Friendly welcome from reception and all staff. Excellent breakfast and tea/coffee/water available at all times. Lovely courtyard to sit in. Relaxing atmosphere away from the busy Lisbon streets. Good room with nice toiletries. Plain exterior to hotel but lovely inside. Need sensible shoes for all the cobbled streets outside where not every taxi will venture!

This hotel is located in the heart of Alfama. The common areas, courtyard and living room are luxurious, but at the same time homey. An amazing breakfast buffet. The staff was friendly and helpful. The only reason, I am not giving it a 5 star review was our room. It was decently sized for Europe, but it was located on...

We stayed here on our anniversary weekend, and what a treat! The room was full of charm and history, and we loved the coyness of the room we were given. The bottle of port was a treat, and enjoyed after a long day of walking around. Nice big bathroom, amenities such as a hair dryer included, and lots of maps...

A fine place to stay with excellent service. The location in the Alfama district is splendid, the local bus to take you into Lisbon centre had all the atmosphere of a village bus - lots of chat between the driver and the regulars, all adds to the charm of the area. The restaurant in the castle itself is well worth...

An oasis of calm in an area full of tourists. Just what we wanted after 7 days walking the Alentejo Coast with Inntravel. A bottle of port in our room was most welcome, however a bottle of water would not have gone amiss. They also provided me with a bottle of champagne to celebrate my birthday, free of charge. The...

It was a lovely hotel. The rooms was a little small but very nicely decorated, good quality toiletries and free tea & coffee all day. We liked the location which is up a steep hill and quiet in the evening. But it isn't suitable for anyone who doesn't like walking up hills!!

This is a very charming, quiet, little hotel just like everyone else said - we agree. That said, let's be very clear that it's at the very top of a very steep hill so with slick cobbled streets so be prepared. If you're in good shape, no problem. Otherwise, you should be prepared to take a either a bus or...

This probably falls into the boutique hotel category. Built into the old town, to the side of Castel do Sao Jorge it is a conversion full of character with a discrete frontage in keeping with the heritage area. With only some 20 rooms the service is personal and very helpful. There is a nice courtyard garden for breakfast or simply...

Solar do Castelo is a great little hotel on the top of the hill in the Alfama district of Lisbon. It is build into the walls of the old fort. Alfama is the old part of town and on a hill with steep narrow cobble stone streets. Not for those with mobility issues. But we had a wonderful time walking...

My wife and I stayed here at the end of a holiday walking along the Costa Vicentina and we wanted to take the opportunity of visiting Lisbon over 2 days. We couldn't have selected a better location adjacent to the castle and once we passed through the doors from the street we entered a tranquil world and the bustle of...

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
