This was our first foreign holiday since the Covid-19 global pandemic struck. We chose Madeira because it was on the UK 'Green List' and we chose Eira Do Serrada because we had not visited this area on our previous trip, when we stayed in Funchal. This is a lovely hotel, situated at altitude (1095m which is actually higher than Mount Snowdon in Wales) with commanding views of Curral das Freiras, this I believe translates as "Valley of the Nuns" We arrived early, in our hire car and took the opportunity to have a coffee on the front terrace where there is a comprehensive gift shop and cafe. The Eira do Serrada has a spectacular "Miradouro" (viewpoint) which is well worth the walk - follow the block paving and signed disabled ramp access. Although it is signed 'disabled access' you will eventually encounter steps as you trek to the final Miradouro - its worth persevering if you can because the final view is quite simply breathtaking. Due to the popularity of the view, parking can sometimes be difficult. This is also the case when functions, such as weddings, take place at the hotel. We only struggled to park on one occasion and to give credit, the reception did offer to move our car when some wedding party guests departed. Hotel rooms have spectacular views (see photo) of the valley. This sight never failed to amaze throughout our stay. We stayed in September 2021 and some covid restrictions were still in force. The swimming pool was open, but the jacuzzi, sauna etc were closed. This was restricted by government and when this is relaxed the holiday 'feel good factor' will be enhanced. This is currently the case for all establishments on the island. Masks were worn in public areas apart from the swimming pool when swimming and the dining room when eating and drinking. Breakfast is quite good with a nice selection of local, continental and British options. If you cannot see what you want, asking staff often yields great results. All staff that we dealt with were polite and efficient. Some 'hot' options weren't always hot however and this detracted from an otherwise good meal. Our room was lovely. We didn't have a bath, but instead there was a large luxury double shower. We had a super king sized bed with an adjoining room that had two singles - I think this was a family room. A small balcony overlooked the valley with an awesome view. The hotel is big on 'green' credentials and encourages you to report dripping taps etc. There were plenty of spare bedcovers in the wardrobe area and pillows were plentiful. The hotel is disabled friendly with a lift to all levels, wide doors and corridors. The hotel is fully compliant with covid guidelines, enforcing mask wearing by guests and fully observing this by staff. Alcohol rub was available at all entrances. We would come here again. If you are using public transport the number 81 bus does come here - although only at selected times. If you walk down to the village its an hour on the, steep, footpath or two around the road and through the tunnel. Once there, there are a range of walks to suit varying abilities, all of which are very well signposted and maintained. If you want a base in the hills from which to explore then this is perfect. If however you want a beach holiday then this hotel is not for you. Beautiful scenery. Fresh, crisp, air. Breathtaking views. Recommended

This hotel is lovely. Very friendly and helpful staff (thank you to Rui for helping us find one of the last rental cars in Madeira!). The views are amazing, food good, cocktails nice (served on the terrace of the cafe until 7 pm). The rooms nicely designed with views, balconies and comfortable beds. Slept above the clouds one night. The pool area is also great. We walked into the valley and also swam in the river pools at Poco dos Chefes. Highly recommend.

Hotel & Spa Eira do Serrado is on a prime spot at the viewpoint offering spectacular views acorss the valley to both sides, Funchal and Currral das Freiras. The hotel has comprehensive facilities (pool open - sauna and whirlpool/Jaccuzi closed due to Covid) and spa treatments that need to be booked in advance. Large and comfortable rooms with a balcony and great valley view. Good restaurant serving buffet breakfast and dinner. Dinner (a la carte) is really of great quality and value and can be recommended. Super-friendly personnel - clear go!

The Eira do Serrado Hotel was the perfect overnight base for me from which to explore the Nuns Valley. Unfortunately, I was one of only two guests so, at check-in, I was told there wouldn’t be a buffet breakfast the following morning (understandable) and was asked to tell them what I would like instead. We then played a game where I would mention things I’d probably choose from a buffet and they’d tell me if I could have it. It kinda worked, but it caught me off-guard and I didn’t really ask for what I’d choose. Plus the proportions were all askew! Then I was told if I wanted the set menu for dinner I would have to make my choices for that too, although curiously not for the quite lengthy à la carte menu (the food was actually pretty good). Next the sauna, gym and pool - I had to book a slot for the gym (normal in Madeira at the moment), the sauna was closed (every place I’ve stayed seems to have a different sauna rule!) and as for the pool - it was all covered over, and I didn’t have the heart to ask for it be opened up for just me! My room was very clean and comfortable enough and I had a great view from the balcony. Could do with one or two more power points though. The gym was poor - a couple of cheap cardio machines and 5 very light (1-3kg) dumbbells. So many hotels do this - clearly it’s only done to tick a box. On the whole, the hotel felt lifeless - usually, the lights were off and they’d switch things on for me when I appeared - and it was deathly silent. I know it’s so difficult at the moment but I think they should make their minds up about being open as it felt like their hearts just weren’t in it. The restaurant was set up for a wedding reception (which made it a bit weird to eat in!) - let’s hope it brought them in a bit of money to keep them going :)
