This old fashioned hotel is nice and quiet as it is slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of the town. Our room has some what dated decor and fixtures but it dies offer a lovely balcony with great views of the harbour. Simple breakfast with some variety. The rolls are lovely and fresh. The serving lady is a delight. 20 to 25 minute down hill walk to the main part of the town. The walk back is fine until the last few hundred metres. At this point the slope increases a fair bit and I found I was starting to struggle. Luckily it’s only for a short distance! Would certainly recommend to those who are reasonably fit(ish).

Stayed here for four nights. We were intending to stay for 3 weeks and had paid in advance for our stay. Because we unexpectedly had to return to the UK the owner refunded most of the money we had paid. Micaela was extremely helpful and kind during our stay. We were impressed with the lovely rooms and pool area. There were beautiful trees and shrubs in the garden and each room had a terrace for sitting out. Great views of Funchal. The only drawback was the steep climb up the hill to reach the hotel. For people who are not active enough for this climb, there is a bus service nearby and of course, taxis.

The hotel consists of small buildings and the courtyard is very attractive, surrounded by plants and trees and has great views to the Funchal. Location is also nice, it’s like staying in a small village where you can also see local life. We had double room with a balcony and sea view and what a view that was! We could have spent hours on our balcony… The hotel is quite old of course and the rooms have not been modernised so if you want some luxury this might not be your place. What comes to the free toiletries, there is only a piece of soap. This was not big deal for us, but as we were travelling only with hand luggage, we had to buy some toiletries on the spot. Nevertheless my husband and I found this place very homelike and enjoyable, very charming in an old-fashioned way. We would gladly come back if we will return to Madeira some day. The personnel is always there for you and and they all are so kind, even though everyone does not speak English so well. The breakfast is served to the table and it varies a little from day to day. The bread was fresh, the boiled eggs were perfect and Madeiran bananas sweet. Sometimes there was delicacy yoghurt instead of eggs. This kind of breakfast is certainly adequate to start the day. The lady in the breakfast room is most adorable, and she was so delighted when she found out I speak a little Portuguese. Our best wishes to her!

Stayed here in October 18 for a week. Room was a good size, clean and basic. Balcony had a great view over Funchal and and the bay to cruise ships. Quiet location and we slept well. No heating or aircon but it wasn't required when we were there. Pool was very quiet, normally just us with another great view. Breakfast was plentiful and fresh. Varied day to day, buns, croissants, cheese, ham, yoghurt and fruit. Bar is cheap but only food is toasties. 10 minute walk down to old town or painted door areas but its a steep walk back.

The majority of reviews for this hotel are positive,so I wondered if my wife and I stayed Somewhere else but no it was here. Sorry but the only positive thing to say is what a wonderful view! The rooms are tired and shabby the hair dryer deserves a place in a museum but overall the cleanliness no other words but DIRTY! We have had many breakfasts at budget Portuguese hotels and enjoyed every one But this one not,why they don't do it buffet style I don't know, but to be faced with Longlife croissants many rolls a few slices of sweaty cheese a egg boiled a number of hours ago and 1 sachet of jam and butter and certainly not served with a smile. All in all very disappointing don't stay for lunch as the only offering is toasted. Massive potential for lunch and snacks bit like it all just tired.
