Detailed Reviews
This hotel was a super find and well placed a stone's throw from the centre.
Easy parking and the rooms were spacious The pool and shaded gardens with loungers were very welcome in searing heat. Somehow the gardens manged to catch the breeze.
Staff friendly and efficient.

Secure cctv covered car park, which is barrier controlled and free to hotel users.
Reception staff very friendly and accommodating, very good English spoken.
Our room was very good, spacious with a large en suite.
A fridge is in the room and a safe.
Only criticism is the lack of sockets for electrical items near to the bed. Had to use a bathroom socket to charge my tablet, as the tv socket was being used to charge the phone.
Having said that, the hotel is a few hundred years old with walls as thick as a cliff face, so accept some minor issues.
The hotel was brilliant, well kept outside as well as inside. Fantastic views over the city and surrounding areas. Historically one of the best locations available in Elvas.
Breakfast was good though the bacon and scrambled eggs were on the cold side. A great continental breakfast selection with yogurts and fresh fruit available also.
Staff were without exception faultless. Always friendly polite and helpful. We would definitely recommend this hotel and will return.

A gem of a hotel situated in beautiful Elvas. The architecture is amazing and if you are lucky enough to stay in one of the balcony rooms the views are really something to enjoy. We had a very lovely continental breakfast which we were able to enjoy in their beautiful courtyard. The staff cant do enough for you. The only thing I would recommend is that a bottle of water is made available in the rooms, hence why I have only given them 4*.

During our stay in Hotel São João de Deus, in August 2022 several things went wrong. Although most off the staff was very friendly, the cleaning staff was inconvenient and not friendly. The pool was filthy and there was no ice. The breakfast was mediocre, with lack of fresh fruit juice most of the days. The room was somewhat detiorated. The tv had also oroblem with the antenna and some channels could not be seen. It was also clearly understaffed. We will not saty at this hotel again.

I do not recommend
Elevator out of order… room on the second floor, not even a complimentary bottle of water in the room.
No instructions for the room's equipment, not even how to call another room.
Emergency numbers were nowhere to be found either.
TV remote without the back with the batteries always falling out.
Application on pool chairs to order food and drinks that gives an order placed message but doesn't work... I found out after more than half an hour of waiting when I asked if it would take much longer.
Anything you asked for, before I finished speaking the answer was you have to pay when I bring it.
Cocktail… there we got a “species” of caipirinha… there was nothing on the menu, if there was even a menu because we asked for it and it never appeared…
Tiny pillows for a bedroom/bed and King price.
Support toilet on the ground floor damaged
The breakfast does the job for what you pay for, but there is no differentiating element.
Various unidentified foods.
For a 4 star hotel it is quite mediocre
Most of the staff are friendly, but not enough to come back.

Although it was during Covid, things could have been so much better. Dull staff, pre-ordered breakfast for two came for one. Cold eggs and bacon were sent back and still arrived with only one breakfast for two. Bathroom absolutely freezing and a very smelly toilet. Booked for 3 nights left after one. Never again!

A place from another era with the smell and treatment of another era. Old, with a rancid and bleach smell. I understand that it should have been renovated many years ago and certainly lost its 4 star rating. The wifi doesn't work and a waiter chases you to make you pay 6 euros!! for a Beirao liqueur. Honestly, if you can, try to find another place in a wonderful city like Elvas.

Very central hotel, you can visit some places on foot, friendly service, we stayed in the king room, huge bed and room, good cleaning, just should have more electrical plugs. Bathroom smells like pipes. We didn't choose breakfast as it was 12 euros per person, we thought it was expensive

We cannot deny that we expected more from the hotel. The room was spacious but there were only two plugs (one for tv and one for fridge). In the end we loaded the phones in the bathroom. The rooms very far from the elevator (but very far). The interior rooms have the handicap that can sit people chatting on the sofas behind the windows, and do not allow rest. The reception theme must also be touched upon... Sometimes 3 and sometimes none (bad luck than just when we needed it). Location good. Breakfast very good. Pool very well.

The hotel has definitely seen better days. The garden courtyard, view from the veranda, pool deck, private parking and location are all wonderful. Everything else is another matter. Cleanliness is an issue, room and furniture is super dated (including the lack of outlets in the room), breakfast is average, soundproofing is a big issue (let's just say we heard all the nighttime adventures of our neighbours), linens were stained, curtains dusty and we could hear the street.
