Positive:
The location right on the harbor, less than 2 minutes walk to the famous Peter Café Sport; most of the equivalent hotels (with the exception of the Pousada in the old fortress in the harbor, which is closed in winter) are located on a hill with a somewhat arduous walk;
own free underground parking in the building
Friendly staff throughout the building
Uncomplicated check in/check out
Decent room facing the inner courtyard, good sleeping comfort, bathroom with everything necessary
Hygiene and cleanliness throughout the building is OK
Daily thorough room cleaning
Negative:
The room was very thin, every noise in the neighboring room was clearly audible;
on the ground floor, including the bar and restaurant, there was a draft everywhere and it was too cold - in summer this is acceptable, but in January it is impossible;
Kitchen performance, as unfortunately in several BENSAUDE hotels, was unsatisfactory to abysmally bad; the menu itself doesn't promise much good
The staff in the kitchen and some in the restaurant service were always friendly, but - as was also the case in other hotels in the group - poorly or not at all trained
Neutral:
The breakfast buffet was OK
Price:performance ratio:
consistent and reasonable given the cheap offers in the off-season
Conclusion:
If the quality of the kitchen service and some of the restaurant service were improved, a full 4-point rating would be justified, but until then unfortunately only 3 1/2 out of 5 possible points

Hotel's Favourite
As part of the Azorean Bensaude Hotel Collection the Hotel Do Canal located in the centre of Horta is one of the best locations to stay at on the island of Faial.
Although the furnishings are a bit outdated, all rooms and suites are in good condition and all areas are very well maintained and clean. The hotel will soon undergo a complete renovation to refresh the technology and design of the hotel.
My suite had a sleeping and living area with a view of the volcano on the neighbouring island of Pico, a bathroom with bathtub/shower combination and toilet as well as a separate guest toilet. Two televisions and free wireless internet completed the facilities.
Meals can be taken in the Clipper restaurant. In addition to a small breakfast buffet with high-quality local products, a small buffet with starters, hot main courses, a selection of desserts and cheese is usually offered in the evening.
All in all, with its central location and upscale facilities, the hotel is the perfect base for exploring one of the most beautiful islands in the Azores.

The hotel (despite being almost in front of the Marina and close to Porto Pim beach) has a faded and dated effect,
The room, in any case decent, is equipped with the necessary and has a micro terrace overlooking the roundabout with the beginning of La Marina in front. The theme of the hotel's decor (which also has a pseudo fitness center with exercise bike, small Jacuzzi tub, sauna) is maritime style. The reading room on the first floor is not bad.
Friendly reception staff.
The quality of the breakfasts significantly lowers the score > rather poor not so much in the offer but in the quality level. Orange juices that taste like nothing, terrible espresso coffee.
Excellent parking in the basement > very convenient.
The hotel has an excellent location for visiting Horta and on foot you start right to the left of the hotel the seafront which (twenty minutes on foot) leads to the ferry terminal for the island of Pico.

Terrible experience here and regretted choosing this hotel on our trip almost instantly when I got inside. Looks fine from outside however It was by far the worst hotel I have stayed in Portugal over several decades. Firstly, their revenue management strategy is a scam that penalizes you if you book early. For example, by booking in advance (and them taking my money in advance) I lost around €100 based on the walk-up rates they dropped. When I complained they couldn’t care less and gave me the worst room in the hotel on a noisy road and demanded I pay €14 extra a night to upgrade, when I had been overcharged to begin with.
They nickel and dime you for everything, not even a bottle of water in the room.
Rude and argumentative staff at reception (31/12) when you question why the power sockets don’t work beside your bed (The answer: Because you have to switch the light on for it to work! What if you want to sleep? Not possible! Isn’t that a waste of energy and not sustainable? Who cares? He told me in the end to plug my phone to charge under the air con unit in the corridor (where there is no table so the phone should charge on the floor in the dark well away from the bedding area. Insane). This kind of nonsense. Keys stopped working regularly, went to change them, said he fixed them (still didn’t work), so 20 mins wasted.
Rooms are way past their prime with damaged and threadbare furniture. Wooden doors all scratched and bashed. Dust everywhere that is not visible at eye level, filthy air vents etc. The place is a dump, no one cares. The hotel chain promises “Azorean Hospitality” in all its marketing, this has nothing to do with it, let me tell you.
Skip and book another hotel or rental if visiting as this place will just cause you disappointment and/or stress dealing with management trying to screw you over and employees who don’t get the idea of providing basic amenities.

