Torel Avantgarde is a five-star boutique hotel in Porto that opened in September 2017, and already won 5 prestigious awards: a World Luxury Hotel Award in 2018, a Prix Villégiature | Awards and a Seven Star Award,a Luxury Travel Guide Awards 20/2021, and Boutique Hotel Award 2021 Like Avantgarde artists, we wanted to create something completely new. Our vision was to establish a place where art takes centre stage in every way. The result is Torel Avantgarde, a space to live art, to touch art, and to feel the heart and passion of the artist in the various spaces : in the 60 individually designed rooms, at the reception, in the Flower Room, at the Digby restaurant and at the Calla Wellness & Spa. Torel Avantgarde is located in the heart of Porto, in the area of Restauraçao – just beside the Instituto de Vinho Verde and close to important parts of the city: 200m from the Palácio de Cristal, 500m from the Clérigos Tower, 750m from the Rua das Flores, 800m from the Avenida Aliados - and in the heart of the art district of Porto, only 5 minutes from Rua Miguel Bombarda.

Torel Avantgarde emerges as a hotel with an eclectic charm, boasting artist-themed rooms that captivate guests. The service receives accolades for its attentiveness and the gourmet breakfast is a highlight, enhancing the hotel's allure. While opinions on value diverge due to room size concerns and additional charges, the amenities, including luxurious rooms and pools, are met with consistent praise.
The hotel's cleanliness is top-notch, and its location offers scenic views near local attractions, despite some accessibility challenges. However, some guests have called out issues with room noise and privacy.

Detailed Reviews
Hotel's Favourite
Torel Avantgarde offered an incredible stay with a spectacular view of Porto out of our Coco Chanel suite, with its creative design, impeccable staff, and the best concierge in town (thanks, Miguel!).
That said, I don't think it offered a good value for the price. The suite room is very small; you only get 1 bottled water per room ("because they don't have enough empty bottles for refill"); the bathroom and shower stall, although all nice and marble are really tiny to the point there is no place to put your toiletries near the sink. The shower stall needs to be properly sealed, otherwise it's seeping water all over the bathroom. Finally, for the boutique property of such caliber I expected a bit higher luxury skincare products.
I also hope that the hotel can replace a dirty old worn-out carpet in the hallway - it's the first thing one sees when getting out of the elevator. Some chairs at the restaurant are also peeling and unsightly and in dire need of replacement. At such high price point, and with great hardworking staff, these things were unexpected and likely unacceptable.

We recently spent several weeks exploring various parts of Portugal, and have visited other European countries, and this hotel was by far one of the best hotels that we have stayed at in Europe. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with only the best service. The room was on the larger side of hotel rooms and you could tell everything was cleaned and sanitized prior to our arrival. The staff made sure that our room was stocked with necessities at all times, and were very quick to answer any questions we had or give recommendations. The location was the biggest issue as the hotel was about a 10-15 minute walk from city center, but uber rides were to cheap, it didn't really matter. We will be staying at this hotel during our next visit to Porto and recommend to anyone looking for a hotel!

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
We stayed here recently for six nights during the pandemic and the staff was very attentive to wearing masks and ensuring safety. Initially we had booked Torel 1884, but our booking was moved here and it worked out incredibly well. Those views are breathtaking and it really makes you feel like you're on a real vacation even though you're in a city. The front desk was especially friendly in a naturally genuine way (they provided some excellent suggestions for wine tasting in Gaia and which tram to take), and the food at the restaurant is delicious. I dream of returning one day and waking up to that view of the Douro. The location is also noteworthy as you can walk to many sights in about 10-15 minutes. I also appreciated that it wasn't smack dab in the middle of the city. It was quiet and peaceful and everything we wanted our vacation to be. Muito obrigada!

We stayed here for 3 nights and can confirm this hotel is beautiful! It is ideally located in central Porto (5mins walk from all main attractions) yet offers a relaxing, chilled vibe. The highlight is the infinity pool overlooking the Duoro river with extremely comfy sunbathing chairs. The breakfast was lovely and the welcome drink/spa voucher was a nice touch. The rooms are stunning & beautifully decorated (I highly recommend a suite room, 22) and the interior downstairs is 'instagram' perfect with the flower walls. The only downfall is lack of free or any parking around the area (we had to pay 18euro a night to park at the hotel!!) and there is not enough sun loungers to accomdate the guests (7/8 loungers only) so at times we didn't have a place to enjoy the pool but it wasn't a major issue as someone always left within half an hour or so. It is very COVID conscious with masks mandatory inside and hygiene stations everywhere. Overall I highly recommend and look forward to staying here again!

This hotel looked so promising but sadly it didn’t live up to the hype. To balance this review Good points included, a nice breakfast and attentive staff in the catering side. Check in staff not good. We were staying with another couple and they seem to have charged us twice at every opportunity including the room charges, so do check your bills!!!! We opted for the executive rooms at €490 per night, the rooms (3rd from the standard) were small, dark and the bathroom set up is a series of cupboards one with a loo and one with a shower, affording you no privacy. There is one smallish sink set into an alcove, and then a bench with a small ledge above to keep all your toiletries. There is little sound proofing so you can hear the TV’s in the adjoining rooms. The key to get into the room was like a car key that failed to work on more than one occasion resulting in us having to get reception to let us in with the master.
To summarise, the hotel is in a very good location, and has all the look and feel of a boutique hotel but be prepared to be frustrated when it simply doesn’t live up to the expectation.

