In the heart of Alto Alentejo and situated between Elvas (7 Km) and Badajoz (15 KM), Quinta de Santo Antonio is a veritable oasis for those who seek tranquility, beauty and superior quality of service. Quinta de Santo Antonio currently encompasses 17 hectares and lies within the Herdade da Amoreira estate. It portrays the Alentejo in an atmosphere rich in tradition which takes one back in time. The main building, in conjunction with its chapel erected in 1715, embodies the finest architecture of the traditional estates, and blends harmoniously with the XVIII gardens and the distinctive rural Alentejo landscape. Taking into consideration the architecture of the ancestral building, the interior was completely restored and currently possesses 30 rooms in which the emphasis is on tailor-made traditional decoration. Each room is equipped with a private bathroom in marble, hairdryer, towels and linen, amenities kit, extra pillows, air conditioning, television, telephone, minibar and a private safe.

Detailed Reviews
Small friendly Hotel on main road just outside the village only 15 mins drive from Funchal-Santa Cruz airport set amongst woods at 660m above sea level. It has a very pleasant garden with fishponds and exotic plants and a patio area with seating to take the mountain air whilst having drinks from the bar. The Hotel has a nice restaurant serving local Madeiran fare and the staff are very friendly and helpful always ready with a genuine smile. The rooms are clean with TV and large en-suite facilities and there is a separate TV lounge with Pool table and other games. The only drawback is the locked front door which is opened from inside the Hotel following a ring on the bell - the reception is not permanently manned and on one occasion there was no-one available to open the door - it was necessary to wake other guests to gain access. The village of Santo da Serra has a small park with caged animals and picnic areas. There are a number of bars and small restauarants in the village and a couple of small supermarkets.
On Sunday there is a market and the September Cider festival is worth a visit with open air barbeques where you cook your Espetada (big kebab on a laurel stick) washed down with the Cider of the festival - lovely stuff. I would certainly stay there again depsite the problem with the front door which is the only black mark.

In the countryside a beautifuly renovated 19th century mansion is perfect. The air is so pure, the pool is lovely and there is plenty of beautiful gardens to walk around in. Marvelous fountains and statues make this hotel one of my favorite family getaways. The people are friendly and the food is amazing. Some of the best portuguese food that I have ever had and I am portuguese. And honestly it is all you want in a five star hotel but without the big bill. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

At First glance we thought that we had the wrong place and driven up to a farm (was raining heavily at the time). We checked in at the old building as we advised the reception staff that I was travelling with my elderly parents. We managed to park right outside within a few steps from our rooms. We ate at the restaurant that night but not worth the money you pay thought it was handy. we would have ventured out to the town but with my elderly parents would have been a challenge.
Overall the weather spoil't for us but needless to say that the setting and surroundings would make it a perfect location for countryside retreat.. Probably return in the Spring...

We discovered quinta de santo antonio about 16 years ago. For us, after all these years, it is a place of rest, friendship, beauty! The gardens are beautifull and well kept, the swimming pool is lovely, the rooms nice, clean, charming! The staff is helpfull. But more over we find there friendship, nice people, rest, good food. The two sisters, (owners) do everything to please the clients. When our children were small, they enjoyed the environment and found other (portuguese) friends. (We are Belgian). And now that they are grown up adults, they wouldn't miss a vacation at the quinta. I really do not understand the negative comments... Come and see and judge. The price is amazing for what you get, in positive sense of course! For us the quinta is a dream, um sonho. Or as the portuguese say: a little bit my home, a minha terra!!

I found this place really hard to rate as the Quinta itself could be fabulous, but just needs a bit of money & tlc spending on it. Our room was lovely - large, beautifully furnished with 2 windows looking over the lovely gardens.
Staff were very friendly & spoke excellent English, Wifi coverage was really good. There was a fridge in the room with a couple of bottles of water in, which was very useful.
The real downside for us was the restaurant - the food was terrible - I had 'crumbed lamb chops' - which turned out to be tiny chops covered in breadcrumbs & fried to within an inch of complete cremation. It wasn't what I expected, but I eat them with an open mind, but they were awful. My husband had the duck, which was better & it came with some lovely fresh pineapple & kiwi fruit, so we had high hopes of fresh fruit for breakfast. How wrong we were - the only fruit available next morning was tinned fruit salad & tinned peaches. The orange juice looked decidedly 'off' & the coffee was weak.
This place could be sensational, but as it is now,it's sadly, somewhere we won't be returning to.

was told this hotel is close to the city wllswalls.
It it in fact 11kms down the road.Rooms are very basic, baqthroom not clean.
Reception appeared to hope we would not talk to them.
Large gardens good ,but under repair. Found the swimming pool after 3 attempts. no signs as it is a fair way from the house.
Resturant had a good name ,but we found thethe food not good at all. The wine loist was out of the first3 bottles i chose, all locals. Service ended spending more time in the kitchen than on the floor.
All in all a great disapointment on all fronts.
Spend you money someweere else.

