend the hotel. Marianna, the Manager couldn’t have been more helpful. She made us feel extremely welcome and contributed to the enjoyment of our holiday. Breakfast was varied and delicious. The location is good, obviously being so central means initially tricky to find but you’re a block from the harbour and in the heart of the town. We spent quite a bit of time on the roof garden reading in the shade, when it was very hot. Our room had good A/C was always spotless and felt clean and fresh. Without a car you might not want to stay in Chania for longer than a week, but for a week or a short stay FHB is a perfect sanctuary.

Fatma had it all -- great central location, particularly helpful staff, comfortable room with a modern bathroom, a terrace outside the room and a superb breakfast. We'd been in Greece for a month and Fatma was the best hotel we found on the island of Crete and tied with one other for the best hotel in Greece.
