Detailed Reviews
The hotel is a beautiful, historic family home that is wonderfully maintained with spectacular views of the vineyards and the countryside. We had a wonderful sunset picnic our first evening under an ancient acorn tree, and we had many top quality meals served in the quaint but elegant dining room or on the veranda with a breathtaking view of the surroundings. But that wasn’t what made our 10 day stay special. The first day we met Salva, one of the onwers, and two of his dogs, Pica and India. Salva is always present and making sure everything goes to perfection. Joana went riding with my 13 year old daughter every day, and both she, and one of the horses, Melhada, were highpoints. We made tiles nearby, a wonderful experience and a truly meaningful way to create your own souvenir. We took a taxi boat to Portinho de Arabida, and, when the taxi boat charged us 35 euros per person instead of 10, Salva somehow found out and took full responsibility. When we travel, we only stay in places we consider nicer than our own home. The villa we stayed in was beautifully and tastefully decorated. We loved our stay. Thank you so much.

We were due to stay here for just four nights but ending up staying for our whole two week trip as we we felt so safe and were enjoying the hotel and area so much. The staff right across the hotel were top class. So friendly and nothing was too much bother. They took such good care of us and booked local trips etc for us. The food was excellent and we felt comfortable as we ate outside and all staff wore masks and sanitised the tables and chairs between guests. The building itself is old but renovated to the highest standards. The grounds of the hotel are stunning, full of fresh lavender and vineyards and you can do horse riding, yoga and cycling. Eating beautiful food at night whilst watching the sunset over the mountains was incredible. Hotel arranged water taxi to local beach, wine tasting day out and dolphin trip for us, all perfect! If you need a break from everything, in a quiet and safe spot, just half hour from Lisbon Airport, then can't recommend enough that you stay here! Thank you Hotel Casa Palmela

Nestled among the vines and cork trees, the Hotel Casa Palmela offers peace, tranquillity and a well-stocked wine cellar. It's a place rich in history. Just 40 minutes from the heart of Lisbon and with easy access to a coastline encrusted with incredible beaches, the hotel is a perfect base to explore the wonders of Portugal.
Alternatively, you may opt just to sit by one of the two pristine pools or follow one of the many paths that trace the contours of the estate. If that feels too energetic, you could call on Hannah in the spa, join Pedro on a horseback ride through the cork forest, or seek our Mafalda for one of her signature cocktails.
This is a gem of a place, that feels more like a comfortable stay at a family estate among friends than just being in a hotel. It's the perfect for an escape alone, for a romantic getaway, or even a family break.
Get going.

It has all the ingredients for a wonderful place but the only thing 5 star are the prices. The staff is willing but totally chaotic with everybody referring to a manager that is mostly unavailable or on the phone. The house is beautiful, set in the middle of vineyards and close to Lisbon ( 45 minutes drive). The food is average at best and the wine tasting was three bottles of wine (white, rose and red for 4 people) with the most ridiculous explanations by a waiter who had no clue. The rooms are very uneven so make sure you ask about size, bathroom and view before booking. The prices are totally over the top.

In full disclosure, we were not guests at the hotel. We are local residents of Setubal who have frequented the hotel restaurant and have wandered through the lovely grounds of the estate.
There was a time when staying at a great hotel was the endgame. Service, setting and ambience were the important elements of the event. This hotel scores high on all of these. We would love to stay here for that experience but it is not necessary in our case. We pass this hotel frequently and one day decided to visit which has led to several more visits.
The grounds – which are extensive – include a large vineyard and a natural landscape with multiple trails. The hotel philosophy is one that is very inclusive as they want all guests to experience the magnificence of their property. You can come for coffee, take an hour hike and have breakfast or just leave. As a non-guest of the hotel, you never feel pressured to make more of your visit.
We have come for both breakfast and dinner. Our dinner there was absolutely divine and service was well beyond the standard. Unfortunately, breakfast was a bit of a disappointment and definitely could have been better, although we had a great morning hiking to a view of the Arrabida.
We give high marks to the staff and chef (for dinner) and highly recommend at visit.

