We were looking for hostels in this area, first wanted to stay in other places, but in one place a strange man told us to wait and wait and wait, so in the end we just walked out and the other one had a really weird policy. Even tough we were there they wanted us to make a booking to...

I was taken to this hostel by an Egyptian hustler. Later when I came out of the shower. 100 euros were missing from my money. The receptionist gives away the rooms for the amount of 5 euros to couple who want to have sex for 1 hour. maybe that's why there are cameras everywhere There was blood stain on one...

The hostel itself was clean and the staff were friendly. The rooms have a TV and the room was cleaned daily. We stayed there for a week and booked it sight-unseen. In retrospect, we probably would have preferred to have stayed there only a couple of nights and stayed somewhere that was located in nicer neighbourhood. This neighbourhood never felt...

I stayed in Athens Easy Access Hostel with two of my friends (all girls in our 20s). It was our first time travelling together and found the staff very helpful. The rooms were clean and tidy and we enjoyed the free breakfasts every morning. I think it has changed a lot since Janurary, we did pass some shady characters hanging...

As two girls in their mid-twenties travelling, we appreciated the helpful staff but were terrified of the location. (drug use, prostitution etc. right outside the building). During the day was fine, but we were warned to never leave after dark. One friend we met there (a boy in his 20's) said he got escorted back to the hostel at night...

Situated in a terrible area, behind Omonia square, full of strange people. We didn't go out in the evening. The hostel isn't bad, the rooms are quite clean, even if the furnitures are old and there was humidity in the room. In the night there was a lot of noise coming from the other rooms and the corridor, slamming doors,...

The hostel itself isn't too bad but it's location makes a very good reason to avoid it!! Down a dodgy little street behind Omonia Square with junkies everywhere! If you want a cheap room for the night it does the job -the rooms are clean and the breakfast is simple, just be very weary walking to and from the hostel...

Absolute shocker. Situated in a really dodgy area of Athens - read brothels opposite, prostitutes/transexuals on the corner, junkies passed out in the doorway of the shop next door, needles on the ground. One morning we walked out to find blood everywhere on the corner... Stayed in an ensuite room on the first floor and could hear Arabic music playing...

This place is a rough and ready backpacker's hostel - very clean with pleasant rooms but otherwise rather shabby - forget all about any kind of view! Breakfast was free but basic - juice and toast with other options available to buy. Staff were helpful but one was a bit too eager to promote one particular restaurant which was OK...

Staying in Omonia

Neighbourhood Profile
Omonia
Omonia Square is as plain in appearance as Syntagma is grand. Surrounded largely by functional blocks from the 1950s and 60s and no longer boasting its underground stalls, the square is now mostly frequented by immigrants and bargain shoppers. The most rewarding area to explore is to the south. Set off down Athinas Street, with the Acropolis gradually coming into focus in the distance, and you will get a sense of old commercial Athens, especially at the picturesque meat, fish and vegetable markets some way beyond the City Hall. The blocks to the west of Athinas are home to many Chinese and South Asian traders, adding a multicultural atmosphere to what was until the late 1990s a very homogenous society.

“We were on the thrid floor. It was good to use the lift for when we first arrived and left with the bags but easier overall to walk up and down the stairs for going in and out daily.”
