The Downtown Guesthouse really offers bang for the buck. The location couldn't be better, within walking distance of all the main attractions in the old town. The airport bus stops around the corner and the tram lines and metro are within minutes of walking. Also, cheap restaurants and cafes are just a few streets away. Staff is very helpful and...

We stayed two nights in this guest house on our Portugal trip. The rooms we had (305 & 306 if I remember correctly) were your average guest house quality probably from IKEA. The room also included a small TV and a safe. However the safe wasn't bolted to the wall so you could've just picked it up and carried it...

This place was just filthy. The floor was dirty, the sheets were stained, the bedding was heavily stained, and the shower was full of mold and mildew (see pictures). It also took 30 minutes to check in because the guy working kept stopping to do other things. I asked for restaurant recommendations and was told to go to any restaurant...

We booked our stay for 7 nights. On arrival the staff was very friendly and the room seemed very clean. in the first morning several mosquito-like bites appeared on the skin. On four consecutive days the severity of the bites increased and made me awake early in the morning 5-7 bites per night), my partner had only few bites during...

Upon arrival we first were a bit sceptical, as the entry area looks quite shabby. But once you're inside, everything looks nice and clean. Staff are very friendly and helpful. We booked a double room and were positively surprised by the size and style of the room. The room looked, and was furnished, to the standard of a mid-priced hotel,...

We stayed here three nights on our trip to Lisbon. The hostel is situated right next to Rossio square; this means you have all the interesting areas of the town within walking distance. Perfect for a long weekend exploring Lisbon by foot. Staff members were very nice and welcoming and all spoke english. They answered all our questions and gave...

Great stay. Everything in the guesthouse is new, the rooms are clean and there is lots of light, my room had a shared bathroom with a new shower cabin and a good hot shower, shower cleanliness was ok. Sleep quality was good, the street outside is not too noisy at night even if you choose to open the windows, and...

My friend booked this hotel for us and I was a little sceptical when it turned out to be a hostel as I've had bad experiences before in super budget accommodation. However, I could not have been more wrong. The hotel is ideally situated in the Rosia district close to a number of pretty squares and restaurants, and not far...

If you are a budget traveller and planning to be in Lisbon just for few days, I think it's the best choice. It's excellent location, right next Rossio train station (really recommend trip to Sintra) and city centre. There are nice, clean and good looking rooms with possibility of your own bathroom. What I only seemed annoying were too thin...

Staying in Chiado & Carmo

Neighbourhood Profile
Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.
