The location of this hotel is very good. Step outside and you’ve got shops, bars and restaurants on your doorstep. The pastries in Bernard’s is a must, and the prices are reasonable too.

Back to the hotel. The rooms are NOTHING AT ALL like the photographs on the internet. The rooms may have looked like this 20-30 years ago but now they are very dated and basic.

Cleaning staff are knocking on the door every day despite there being a do not disturb sign up. This woke us up on several occasions which is annoying. We ran out of toilet paper and towels needed changing.

It’s not a quiet hotel, through your room door you can hear people as if they are standing right next to you. The guests can be loud and non caring of fellow guests staying there.

The reception staff need some customer service lessons. They hang about talking to each other, they don’t greet guests or even look up unless you directly talk to them. Not all of them speak good English. You get the feeling they are low paid and not trained in customer service.

We had an early flight and arrived at the hotel at 10am. I fully understand check in is not until 2pm but was hoping to get a room by 12/1pm as whilst we were checking in, people were checking out. However the staff rigidly stuck to the rule and we wasn’t allowed to check in until 2pm, despite sitting in the hotel lobby right in front of reception from midday. I simply do not believe there are no rooms available. The lack of care and empathy for travellers is not good.

Air con in the room was good. No iron or ironing boards available, you have to pay for a ironing service. Location is second to none and if the price was reasonable I would come back knowing exactly what to expect.

Hotel Borges Chiado is excellently located, near a metro station, and in walking distance of the train station Rossio and several restaurants and places of interests. For example the San Justa elevators are a 5-10 minutes walk away. Our room was small and cozy, but inconvenient, because it was on the top and half of it was the diagonal of the roof top. My brother being 1.80 had to stay on one part of the room. Also the TV was badly placed, causing us to hit our head more than once. The staff is friendly, and they try to accommodate you as much as possible. I would recommend this place if you are planning to spend more of your day outside.

I will say that I was anxious after booking this hotel and reading the reviews on this, however, this hotel is fine with the potential to be excellent. The location is the selling point here so I think this is why they haven’t bothered to improve things, but with a bit of TLC it could be a better place to stay. The rooms are very average, and the walls desperately need a lick of paint and our tv was literally hanging off the wall when we arrived. The smell of sewerage throughout the hotel is putrid, but I found this in alot of places around Lisbon, not just at the hotel. There is a lounge/ gym area in the hotel that is wasted that could be used potentially as a bar or some type of area with a bit more life to it. Lastly, rooms are not sound proof, can hear everything outside and also from the room next door. Pack your earplugs or else request a room at the back of the hotel. Being honest, I don’t think I’d book this hotel again in a hurry, but it’s absolutely fine if you are just looking for somewhere to lay the head and get out and explore Lisbon.

Chiado is a great area of Lisbon but this hotel is a complete dump! They charged us top dollar for a deluxe superior room and we can’t open the windows because all of the machines and generators for this hotel are the view from our hotel room. When we went to switch rooms they told us we couldn’t and said our room was the front desk employee's favorite room. There are bugs flying in the room around the ceiling area all day and night. We’ve been to some amazing hotels in Lisbon but this one is just horrible! There is mildew, water damage in the waiting areas on the first floor, sitting areas and gym as well. The ceiling in the gym area has water damage with plaster hanging off the ceiling and bits and pieces all over the gym floor while I worked out. When the cleaning crew runs the washing machines above, water drains down the side walls. I went and showed the female manager and she seemed surprised even though this has been going on a long time. The entire first floor entrance into the sitting areas and gym smells like mildew. It is horrible. A giant cockroach was walking right towards me as I was on a zoom conference at midnight in one of the far back sitting rooms. I took pictures of the roach and showed it to the front desk and they seemed to not care at all. The customer service at the front was horrible to deal with as well and the food in the. morning breakfast was the worst we had for the entire month traveling all over Portugal in and out of many hotels. Chiado deserves better than this horrible dump of water damage, mildew, cockroaches etc....

