Travellers' Choice
Set on the absolute waterfront of Cascais’s dramatic Atlantic coastline, Farol Hotel reflects the unique charm of the township. Delightful old-world houses and cobbled streets frame a graceful bay on Portugal’s spectacular Estoril Coast to tell the story of a bygone era. The capital, Lisbon and the international airport are an easy 35-minute drive along excellent roads. A local train also runs between the city and Cascais. Lisbon is served by full service and budget airlines from all the major European hubs, which include Frankfurt, Paris, London and Zurich plus Stockholm, and Moscow. Arrive fuss-free and in style at Lisbon International Airport with a pre-arranged Farol Hotel limousine to meet you and transfer the short scenic trip to Cascais. As a proud member of prestigious Design Hotels, Farol Hotel is a wonderfully eclectic composition of adventurous architecture that embraces a remodeled 19th century private mansion that was once owned by the Count of Cabral, together with unique contemporary additions. The result is an inspire union of the old and the new. The Farol Hotel has a non-smoking policy in all its areas.

Great hotel overall with amazing location and wonderful quirky modern decor. They seem to have staffing problems as we were not offered a welcome drink or shown the facilities. Our room 307 was huge with 3 windows overlooking the sea. However the tiny bathroom was a Black hole! Badly designed and certainly needs improving. Cannot see the point of having complex body shower equipment if the water is low pressure. The bedroom did not have a mirror.

Our second visit to Cascais and our first to the Farol ... we absolutely love both. The Farol's oceanside location simply can't be matched by any other hotel in the town. The setting is spectacular ... the views are unbeatable. Easy walking distance to everything downtown--parks, museums, restaurants, and beaches. Staff was friendly, helpful, and always willing to go the extra mile. Decor is chic, contemporary, fun, and whimsical--loved the artwork inside and outside. Our contemporary, very comfortable room came with oceanview terrace and gardens. Oceanside pool was fantastic with lots of terraced and poolside lounging areas. Parking was plentiful. Contrary to some other reviews, we consider the Farol a good value and worthy of its five-star rating. OK, charging for the coffee pods in the rooms is cheesy, but not a deal-breaker in our book. From our own homeowning experiences, we know how hard the ocean is on facilities and things, so we can live with a little rust on the loungers and gutters. The Farol is still the hands down BEST place to stay in Cascais.

Agree with the recent reviews below. We had just stayed at a true 5 star hotel in Porto that was fabulous. The Farol hotel does not live up to the 5 star classification. The location and views are amazing, probably the best in Cascais but the hotel is run down. There is rust on the rooftops, around the entrance to the reception and around the pool. The sheets were so scratchy that it made for an uncomfortable night sleep. And yes, they charge you for coffee and tea in rooms. If the price were more reasonable I would stay again just because of the location but it was not worth the over 450 euros I was paying.

First, the hotel made "an upgrade" and showed us the room with "sea view" that had a thin line of blue and an iron fence outside the window, right above the restaurant with the air conditioners and all the noise that the open roof restaurant was creating. After we disagreed to stay in that room, they were managing for an hour the other solution and gave a room downstairs. When the night began, the noise outside from the air conditioner that apparently was not functioning well was unbelievable. It was not ours, as in the room it didnt work. When I was called to the reception and asked to solve it, they answered rudely that nothing can be done. So I havent slept for the whole night, noise was starting and stopping, starting again. The door to the garden opens the ways that you can easily hurt your fingers, against all possible rules of secure usage, so I hurt my finger. Overall, the prices in the restaurants etc are high, the service is average, the food is good, but the problem with the lack of adequate understanding and solving problems spoilt the experience.

While you expect to pay more when you go to Cascais, this was labeled with luxury prices, but didn't really deliver. The room was fine, and the views were very cool, but we had booked a room with a balcony and didn't get one. And the details were not cared for. The pool area, while again, having a nice view, didn't really deliver on the niceities you expect. And the breakfast was very disappointing. Additionally, when booking the hotel, the rate made it seem that there was a gym in house, and there isn't (only one that is nearby and requires 25 Euro a day to use). I would probably recommend a different hotel to others.