+1
I stayed at the Torel Avantgarde for 2 nights with high expectations from seeing all the beautiful pictures. Aesthetically, the communal areas such as reception, bar and restaurant are all very tastefully decorated and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
Check in was supposed to be at 3.00 but room wasn’t ready so we were offered a complimentary drink with a view until it was ready. They also asked if they should charge our stay to our credit card when it was already paid…should really check these things properly first.
Day 1 we were given room 25 which was nice. Bed was comfortable, room was spacious and decorated well. But my river view was interrupted by a building site directly next door which begins work around 7.45/8.00 am in the morning! No warning given by the hotel and they hadn’t even warned us.
Then we noticed some other impractical issues. The bathroom is open into the bedroom but has two glass cubicles opposite each other, one for shower and one for toilet which is separated by a the sink space. But for some reason the towel rail and hooks are inside the toilet??? You have to get out of the shower and go into the toilet cubicle to reach for your towel!
Due to the building work and the crane making its very early noise, we asked for our room to be switched as they weren’t very busy. We were then given a very small room away from the building site (not sure if we were being punished for complaining about the building site noise).
Here, I found the bed comfortable, but with very thin sheets, you could see and feel the bumpy design on the mattress. The pillows to sleep on had hardly any filling so had to use the hotels decorative pillows with the logos.
Then you discover the tiniest of bathrooms. There was the toilet in the glass cubicle (door didn’t even fully close, 2inch gap!) and then a very small shower attached to the glass wall in the toilet. You actually had to open a small door from the outside, the toilet door and the toilet and shower separator wall to get in!!! Who designed this??
Needless to say, this is definitely not a great hotel although had all the means to be one. We were offered a late checkout and on the last day when we confirmed they said that there was nothing there to say this was agree. Finally after some negotiating they did honour the 3.00pm check out.
Needless to say, I wouldn’t return to this hotel. I wouldn’t say it’s a 5star but has all the means and making of one if they tried.

This is an amazing place to stay. Chic modern with sylish artistic touchs. It makes homage to great writers, directors, artists etc by naming the rooms after them. We stayed in Stanley Kubrick room with amazing view of the majestic Douro river.
Service was top-notch. Pedro Figueiredo, Marcio Leon, Beatriz Gnsalves and Helderaven (sp? at breakfast) were all amazingly attentive and friendly. Next time we come to Porto and we will as its a charming city we will stay here without reservations.
Rooms are nicely appointed and public spaces, bar area and tables/breakfast area are artistically designed. Loved the look and feel of place.!
Highly highly recommend!
Location: the hotel is off beaten path but not far away from main downtown area as the city of Porto is walkable. Late at night prob would cab it as residential area and get darker and less activity but during day no problem.

We have just completed our 4 day stay in Porto and are delighted that we chose the Torel Avantgarde as our Porto home.
The hotel is a little way out of the hustle and bustle of central Porto but only a 15 minute walk away. So, near enough for access but set in a peaceful and quiet part of the city. The views from the hotel are spectacular, based high above the Duoro.
The hotel is arty and quirky and much loving care and attention has gone into both the design and fit out of the exterior and interior. The public areas are really cool, with the parts around the warm spa pool and the cooler infinity pool being pretty special.
The room we had was in the newly acquired building alongside the main hotel and was most comfortable and large. The artwork over the cupboard doors is clever and original and the artist’s easel in the room is a nice touch. The spacious bathroom has a partly open to the elements bath section (even on the 4th floor), a separate walk in shower and two basins, which are generous. Slight challenge is the taps which are, to put it mildly, different (I’ll say no more). The Tenro by Digby restaurant is excellent and I’ve reviewed our two dinners separately. The breakfasts are generous and combine typical Portuguese offerings including tarts and cakes with more regular fare, Continental and cooked. We especially enjoyed the breads.
The service was, as all over Portugal, friendly if a tad slow on occasions, but nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff, whose smart yet casual dress code we liked.
The prices are very fair for a 5* hotel.
As an aside, getting around Porto by Uber was a pleasure in all ways, including the pleasant drivers, good quality cars, general availability and very reasonable prices.
We’ve had a great time in Porto and thanks to all at the Torel Avantgarde for playing a big part in that.

Booked this last minute trip to Porto and loved the pictures of the hotel.
From the day we arrived the staff were so warm and friendly! Nuno and the reception staff, Diego and the restaurant staff thank you for being so lovely and welcoming!
We had breakfast included but due to Corona you had to book a slot and they couldn’t serve it buffet style. The good thing is you could order extra food during your slot. On a whole food was tasty and drinks nice too.
Only con for me was one morning we had a lady in her very small swimsuit in the dining area in the morning. Everyone else was dressed and there were also children around so it was a tad inappropriate. So for me I would recommend that perhaps the hotel ask that people are dressed when it comes to breakfast and/or dinner.
All in all, fantastic place to stay so I highly recommend! We will definitely stay here again on our next visit.
Very central a lot of places are within walking distance and if not Ubers are under €5 to most places.

We made a last-minute booking for the Torel Avantgarde, a choice which we did not regret!
The staff was incredibly kind, patient and helpful; all spoke great English.
We hadn't realized before booking how central the location was - we were able to walk and enjoy the sites.
We loved the overall style and ambiance of this boutique hotel. If you have the opportunity to check out at least a few rooms before deciding on one, do so. At first we were hesitant to take the Simone de Beauvoir room, but after comparing it to others, it was cozy and calming, despite (or thanks to?) the dark colors in the room.
We enjoyed our breakfasts - the dining room had a beautiful view of the river and city, and the food offered was more than sufficient to satisfy our bellies! Eggs and espresso drinks were made to order.
