We enjoyed our stay here from check in to check out. We had a wonderful room with mountain view. The English-speaking receptionist kindly checked the time of sunrise for a stunning vista to remember.
The hotel is in an excellent location within the walls of Marvao with guest parking at the door
Our room was small but very comfortable with BBC world news the first in nearly 6 weeks. Excellent show with abundant hot water. A lift helped with luggage.
Breakfast was very freshly prepared delicious fruit, cereals, breads and croissants, scrambled eggs, cheese, meats, jams more than anyone could eat with good coffee.
From here we walked from end to end of Marvao and loved every minute.
Thank you to our host and his lovely receptionist.

Hotel's Favourite
With its perfect location, and the availability of free on-site parking right in front, the Dom Manuel Hotel was a pleasure in which to spend two nights, in a superior room with king bed, castle view, and furnished patio, #202. See photos.
I believe our room was the best in the hotel. If you are prepared to pay extra for this category of room, you may wish to ask for #202.
Manuel and Celeste (and nephew Bruno) run a personal but very professional operation. Everything from the outdoor restaurant tables in front, to our individual guest room, to the breakfast room, was clean, tidy, and orderly. The guest rooms have been attractively renovated. While compact (as most European hotel rooms are), they are very functional, have decent storage space and three chairs, with one very comfortable corner chair for relaxing, small fridge, full length mirror, padded bed head, good lighting, and monogrammed sheets and towels. Bathroom had good water pressure, nice bath products, hair dryer, and magnifying makeup mirror.
They lack two things: face cloths, so bring your own if you use these, and coffee and tea making facilities in the room. They graciously provided us with a tray on which sat a kettle with two tea cups and saucers, napkins and sugar. You may wish to bring tea bags and coffee sachets. The safe requires a key, which we didn’t bother to request.
Breakfast was good, with fresh juice and fruits, scrambled eggs, the usual yogurts, cheeses, cold cuts, bread, pastries, and something we had not seen before, crepes.
Its location in this small, beautiful village is ideal. Two excellent restaurants are within a three minute walk, (Fago is exceptional and highly recommended), the tourist information office is a two minutes walk down the road, and steps leading up to the wall are almost adjacent to the hotel. It also has its own restaurant - open for breakfast, lunch and dinner - which was full both evenings of our visit.
5km away is an inviting public space on hot days, with free parking and access to the fluvial “river”, a public pool, and a snack bar with outside tables. Many Portuguese and Spanish families gathered here for picnics and water fun. We did not hear one English word the 2 hours we were there.
We wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else on a return visit to Marvao.

We really enjoyed our stay at this charming family run hotel during a cycle tour. The superb location and it’s surroundings enabled us to get a good feel for this gem of a place - spectacular views as a result of it’s prime position and proximity to the heart of the fascinating historic centre. The hotel is exceptionally well organised but welcoming nonetheless, and the interior is attractively laid out and colourfully furnished. Our room was spacious, well equipped and had a feeling of warmth and comfort. Dinner and breakfast were good quality and service was attentive, personable and professional. What a pity we only had one night, lovely hotel.

Marvão is a place of wonders: it's the views to the east and the west from the the old defence walls, it's the beautiful garden close to the castle, the castle itself facing the neighbouring castle across the fields and hills, but it is also the elegance and good taste of hotels I've had the good fortune to experience and enjoy, from the Eagles' Nest on top of the small town to the excellent hotel on its "ground floor".
Hotel El-Rei Dom Manuel (this Portuguese king had the good fortune to enjoy his throne in a realm his predecessors had made a place of wonders for him) is an elegant, comfortable and welcoming hotel. Its decoration is elegant and points in subtle ways to that past of wonders in this small kingdom between Spain and the Ocean.
Mr. Manuel Caio and his lady wife give you a hearty welcome and do everything they can to make your stay unforgettable, setting the tone for all staff. The hotel was known to me in past years because of its healthy and exquisite cuisine; this time my wife and I stayed at the hotel itself and all our needs, especially my wife's, were paid attention to and taken good care of. Our room, looking out eastwards, was clean, comfortable, elegantly decorated. The large, well-mattressed bed gave us a full week of refreshing night sleep.
The restaurant provided that good food we had known for a number of years. Its Alentejo cuisine is traditional, healthy and tasty. The wines, most of them from northern Alentejo (allow me to give full marks to the Altas Quintas wines), are good in quality and price. You can drink good wines at affordable prices in the Dom Manuel restaurant.
May I mention my favourite dessert? Do try the thinly sliced orange seasoned with olive oil, honey, cinnamon and walnuts. I hope to go back next year to enjoy it at every meal.

Greeted by very friendly receptionist, great spacious room.
Extremely comfortable bed with ample room in the bedroom which includes a large very clean bathroom en suite.
A fridge was also in the room a tv and dressing table.
Evening meal was probably one of the best I've had, fish was cooked to perfection. The other meals our party had included meat and vegetarian options.
The staff at the hotel were always friendly polite and very helpful, this is a hotel I would definitely recommend and will return to.
Marvao itself is a lovely place . This hotel was outstanding.

This small hotel has nice friendly staff. Rooms are big enough for 2 and spotless clean. In front of the hotel there is parking place for your car. After 8pm most of the tourists leave this mountain village and the city gets a special atmosphere. The views from here are beautiful. The hotel restaurant is simple, but good food and wine.

The location at the top of the mountain is perfect to enjoy the village from. They offer convenient parking and a yummy breakfast. The view out our window was breathtaking and we left it open anytime we were in the room. Check this place out. Well priced and wonderful.

It´s the perfect place to visit Marvão and the surrounding areas, like Castelo de Vide.
Everything was cristal clean, and the Hotel had been remodeled very recently (2010?).
The staff, was very helpfull and allways ther for you, even late night, just for a drink of tea.
The room, superior one, had the most incredible view to "Portagem", the small place 5 kilometers down hill, and with the best twisty road, with perfect tarmac.
Very good breakfast, in terms of quality and variaty.
Defenetly a place to come back again.
Relaxing and quite.
Wi-fi on everyroom for free.
