QSJ was still beautifully decorated for Christmas when we arrived on 4th January. When the decorations were removed, the hotel still looked very attractive with antique furniture and fresh flowers throughout. Communication with the hotel prior to our arrival was prompt and helpful and the check-in was efficient and straightforward. The taxi transfer we booked through the hotel was not waiting for us as we expected but when we phoned the hotel, he quickly arrived. Our room was spacious and comfortable with a little balcony looking over the gardens and terrace area. Comfortable bed, TV, stocked Minibar, plenty of storage and sitting areas. Bathroom had shower over bath, nice linens, towels, robes and toiletries are provided in refillable containers. Pool towels were also provided and changed regularly. Turn-down service was too early for us so we put up a notice to decline it. Umbrellas are provided at the entrance for guest use. Lots of bookcases around for guests to exchange books. There is a daily courtesy bus at 10 am down to the marina area (on request). Reception staff are friendly and helpful. For the majority of our stay, the hotel was extremely quiet ( January and Covid requirements etc being the reason). This meant that the bar and restaurant were virtually empty at times, which was a pity as the quality and pricing of drinks and meals were extremely good. We took advantage of the daily “Happy Hour for 40% off drinks” at whatever time we chose to start our hour – brilliant! Great choice of cocktails, well presented and delicious. One evening we had a pianist playing which was great but otherwise it was very quiet and a bit flat and lacking in atmosphere. Most of the advertised events in the hotel bar did not take place, although there were notice boards around mentioning them and they also appeared on the QSJ app. The drinks waiters are very polite, professional and efficient but don’t easily engage in conversation to make up for the lack of other guests to chat with. We had dinner at the hotel twice, as well as a couple of lunches and an afternoon tea and of course daily breakfast. All meals were delicious, freshly prepared, interesting selection. No complaints from us. A little birthday cake and a bottle of Madeira Wine were left in the bedroom on the evening of my 60th birthday which was a nice gesture. We made use of the games room a few times: table tennis, pool table, chess and draughts. We also booked a hire car through Rosie on Customer Services, all very straight forward and worked out well. We joined the local yoga class in the hotel gardens one day and visited the spa a couple of times. The facial treatment was very good but the room was quite cold and the staff member was not chatty and no background music so it was not the most relaxing experience. When we visited for the complimentary Water Circuit, there was no-one around and the hammam and sauna had not been prepared and heated up, so it all felt a little awkward. There are two small pools. We mainly used the indoor one for swimming but sat around the outside one when sunbathing. We had them to ourselves on most occasions. The indoor pool lacked ambiance, not helped by two large potted floor plants that appeared to be dying. We walked into the centre most evenings to eat at restaurants and then sometimes returned by taxi (about 6 -10 Euro). It is about a 20 minute walk down to the port/marina area and a further 15 minutes on to the old town. Our favorite meals were at Restaurant Hemmingway and at Galeria Restaurant ( will review both separately). A very enjoyable stay.…
Me and my friend had a lovely afternoon using the spa where we had a gorgeous massage and then a delicious afternoon tea. A really lovely place to spend some time particularly if the weather isn’t great.
Our visit in December 2021 was truly 5 star a experience, the peace and quietness of the hotel and its lovely garden, the staff, the rooms, all contributed to a relaxing week, will return in the future. Enjoyed the comfy beds, the bathroom was a good size. We opted for a room with a small balcony as we like fresh air!
Last weekend we returned from 2 weeks at our favourite hotel in Madeira. We have visited many times and the standard of service is consistently exceptional even in these difficult times. Excellent customer service is the epicentre of this hotel and it excels in all areas. The accommodation and food is excellent but the staff go over and above to ensure your stay is remarkable and memorable making you want to return at the earliest opportunity.
We spent last week at this hotel, so relaxing, stylish, comfortable, excellent food in particular breakfast but best of all are the staff, genuinely friendly can’t do enough to help make your visit memorable, nothing is too difficult for them day or night. The room is large and overlooking a beautiful garden, so well kept. Beautiful products in the bathroom, soft towels and a dressing gown, comfortable bed. Everything so clean. Great spa facilities, two pools one indoor and one outdoor. Restaurant staff so friendly and a nice menu. Someone is very found of beautiful antique furniture and nice art works, beautifully laid out. Walking distance to Funchal if you like walking. Would definitely return.
