I would highly recommend Hotel Solar do Castelo. Originally part of the castle kitchens, it has been so tastefully restored and converted into very comfortable accommodation. Our room and en suite bath/ shower room were quiet and warm. There are coffee, tea and pastries available all day in the lounge which also serves as a breakfast room. We were there...

We found this hotel to be an oasis of calm, just right for a nice relaxing trip. Our room and the public rooms were delightful and included good facilities. Service was good and unobtrusive. The location is most attractive and very convenient for exploring Lisbon. We would stay there again if the opportunity arose.

The hotel is tucked away in the walls of the castle. It is a spectacular place to stay and very friendly and helpful staff. You can easily get to any of the sites of the town from the hotel. They have great suggestions to do as well as access to museums. The breakfast buffet is top notch as well as...

We stayed for 3 nights at the hotel and had a fantastic stay. Its situated at the top of a hill near to the Castle, we enjoyed the climb back each night, although not ideal for those less fit. The hotel is light and airy and is beauifully decorated. As part of our package we were delighted to find a...

Everything about this hotel was literally amazing. Staff was very helpful, as it was my husband' s birthday we got a complimentary bubbly, the room was very clean and lovely bathroom. Its old hotel but modern, complementary coffee/tea etc facilities throughout the day was just what we needed when we took breaks from our itinerary. I would recommend this hotel...

This hotel sits at the top of a the hill, next to the castle and is accessed by a network of narrow winding cobbled streets. The location is perfect, with commanding views of Lisbon (from our room) and a real feeling of serenity despite being in the heart of the city and next to a major (and extremely impressive) tourist...

This hotel was wonderful and special in so many ways. The location is in a beautiful setting, was easy to find, and was within walking distance of restaurants and Fado bars in the Alfama. It was a quiet and relaxing place to return to after touring the sites in Lisbon. And, the breakfast spread was fabulous. I will definitely stay...

I cannot say enough about how much I loved this hotel. It was charming and tastefully decorated with old world flair. We found a great deal for a couples package, and received champagne, chocolates and port in our room. The views were great, and being next to a Castle felt very romantic (without having to give up modern luxuries). I've...

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.

The only hotel within St. George's Castle walls, at the top of Alfama, Solar Do Castelo is a small Mansion built on the site of the former Alcaçova Palace. With two floors and a mansard, an inner courtyard and garden, most part of the furniture was specially designed for the hotel in a Medieval Contemporary style. “Our room overlooked the courtyard and the peacocks from the castle often flew in and at night a fire pit was lit which was great to sit beside. We were on a 'Romantic Lisbon' package with Expedia and that included in our room. The bed was very big and the bathroom toiletries were Molton Brown which I think says it all about the quality of the hotel.”
