ENVIRONMENT, PEACE AND CULTURE - A LIFE EXPERIENCE "QUINTA DO MARTELO" - The ethnographic and gastronomic truth - The best of our tradition At "Quinta do Martelo", we intended to replace a genuine Azorean rural setting, starting with the buildings and props, to the food, surroundings and ways of life. Here we can observe and experience the entire evolution of culinary culture, ethnographic and civilization of the Azores, over the centuries. To the visitor who comes live with us, it's offered the true ambience of an Azorean rural house. In these houses, we intend to replace strictly an authentic environment, starting with the must genuine construction, furniture of the highest quality, the result of research and survey of traditional knowledge of architecture, decoration and other equipment from the beginning of settlement, without neglecting the more modern refinements of comfort. It is also given the opportunity to show both rural chores and the remaining traditional arts and crafts. The accommodation available, is spread over several houses, all different, examples of what best is possible to find in decorative furniture made in this island over the past four centuries, covering types from the settlement to the last century. At "Quinta do Martelo" we can find the finest cuisine of this island that has been awarded the 1st place in the contest "Gastronomy - National Heritage" and other numerous different prizes. Everything here is biologically produced and consumed in the restaurant "Ti Manel da Quinta"

We had some difficulties to find, because of Navigation system. If we came from other side, we would have seen the sign for the small, narrow road. The interior of the restaurant is just a historic dream! Time travel hundred years back, and the food is very traditional Portuguese, but delicious! Just great! We talked a lot with the service lady, she's very friendly and helpful and it was very early for a dinner here. If you come to Terceira, you should not miss this place, and if I come back to this island, for sure I will come again.

This is a absolutely amazing place. It takes you back to a time where everything was simple. The beauty of the Quinta is laid out by nature and its surroundings. Back in a time where everything was simple. From the basic traditional home to the corner store. The flavor of the kitchen reminds me of back in time where grandma cooked those delicious Azorean meals. It's litterly from farm to table. Home made and delicious. It takes you from a Coble stone roads to memory of what life was like in that time. Great place great experience.

We booked a self contained small house in the nice farm. Lots of old artifacts are there, showing the old farm life in the Island, a grocery of the 40´s or 50's still more or less intact. But all the dream ended when we entered our house. The smell of disinfectant to kill wood bugs was overwhelming: And this little bugs would fall from the wood ceiling, The chemical smell was so strong that my friend had to sleep with an handkerchief over her nose. The place was being eaten alive by the bugs. I had no particular problem with the bugs, but with the smell. I had to leave and book a room in the village where I stayed the rest of my holidays. No reimbursement , he refuse, The owner of this smelly place did a joke about the bugs: " oh we don't charge anything for the bugs, still they keep you company". My friends stayed in the house and endured the nights there. At breakfast they spot a cockroach in the floor. The place is literally ridden with bugs. It is however a very nice place to visit to see how was Portuguese farm life in the old days...Ah and we never used the kitchen, was so damp and dirty.

We stumbled upon this place quite unexpectedly. I asked for restaurant recommendations at the airport tourist info and they gave us a few names on the map. The first one was closed, so this was 2nd on the list - had to ask a local for directions since it was not in any of the towns. What we found was more like an old fashioned village experience, not just lunch but a whole visit ending with a great meal of slow food, lots of it and lovingly prepared, locally sourced, free-range meats, well worth the wait. The young waitress was friendly, helpful and nice to chat with.

This is not your typical experience...and that is the beauty of staying here ! First of all the owner truly loves what he has built/restored...and rightly so. It isn't easy to fully explain Quinta do Martelo. It is part B&B, part Museum (you must tour the grounds), part historical village but 100% an exceptional experience. But be warned...if you are looking for a 5 star Hilton experience this isn't it...but there are 1000s of Hiltons and only one Quinta do Martelo. Thus, I will always remember my stay at Martelo.