Overall, the room was nice and clean and the shower worked very well. The wardrobe that housed the fridge was difficult to open due to bad assembly, the push open door didn't work correctly due to the top hinge being loose, thus making the door drop slightly causing it to get stuck. The hotel is kept clean, however there are a few problems that need addressing. There was a drainage problem in the sink, though it wasn't too bad. Some of the wood was rotting in the bathroom and there were a couple of exposed wires where the LED lights are connected, and there was a foul stench throughout the hotel, which probably ties in with the drainage issues in the sink. This smell permeated throughout the ground floor, gym, downstairs toilets and floors 1 & 2, we both heard some other guests remark at the awful smell.
Cleaning staff were very friendly, though some of the reception staff were very unhelpful when it came to trying to get a new safe, the receptionist whom we'd spoken to did not seem to care very much as we were greeted with a blank stare and no inclination to help either; we were not given a key and we were informed of this upon arrival, there was the option to keep our belongings in the downstairs safe but felt we were unable to trust them with valuable documents seeing as they didn't seem to care about helping in the first place. Someone who previously had the room had apparently taken the key; we were told that they couldn't replace the safe as it was bolted down (it wasn't bolted down and we could move the safe and even lift it, we did try telling the reception this) and we were told we couldn't get another room because the hotel was full, the receptionist then offered to call maintenance and would let us know within 30 minutes. After 30 minutes of waiting in the room, we had no call back from them and then went downstairs to ask, and was told flatly they could do nothing to help us and promptly turned back to their computer to end the conversation. Next day, we ask if maintenance had been, to which the reception staff said no. After day 3, we decided to stay with the room we were given and to just carry our documents with us, as there clearly was no intention to sort the problem out.
The hotel is let down by broken items fixed together with tape, a €3 charge for tea and coffee and the breakfast room's chaotic experience due to lack of staff; used cups and plates left at tables for long periods of time and even abandoned food left on plates in the buffet area, one of the days both of us were eating breakfast, we could only see a single member of staff looking particularly rushed and seemingly left to maintain a large breakfast room by herself. The tables are very close to each other, therefore not leaving enough room to pass once sat down, making it difficult to move without disturbing anyone else. The options for breakfast were okay on the other hand.
Personally, we wouldn't choose this hotel again after our experience, do not be fooled by the pictures on website as they do not reflect reality of the hotel.

This was our next stay at this hotel. Great location - city center, next to the metro station. It is worth asking for a quiet room, because, as in Lisbon, the party lasts until late at night.
We would especially like to thank the lady at the reception (Friday evening, July 31), who took care of the breakfast boxes for us, despite the fact that she was alone on the shift. Thank you for your help, kind word and smile. We hope the hotel management will notice this. We will be back soon.

I gave two stars just because of the location of the hotel. It is very central to all around like metro or train. We stayed a week in Portugal
Traveling and stayed mostly at 2 star hotels. This was the worst and only one that we had a bad service. Everyone that we stayed at all
Around Portugal had fridge and water some had drinks that include beers etc. all had very nice customer service.
At this hotel we had no soap and AC remote needed a battery. We called the front desk but phone did not work or no one answered. We asked at the front desk for them and stayed there 2 days still had no battery or sopa
Delivered. The second day we found a wrench in the bath sink.
They do not have a good customer service. Don’t even offer a coffee so cheap.

There is no sense how the rooms are made. I took twim room. Its was not same as hotels.com pictures. The sink was at the room not at the toilet. Toilet was really small. Also the tv is somewhere you can not watch it. Also in hotel.com its it sayin sounds proof. Yep no. Everything you will hear at the hallway. Step, voices. I woke up many times at the night. Also there is safe deposit at the room but no code or no key. You have to get that from the reception. Shower draine is were slow and you have to put shower of all the time.
Also no empty working power plugs.
Also tv remote doesn't work.

Also not safe place to stay with small children. Our room wardrobe door came off when child moved that. Luckily I was near and got a grip of the heavy door and no injury happened. Also on the fifth floor there are windows open all the time and no obstacles. A big drop to the ground and the windows are very low so child can be easily dropped if a tricks near them.

Room is okey size and clean but maybe some water maker and cups would be nice. There is only fridge but no glasses or anything. Also shampoo or body cream would be great.
Location is great. Metro just outside of the door. Also restaurants and shops.

Checked in and realized that the bathroom sink is not draining properly. The bathroom is so tiny and not adequate space for two persons. Asked to change to a room with better size bathroom, the manager did not seem to care as they asked us to pay upfront at the time check in.So his standard answer is no room available to change.
The attitude is very unfriendly, perhaps because we are Asians? Although we are actually American tourists, visiting Lisbon.
Breakfast is basic, bare minimum food at the counter. Fried bacons are like shoes leather. Cold meat is of low quality, cheapest available from supermarket.
Very disappointed. Will not book this hotel ever again.

Hotel is located in a very touristy party of town. While location is convenient and rooms are a decent size, it is EXTREMELY loud all night long. The main areas of the hotel also smelled like raw sewage the entire 4 days we were there.

I would not stay here again. There are other places within a couple blocks if you are looking in this area that would still be convenient but without the 24 hour foot traffic outside your window.
