Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Incredible country house bordering on the edge of a lake. Serene, peaceful and (sorry for cliche) but food for the soul. Isabel and Joao are fabulous hosts. Dogs, cats, chicken, sheep. Canoeing, walking, picnics. Blue skies and night skies festooned with stars. Rabbits in the road. Fire places and oak trees. Sunsets like paintings. Highly recommended for those who find peace and stillness in nature.

Two dogs, two lazy-as-it-should-be cats, two welcoming owners, two slices of cinnamon cake, we were two (almost three), and a house like an ark. Wide, strong and silent, walls like a book of stories, pierced by mysterious lights, just waiting for the water to rise, just saving us all.
On arrival, leaving the road of tar, the learning of sailing begins floating up and down the gentle slopes of the Alentejo hills; then one must feel the hot breeze while gazing the still waters; finally it is allowed to jump aboard the suspended balinese beds and oscillate wildly.
We two took the magical mystery suite, or better said, sweet.
(everything else, good, has been said)

Stunning. This house is absolutely beautiful and a stay here will be a memory that will stay with you forever. A large architect designed house with floor to ceiling windows in the living room and the upstairs bedroom suite overlooking a gorgeous lake and a landscape filled with wildflowers in purple and yellow and hundreds of olive trees. The house has been furnished with a collection of beautiful things and great furniture. The attention to detail is impressive; innovative creative light fittings, sumptuous comfy sofas, one wall decorated in gorgeous green roof tiles. This place is truly a one off. We booked the suite which is an incredible room with equally incredible views from wrap round huge windows and a private balcony. The room is huge as is the 4 poster bed; there are two wardrobes, a small fridge, air-con, round dining table, lounge chairs, sofa, no in room safe but you don't need one, you can lock up your room and you have the only key. Its totally secure. We saw the downstairs rooms too and they are all spacious with large beds and great decor. The ensuite bathrooms throughout are beautiful, done in the polished coloured plaster Moroccan style. The colours are lovely. High quality bed linens and towels and a hair dryer. Plenty of pillows. Blankets for cooler nights. Breakfast included which offered a great selection and cooked eggs if you want them. The caretakers of the house Joao and Isabel are fantastic people, they don't speak a lot of English but we got on great with them and spent a lot of time laughing. They do speak French and Spanish as well as Portuguese. They did so much for us. Free use of several kayaks to take out on the lake. No wi-Fi but you get good phone coverage, and to be honest you won't care about anything once you get to this gorgeously serene place. We booked 5 nights and extended it to 7. We really didn't want to leave. You will need a car to get here and there are loads of great places to visit and lots of places to eat within easy
driving distance. You could also hire the whole house and bring friends; 7 bedrooms inc the suite. We are definitely planning to do it as we are desperate to
go back. Treat yourself and go, you won't regret it. This is easily the most beautiful part of Portugal and lovely and quiet.

...there was not a terrible smell coming out from all the toilets
...there was enough water for our children evening shower
...above all, the owner was not so rude

We booked the entire house with a group of friends for the New Year. The smell was there the 2 days. We ran out of hot water on Dec 31st, so some of us did not take the shower we were planning to before the New Year's diner. The owner was not there, but the couple in charge was very kind. However the owner kept on depriving their authority, asking to talk to us directly on a very unappropriate way.

Indeed, during the goup`s stay, two regrettable anomalies occurred in the house. However, on new year`s day water ran hot and the atmosphere that was felt in the Casa da Ermida de Santa Catarina led the group to ask for a late check out in order to be able to stay for lunch. As I had the chance to explain, the only reason we couldn`t fulfil this request was because the whole house required cleaning and tidying for the arrival of clientes who were booked for that same day. Had it not been so, the new guests would have had no access to the house`s common área which would have been taken over by the group having lunch. Carlos Guedes de Amorim

This is a finding. If you want to spend a week, or weekend, amongst friends, or if you have a big family, rent the all house and have a great time. The location is spectacular, the house is very well decorated and planned to be a resting place. Great sofas, balcony, tv, stereo, fireplace, books, magazines. The suite upstaris it's something worth seeing and staying. Huge with a great view to the lake closeby from all the sides of the room.
The couple that takes care of the house is very nice and friendly.
Tha house has 6 rooms and 1 suite. I would recommend to rent the entire house with friends or familiy so you can have more privacy.

They have Kayaks and windsurf boards to explore the lake just in front of the house, and back, and side...

Ideal to tracking. Ask for restaurants near by for tipical food from Alentejo and Portugal.

I am a home design blogger and I'm used to see and publish beautiful houses.
Me and my boyfriend have a beautiful house ourselves, by a river, and enjoy every day spent there (unfortunately not as many as we would like...).
So, it is very hard to find a place we feel it's worth the trip. It takes hours of research and comments reading. It has to fill a long list of requirements! To be inspiring is one of them.
Casa da Ermida was worth it. One of the most beautiful houses in the world. There are many houses by lakes, but very few are so well connected to the environment in such a simple and balanced way.
Alentejo is my favorite spot in the country. Now, there is one place more to stay any time I feel I have to go there.
Just one more thing: I love animals, so I appreciated the cats company, and the sheeps, and the chickens and ducks... It makes the place even more special.
Nice bedroom. Very good breakfast. Love the kaiak and the hanging beds, by the water. Joao e Isabel were there, without being there, making us feel we owned the place.
Have diner 20km away (Taberna do Adro) and it was nice.

We were lucky enough to be in the suite and it was worth the extra cost. The suite is heavenly, the whole place breath taking and the host lovely. We had the best three days of our holiday there and only wished we'd booked our whole stay in Potugal there.

The view is indescribable and the place says relax in all its splendor. The suite is extraordinary, great area and has windows that make you feel like the room extends across the plain. The whole house is flawless decorated and the common room, being extremely welcoming, allows to enjoy the outside dam landscape.
Exceptional reception by Sr. João. and D. Isabel and quite reasonable breakfast.
Extra points for: the proximity of water, the Balinese beds and kayaks available. Oh, and the sunset on varada and the sunrise in the suite :)

We arrived at Casa da Ermida late evening after a long journey from Valencia to be greeted by the charming Joao and Isabel.Such a warm welcome to a beautiful home in a beautiful setting.A large log fire was so inviting in the large comfortable lounge and when shown to our rooms it was just a delight. Our son booked as a surprise on our travels through Europe and what a truly magical surprise it was. We were in the suite, it was amazing with the large windows and stunning views which we awoke to as well as the sun rise.In the morning we were spoilt with a delicious breakfast by Isabel and a roaring log fire by Joao. The house is fascinating and tastefully decorated so many fascinating things to look at. After a walk to the church admiring the views we sadly had to leave
A visit to remember.