This hotel has been very well developed from an original large homestead, stylishly presented, into a fabulous place to spend several days. Situated in beautiful local forests of the Arribida National Park and surround by local vineyards. The service was warm, friendly and impeccable. Our room was spacious, modern, very well located near the pool, and quiet. The restaurant food was excellent, and the breakfast ample, healthy and well made. We would love to go back in the summer and enjoy the pool and more activities in the region.

This is a charming hotel in a tastefully converted family-owned manor House situated amongst picturesque vineyards, with beautiful views back over the Arrábida Hills. Service was friendly and efficient and dinner on the terrace was good. My one quibble - probably viewed as eccentric by any but British guests - is their serving UHT milk at breakfast, plainly unaware that no British or Irish guest would consider this remotely acceptable for a decent cup of tea. Since British guests constitute a significant proportion of their clientele, and good fresh milk is available in all Portuguese supermarkets, (this is not Spain or France after all!) this is an annoying shortcoming for a 5 star hotel. (There were only 3 tables at breakfast and the other two also expressed disappointment at the nasty milk, but were characteristically 'too British' to complain!)

Location is wonderful, and so is the whole building and surroundings.
But comparing price/quality there is really something missing.
We spent 3 nights in weekend High season, but there was no management at all.We had to wait more than 3 hours before we could have our room, although we send a mail to ask for an earlier check in than 16.00.
Not possible, we have to waited till 16.15 . We have been in many 5 stars places all over the world, but never had this situation.
Thanks to Mr Joao de Sousa we we're calm down. He treated and helped us later with everything, and that made our stay good.
Our superior terras room was located perfect, clean and cool, but the decoration is for that price some dated.
The bathroom very small and not really comfortable.
In the adults pool only three umbrellas, to protect all the guests from the sun.
sunbeds we're not very clean, and the pool towels, is really not done,
in a 5 star Hotel member of the Leading hotels of the world.
The quality of the breakfast was 3 stars, only 2 sorts of unripe fruit,
and no fresh bread at all.
We have had diner several times, at the fantastic Terras outside, but please put mores covering to protect people for the extreme sunburning.
quality of the food was good, specially my fish was perfect prepared,
and again I say, the very kind service of Mr Joao, David, and several other members of the restaurant was really touching. They did their job more than fantastic.
So overall, the place has so many strong assets, location, building, history, surroundings, but some for us important details we're missing,
and the feeling that there was no management to talk with, but the location is Portugal on it's best!

We stayed here 3 nights to relax after some days in busy Lisbon. The property is beautiful, surrounded by 170 acres of land, some of those acres dedicated to wine growing. There are 2 pools, horseback riding, bicycles. The staff is very attentive but not fussy. The room was spotless and there is a lovely turndown service every evening. The bed was like sleeping on a cloud! Their restaurant servers delicious food, lunch and dinner. An impressive full breakfast is included in the price of the room. The only small hiccup we had was that the wifi connectivity from our room was unreliable but I think it had to do with the location of our room. In other parts of the property the wifi was fine. Nevertheless, for a hotel of this caliber, they should get this resolved.
I'm already looking forward to returning to the Casa Palmela. It might be one of the nicest, most charming hotels I've ever stayed.

+1
Visited recently for a friend’s wedding and had such a wonderful time, the property is beautiful and staff were lovely and friendly. We stayed in a junior suite and could not fault the room, it was decorated elegantly and had lovely amenities. We had lunch and dinner both a la Carte during our stay and really enjoyed the food, breakfast was also tasty and there was plenty to choose from. We also did the horse riding which was the perfect way to end our weekend riding through the vineyards. The horses were gentle (we are complete beginners) and our guide was knowledgable and great to chat to. If I had to think of a downside the only thing would be that the bar is not manned all the times that it says it is open, however, staff were more than happy to grab a drink for us if we wanted one. Thanks for a wonderful stay, we’re excited to come back!