Last week I went back to Quinta de Santo Antonio to spend a couple of days' rest. This is one of the most charming places I know. The hotel is located in the hilly countryside next to the Spanish frontier and is part of a large farming estate. You have to drive 1 km on dirt road inside the property to get to the rococo mansion that houses the hotel. The XVIII century building is surrounded by a large italianate park with fish ponds, marble statues, and a small chapel. The food at the restaurant is excellent Portuguese cuisine with local specialties. Try the peasants' bread soup flavored with coriander, the "Açorda Alentejana", and the sweet plums in syrup from Elvas!

Great rural setting close to historical Elvas. The hotel gardens offered a pleasant space to relax in the autumn sun. Comfortably furnished rooms, although in-room wi-fi was weak, but that only served to send us to one of the comfortable lounges or the terrace. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was excellent, the lamb was delicious and fresh pineapple and kiwi with the duck was a delightful surprise.
The only real negative was that the only wheelchair access to the breakfast conservatory was via an outside terrace, fine on a sunny autumn morning. We hope it is not raining when we return in January.

Easy to find, this is a truly charming hotel that will recharge your batteries from the city life in a couple of days staying there...
Close to the historic city of Elvas, this was the perfect hideout for a couple of days of relax and exploration of the surroundings.
Once you get there it looks pretty much like a farm. A big farm in the middle of nowhere with a 3-5 mile radius of absolutely nothing else but the highway (cruises by at approximately 1 mile and can be seen - not heard - from the pool area).
The original idea, I believe, was exactly that but it was then adapted to a hotel and then expanded with a new wing that was obviously built after the main building in order to accommodate more guests.
It ended up fine. It's a tidy space. Clean - which could be hard as it is in plain countryside - and well presented.
The staff is also very sympathetic, providing you with everything you need and need to know.
Gardeners are always tending the gardens so there's no secret to the beauty all the photo's show - it's just hard work. Justified by all means.
The gardens are beautiful and I believe the reason there's a big large room in the middle of the gardens behind the pool is because this makes perfect sense for a wedding or a baptism... Perfect scenario!
Beautiful well treated pool where we spent many hours - especially in the morning and late in the afternoon. And big as well!
As for the rooms, I can't scale them up to perfection like the outdoors. We had a corner room on the new wing and we were surprised by the old furniture, the raw floor and some spider webs here and there close to the balcony door. Not much of a deal I agree, but could be improved. A facelift would make this hotel absolutely perfect - and I'm talking about the new wing. As for the old one, either is already mended or some complaints will rise eventually.
The room itself is spacious and the bed is a good one - no humps. The balcony is great and gives direct access to the gardens. Being in a corner room we had the privilege of no one being able to see us in the balcony so we could have the door always open - oh, the spider webs - or just sit outside and have a glass of wine enjoying the tranquil landscape. Yes, it stands on a small hill so there's actually a great view from the frontside of the whole hotel - rooms, gardens and pool.
One huge detail - despite the hotel appearing to be full, we heard absolutely nothing in our room during our stay. The car space right behind the room was always empty and no harassments of any kind from no one. Definitely a plus!
And yes, you have to drive to get here. There's no other way to go there but by car.
The breakfast was great, plenty and varied. English variations and regional treats like cakes and cheese make up for it. Oh, one detail, 1 euro for the espresso by the way - it's kind of a rip-off but what will we, caffeine addicts do without one?
All in all it was a good stay. The value for money we managed to get was awesome. If I had to pay the full price I would've rated it one star short.

We read the reviews in advance and did expect the hotel to be charming, but a little run down. It was, yet the quietness of the place and the tranquil and romantic surroundings made us really love the stay, and sad that we had to leave after just two nights. The beds were nice to sleep in, and the staff really friendly. The children loved the birds, the donkey nearby and the pool. The breakfast was good though a little basic the first day, then second it had home made jams and fruits and vegetables from the quinta, various healthy breads and freshly pressed juices. It was fabulous. we are definitely going back with friends and kids at another occation.
