Travellers' Choice
Hotel do Carmo is 3 stars hotel right in Funchal's city center, with an ideal position to discover the city's main points of interest. There are supermarkets, pharmacies, banks and shops nearby. This hotel is a very good example of late nineteen sixties interior design, which confers it an identity and style of its own. It has 80 bedrooms all equipped with a 32'LCD television with cable TV, free wifi, direct telephone and a private bathroom. They are uniquely decorated with photo panels with icons of the sixties. All of its furniture and decorations are also clearly identified with this period. Most of them (49) have a balcony. Hotel do Carmo has a Restaurant were breakfast and other meals are served. The Bar on the reception floor has a nice terrace and a television where clients can watch Sports TV channels and play Billiards. On the last floor there's an outdoor swimming pool with a wonderful view over the bay and the surrounding mountains. Free Wifi is provided is all areas of the hotel

Really liked my stay at this Hotel. The staff was friendly and the breakfast was really nice. The room was clean and tidy. I also liked where the Hotel was situated. It was central for everything. The bars, restaurants and shopping also the cable cars where nearby. The Market was close by as well and entry to the sea wasn't far away. I also liked the swimming pool up on the roof with a good view over Funchal. When I return I would definitely stay there. Thanks for the Hospitality.

We stayed for a week and wished it could have been longer. I do not have a bad word to say about this hotel it was excellent from the get go! We were met with friendly helpful staff when booking in and the rest of the reception staff continued being so for the rest of the stay - nothing was too much trouble. We had a room on the fourth floor (416) that looked out over the front of the hotel and, even though the street was used by traffic (just one way), we were never troubled by noise. There was even a limited view of the harbour and the magnificent cruise ships when they visited (which was nearly every day). The room was spacious for our needs although it was a twin beds set up. It was very clean and the rooms were serviced every day. The cleaning and replacement of any linen or towels could not be faulted. To sum it up in one word - spotless! We found the mattresses to be firm but not rock hard but they suited us and there were two pillows to each bed, one of a medium firmness whilst the other was softer. That arrangement should suit most needs and there were additional blankets in the wardrobe. It is possible to hire a fridge for the room if you need to chill some bottles of wine or milk. There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the room but we had taken our own travel kettle and tea bags (typical Brits!) as we had done a little bit of research about the hotel's facilities before we left the UK. It is also possible to hire a safe that is located in the room with the rate being a very reasonable 2.50 euros a day and a returnable deposit of 5 euros. For those who like a swim there is an open air swimming pool on the roof but it was a little chilly in November for those of us who prefer warmer water conditions. We stayed on a half board basis and we found the food to be excellent. We were served three courses every night although the choice was limited. I highly recommend the soups they serve as well as the panacotta! We were assured that all the meals were made on the premises. Service was excellent with a special mention being made of the server/waiter/barman, Marcelo, who was on the ball and very pleasant. Breakfast is the usual choice of cereal, fruit, bread, hot breakfast, cheese, juices and hot drinks. One interesting additional item was the opportunity to have a glass of sparkling wine at breakfast. That was one 'breakfast' ingredient I had not come across before but, perhaps, I need to travel more (what a great excuse!)! The location of the hotel is very good being close to the market hall and the centre of town as well as the main promenade. The cable car station is not that far away either The bathroom facilities were very good with seemingly unlimited hot water and a 'monsoon' head on the shower which suited us but did make for longer than normal showers as it was so good! One small point is that there was no fan in the bathroom which might cause some issues in the hot and sultry summer months. One final plus point for the staff at the hotel, especially all the reception staff and management, was on the occasion of my birthday (third day there) we arrived back at our room to find a bottle of bubbly in an ice bucket with a card wishing me a happy birthday. Now were else would that happen?! Great and thoughtful service! All in all, I do not have a bad word about this hotel - great value for money, excellent service and friendly, helpful staff.

We stayed at Hotel Do Carmo in Funchal, Madeira from 13 - 20 November 2021. The hotel is rated at 3 stars and provides great value fur money. Don’t be put off by the immediate area around the hotel which is a little ‘scruffy’, the location more than makes up. Overall we had a wonderful stay. Tonia and the whole reception team are so friendly, welcoming and helpful, from advice re trips, posting cards and printing off our travel documents. All the staff in the hotel were the same - so welcoming. We booked a balcony room which was a good size and kept immaculately clean by the cleaning team. Breakfast was good with a wide selection, including 2 hot selections. We ate at the hotel in the evening on a couple of occasions, and the food was good. The set menu was great value at €16 for 3 courses. We have visited Funchal before, so know the city and the hotel location is excellent for exploring the city on foot. Covid precautions were excellent in the hotel as they are on the whole of the island of Madeira. We will definitely book Hotel Do Carmo again. My only criticism is the lovely rooftop pool is not heated and boy was it cold in November in spite of the 20+c temperatures…..🤣

Hotel has great location just few hundred meters from Santa Maria street. Friendly staff, very clean hotel, excellent daily service. Rooms has ceiling fan (no A/C). Some nights sleeping at the open window it was a bit noisy.

Nearing the end of our second week here and it's been great. Lovely hotel in a great location within walking distance of the old town centre and the marina. A longer but easily manageable stroll will take you to the new town area. Check in was smooth with the nice touch of a complimentary sparkling wine. Rooms are clean and comfortable with daily maid service. Breakfast is very good with a wide range of hot and cold food at the buffet, all of which is constantly replenished, including even more complimentary sparkling wine! Staff are lovely. Nice bar area too with very reasonable prices. Will definitely be keeping this on my list if we return to Funchal, which is highly probable by the way.
