We planned a 3 days trip to Lisbon with our two children. I've heard of this hotel a couple of years ago from a friend who stayed there. Before reserving, my husband has been in contact with the staff to organise the reservation of restaurants (no restaurants in the hotel) and he was already impressed by his hospitality and attitude.... We booked in for a few nights to get over jet lag before embarking on a cycling adventure. Palacio Belmonte was everything we expected and made even more special to be upgraded to the "honeymoon " suite. A three level unit, with the bed being located in the top of the tower, with a stunning 360degree view . Yes its... More

We booked this based on reviews etc however did not have specific expectations. It is not a hotel for everyone as on checking in there is a tour given and you are advised it's your palace to enjoy. We booked the Gil Vincente terrace suite. Not the cheapest but also not the dearest. We rarely saw any other guests, and... More

This is an absolute jewel. About 10 rooms located in an old palace situated on the hill next to Lisbon castle, with fantastic views of the city. The rooms are of varying sizes, with the small ones maybe a bit too small, but the rest quite palatial. The staff is exceptional and never seen. You feel you are living in... More

Beautiful little palace, but not worth the money. Palacio Belmonte is a beautiful and nicely restored palace. Unfortunately the prices are outrageously high for what is offered. The smallest room is as cupboard for 400 Euros. Staying there feels like spending time at someones private home, almost intruding. This is definitely not a "five star" or a "luxury hotel".The garden... More

We stumbled across this beautiful place on our way up to the Castelo. In desperate need for food we quickly ordered the ham/cheese sandwich, cheese plate and some beers. Well. It is a cheese plate that we will remember forever! In the history of all cheese plates, never has one been so welcome, so cheese-filled and so delicious - I... More

This place is magical. Unlike a hotel in many ways, more like the home of wealthy eccentric friends in an exotic locale. The public rooms, the piano nobile, were filled with antiques and modern art. The gardens were strange and beautiful. And above all, the service was top notch.

We loved the palace and the service from Maria, we felt at home from the start (first thing Maria said: lets bring these young people to their nest). Walking through the palace is like a small adventure, so many amazing rooms. We stayed at the Gil Vincente suite which is an amazing room with a great terrace and a perfect... More

Wow what an incredible hotel, probably the best I have ever stayed at! The Palace is second to none and restored to a very high standard. We stayed in the Bartolomeu de Gusamo suite located over three floors with amazing views from every level. The private terrace on the third floor is spectacular for breakfast, evening drinks or just sun... More

We spent a few days in this hotel located in an astonishing old building however tariffs are absolutely outrageous and services are far from expectations! Prices range from € 400 (a cupboard!) to € 2,500, breakfast included. For some of the rooms the terrace is not accessible, hot water is at random, no light in the access corridor, no room... More

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
At the Belmonte there is no crowd, no noise, no chocolate on the pillow, no television, just fresh air, space, light, your own laughter and music. For an experience beyond compare, far back to our roots, to our childhood, to fantasy, let Palacio Belmonte be your house while discovering the wonderland of Portugal. Palacio Belmonte offers 10 suites, all different, all unique, some with terraces, winter garden or built in a Roman tower with 360º view or in a Muslim one on top of a 40 meters high rock, all equipped with fully modern bathrooms, natural ventilation, a Mediterranean garden and black marble swimming pool to relax, read or dream. House of the Earl of Belmonte, Cabral and the Marquis of Atalaia for the past 500 years, the Belmonte is a stunning sculpture, a 2197 years synthesis of Portuguese history. It became a few years ago the House of a Landscape Collector. He then decided to open his house to a very few for whom luxury is synonymous of encountering one's emotions. Palacio Belmonte prides itself on delivering memorable unique customized experiences for those who choose to stay with us. For this reason Palacio Belmonte suggest experiences that can be personalized for you, whether it be a fabulous sunset in a yacht on the Tejo River, a private tour to unique architectural features of old Lisbon, your own private Fado singer, a special day out with wine, olive oil tastings and Lusitano horses in the Alentejo or maybe a dinner at the unique local "Tascas" in which you will experience the real authentic Portuguese hospitality. The Belmonte is the most veiled secret in Lisbon... And definitely a place to experience! History, Architecture, Culture, Sustainable Development... Here you will not find a standard accommodation but a single life option! While receiving the highest level of service, you will be merged by this deep philosophy of well being, exclusivity, simplicity, natural comfort, intimacy and introspection.