Dear Guest, We were very sad to read your negative review. Regarding your claims, and after an internal investigation, please consider our conclusions below: 1. The Guest specifically requested the housekeepers not to clean the room for the entire stay (3 nights). In this situation, we are not responsible for the dust that may have accumulated in the room, as this was an express request from the customer; 2. Only a change of towels was requested, in which the client personally delivered the dirty towels and collected the clean towels; 3. The room was cleaned and checked before customers checked in; 4. After the customers checked-out, the Hotel Management personally checked the ventilation and extraction grilles in the room, including the WC, and found that they were clean and without traces of dirt; 5. In the Azores Region there are no longer contingency plans and COVID procedures; 6. Regarding the prices, we kindly ask you to contact the Online Travel Agency since you did not book directly with the hotel; 7. Whenever the Guest contacted the Front Desk, the staff tried to help, but the guest was not available to listen to their suggestions/alternatives; 8- The Guest booked and paid for a standard room; superior rooms require a supplement. We are sorry that our Hotel did not meat your expectations. However, we hope to meat you again soon. Best regards. Hotel Management

The 3rd time I've been to this hotel in over a decade.
Nothing has changed all very adequate clean tidy Ra Ra
But the beds and pillows are hard and pillows too soft.
Breakfast is like groundhog day ,dinner passable and I do speak with authority as I am a chef
The fitness room an absolute joke in today's environment, the bike pedal was broken my entire trip
All in all passable for a 3* star at best .
Need to up the game for the rates you charge

Late arrival at 21:45 because delay of flight. Nothing to eat available at the hotel
Room service bad
Breakfast not worth of a 4 star hotel: coffee bad taste, eggs cold, fruits badly cut
Staff: very unfriendly at the reception; service personelle for breakfast badly dressed (one guy‘s trousers always slipped down)
Order of a Hambourger at lunch time lasted 45 minutes to provide it.
The only positive point is the location in front of the harbour

I like this hotel. The staff were friendly and the service was good. It was one of the few places where even the cleaning lady was very friendly. They were all nice from check in to check out.
The rooms were clean and cosy. There was only little space on the balcony.
Breakfast was a little small, but what I had was reasonably good.
It is a few meters from Pim beach.
It has free underground parking which I also ⁇ .
When we went the hotel was in works, however we did not feel disturbed by the noise, however the trolhas were quite "observatory" with the women. I understand that this can not be controlled by the hotel so it was just an observation.
As a point of improvement I would only say for staff at check in to give more information about the hotel services. They said the hotel had free jacuzzi service, however every day we tried to go and was always booked.

Nice hotel good size room central location near bars, restaurants and attractions. Our room was very close to the fitness center a bonus after our 7km Caldeira rim hike and I could use the jacuzzi. The jacuzzi, however, had only one jet working but if I positioned my calves over it it was very refreshing. The breakfast was abundant and without variation but it was nice to have every morning especially when you were catching an early ferry to Pico Island

This hotel is open because of its site by the harbour and nothing else.
From 1st sight the outside looks in need of a good clean the brickwork is filthy and the condition of the outside furniture is beyond repair.
Reception is overstaffed that no one wants to serve you.
The rooms are dark and need redecorating.
Basics such as tissues and flannels are missing from the bathroom.
Mini bar contains ONE bottle of carbonated water.
Rooms are very dusty and a double room is two singles pushed together.
Breakfast is acceptable but the lunch and dinner menu's feel like school dinners.
We saw no more than 3 tables being used for dinner an no one in the bar.
The open area is a disgrace and looks like an exercise yard!
Either do something to make the hotel attractive or shut it down

I stayed 4 nights in this hotel as part of a group. We were allocated rooms on the first floor at the back of the hotel, right on the busy one-way road around the town. I could have touched the pedestrians on the pavement and they could have climbed into my room. Traffic was constant and noisy, even at night with the window/door shut. We were woken at night, despite ear plugs, by motor bikes etc. It was too hot to sleep without aircon on (and one couldn't leave the door to the street open) but there was someone with a bad cough isolating in a room a few doors away on the same aircon circuit. Not good. I complained to reception and asked for another room but was told it was not possible to move. Besides, I was told, the rooms on the side have noise from the church bells! I offered to pay more to stay at the front but was told that was not possible either.
Quite apart from the noise, the room was tired and a bit grubby. Definitely no view of Pico, as advertised! The hotel is situated by the commercial port, at the other end of town from the ferry terminal.
The restaurant was dire. Our group of 9 arrived, as booked, at 7.30 pm, tired after 2 days of travel to get there. We waited until 9.30 for our starters despite the restaurant being almost empty and at 9.45, half the group were given main courses while the rest waited. The meal was finally finished at around 10.30. The food was poor. Apparently there was some problem in the kitchen. The next night we arranged to choose our meals after breakfast so they could get them ready for us at 7.30 pm then arrived to be told we were having a buffet dinner because of the problem in the kitchen. Buffet again on subsequent nights.
I'd really recommend another hotel choice. There are a couple of nice-looking hotels in Horta.
