A truly pleasant experience -- the owner has fixed up a 19th century house to modern standards, with a beautiful set of terraced yards out back, fresh oranges and lemons, and a lovely continental breakfast. We stayed in the bedroom with a kitchen, which proved very pleasant and convenient. It's really right under the castle walls; the view that people...

Casa Costa do Costelo is a large apartment on the top two floors of a multi-story residential building converted to a guest house or bed & breakfast, located just beneath Lisbon's famous Castelo. It offers excellent views of the city, the Tejo and the Castelo and is within walking distance to the Castelo, the Alfama and the Baixa. As most...

My wife and I spent three nights here on an extended weekend getaway from New York area. Every aspect of the Casa is well done-(1) the rooms with lots of wood and texture and views that you could not improve upon if you spent $500 a night elsewhere, (2) the breakfast with exotic local cheeses (and meats for those who...

With all the positive comments before, it seems not very meaningful to add on more here... I believe there are many friendly and yet budget hostel in Lisbon. But this is somewhere different and worth the extra if your wallet is not too tight. Joao is a very friendly owner of this small and cozy place. Very accommodating in every...

We stayed here 2 times 2 nights (in 2 different rooms). It is quite a climb to get there, but it is worth every step! The owner is very friendly, the view is super, the breakfast is great! It makes you feel very much at home in Lisbon!

We spent two weeks at Casa Costa Do Castelo at the start of 2010 and had a wonderful stay. The guesthouse is high on a hill beside the castle, yet still a short walk to the centre (Baixa). You do need to consider that it is a steep walk up to Casa Costa..., followed by four floors worth of stairs....

We loved our stay at Casa Costa do Castelo. The hills and steps were tiresome but worthwhile. The rooms had splendid views and were very personal. Joao was helpful (he even carried our heaviest bag up and down the stairs on his shoulder) and kind. The breakfast was the best hotel breakfast I have ever had and the breakfast room...

CCdC is located backing onto the castle wall, great view from the front rooms, all rooms are very quiet and are very well furnished and more than adequately sized. Hotel manager is very accomadating, around to answer questions and help with anything he can (makes a great fruit salad for breakfast). Breakfast is coffee, orange juice, fruit salad, lots of...

Like many others reviewers, we loved this guesthouse. We arrived Monday morning, 4 hours earlier than expected because of flight changes in our favor. We had no chance to forwarn Joao that we were arriving so early. We took a taxi for $14 (2 people, 2 bags), showed up at the door. Joao was great! Although surprised to see us,...

Have just come back from a 4 night stay. Agree with pretty much everything that's written here. First the pros: Friendly and helpful owner Good views (dependent on the bedroom you are in, but the view from the lounge and terrace are excellent) Fabulous breakfast - more than enough to set you up for the morning Rooms - very nice...

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
