Good for walkers

The hotel, a former convent, is situated near the upper ramparts of the old fortified city. It’s not the easiest to find among the maze of narrow streets, especially as the name is in small letters.
Rooms are arranged around the cloister garden. We particularly liked the warm pool in the spa — you have to reserve a time - in preference to the chilly October temperatures in the outer pool.
Our suite was super comfortable, featuring all the usual facilities and lacking only a kettle. The tepid water in the shower before breakfast was an unwelcome surprise. It was the only hotel of four we visited that permitted breakfast guests to use the same tongs. As a Covid precaution, the others either served guests the courses they indicated or allocated separate tongs to each table.
Parking can be difficult. Best is to use the hotel carpark on the far side of the hotel. Beware of parking signs that limit users to particular functions or hours.
The hotel is an ideal base for exploring the old city, beginning with the spectacular ramparts. Bear in mind that many facilities are closed on Mondays and some on Tuesday mornings.
We enjoyed our brief stay and would gladly return.

This is a beautiful hotel in an elegant old building. Set within the fortress of old Elvas it is reached through narrow cobbled streets and the underground parking is a bonus. Tastefully refurbished there is little to fault. So far so good.
The check-in is slow. Only two desks and if busy they struggle to process the guests. The complicated layout of the hotel means the reception staff guide you to the corridor. This slows check-in considerably.
During our one night stay the air conditioning unit started to leak water at 3am. We placed buckets and towels to save the carpet and switched it off. The drip, drip continued for a period. This was reported to reception who were most apologetic.
An excellent breakfast over we checked out. Having prepaid there was only €7 to pay for drinks. Despite having to ask for this charge to be waived the receptionist would not budge. We thought that some small gesture in recognising our inconvenience would be offered. The receptionist did not budge!
We ate out at a restaurant called Acontece which was recommended by fellow travellers. It did not disappoint.

Very enjoyable stay in Elvas, hotel is located in a renovated building that served among others as army barracks. Very customer oriented reception staff and well attended to our needs. Rooms are of good size, however the mattresses seem a bit on the cheap side. Hotel has inside and outside pools, spa and massage services. There is plenty of parking areas near the hotel and the indoor parking is well priced at 7.5 euros. The central atrium is quite enjoyable. buffet breakfast is of good value.

Long wait to check in as insufficient staff on reception. Staff seem dispirited and disinterested On day 2, room had not been cleaned by 4.30. In Bar, juice was out of stock for their signature cocktail. Instructions to enter hotel car park are incorrect. Any hotel info has to be accessed by a very non user friendly app. Final straw was learning that only one free coffee pod per person is included. After that you have to pay extra.
Very disappointed overall with the level of customer service although the beds are comfortable and room relatively well cleaned. Perhaps the 4 stars relate to its facilities but that is not an excuse to be lazy on customer care.

The space itself is very lovely, is an old palace restored. The experience was simply terrible. First the bedroom was not ready, we actually went to lunch to give a little more time but after 2:30 hours the room was still not ready and we had to wait in the lobby for another 20/30 minutes. They said the system was down but they were making check-ins in a not working system??? weird I would say. There was a time where there was 3 groups of guests and more or less 5/6 employees in a very small reception. The treatment was different for all 3 groups and different excuses were given. The pool space was very small which was not the problem however was full, no one was updating the occupation flag (due to covid restrictions) and they even said that they put the red flag without filling the space (again not a big deal) and for us to look if we have space and so to enter and enjoy the pool… Like, what? should I or not respect the flag while there's a pandemic ongoing and you say to me the pool is full??? The telephone system was constantly not working, we have called to room service and spa and none of the situations worked normal. We called the room service and somehow redirected to the reception, the reception called the room service and no-one answered, after a few minutes they called and there was some interference in the call so they came to the room, when they arrived they pretty much found no alternative for gluten allergic guest (they have gluten free bread frozen however is just for the breakfast) perhaps is too much to ask to unfroze 1 or 2 breads so we can have at least a kind of normal meal, at the end only the soup was available. The majority of the staff that we asked didn’t knew anything about food alergies or even which kind of elergies their food have in room service which is potentially hazerd to someone. The hotel is not a good place to be when is almost full, so avoid specially in high season otherwise you'll find a lot of people everywehere. Is a shame because the bedroom and bed was really good. Perhaps was just bad luck of mine however for an hotel like this they should make sure the experience they provide and the service are both exceptional.

Renovated property but service and standards need a lot of improvement. Clearly suffering from post Covid staff shortages, rooms not cleaned until late afternoon/early evening. Front desk staff helpful but waiting staff surly, service slow and inefficient. Food choice is limited and not what you’d expect of a 4 star. is breakfast coffee undrinkable. Drinking water in bedrooms only supplied for first night and not replenished daily. Had to change room as first room was dark and had only one window - bathroom tiny. No soap or body lotion for the five days and tissues not replenished.

This hotel is part of a system of historic buildings throughout Portugal that have been remodeled into very nice ( 5-Star) accommodations. They are called Pousada and are in many of the old villages/towns--great for travelers. This former convent has a beautiful pool, meeting rooms, bar area, exquisite dining room, court yard, and breakfast room. The breakfast is included and was very good. The rooms are very well appointed, have a variety of views, have AC and are quiet. The hotel is located right in the old part of town so you can easily walk around and experience the feel of going back in history.

The hotel is located in a beautiful old building with great quality renovation. Our family room 302 was udge but the bathroom was small in comparison. The two pools are not too much during summer because some persons seem to stay there most of the day. Gym opens from 7 am to 10 pm. Pools open from 9 am to 8 pm. Please note that gym, hamman, sauna and jacuzzi are forbidden to kids under 16. There are plenty of free parking places nearby but you may want to pay for the indoor covered parking. Service was consistent with what you should expect from such hotel. The Air Conditioning was very powerful and worked well.

One thing everyone does in a hotel in sleep, so it needs to be a bit of a priority. Unfortunately, there was a loud pump (something to do with the air conditioning) that made a loud noise every five minutes, all night long.
In the morning I told the hotel there was a problem with the AC. The woman at reception barely apologised and then said it's not a problem, it's the system they have. So they know about this noise and they do nothing about it. If they have to use such a pump, it would be much better to having it running constantly at a low level than to have a loud noise every few minutes all night long. It's like a sort of Chinese water torture!
One of the people at reception in the morning wanted to get a manager to help resolve the situation, but the other didn't and so they no made effort to resolve anything.
Also the only restaurant option was a buffet dinner, and the food was not amazing. If you order a la carte, you just get a part of the buffet food!
One other thing.. we didn't get a double bed as requested, we got two single beds put together, each dressed individually.
It is a nice building thought, if you don't mind a terrible night's sleep!

Recently stayed 3 nights at Vila Gale Elvas. This was our second time at the hotel. Celebrating our anniversary the hotel had left a nice bottle of local wine and cake in our room. This time we stayed in a higher room floor with fantastic views over the countryside towards Spain. Room was large, modern and clean. Nice pool area and always able to get a sun bed. Buffet breakfast was excellent with a good choice. The hotel is in a fantastic building and spotlessly clean. Thanks to all the friendly and helpful staff for our enjoyable stay.
