Hotel Not Hotel is a place in the centre of Amsterdam where a room isn't just a room, but a work of art with its own creator, story, and identity. Most of them designed and specially made by Collaboration-O, a group of young designers that originated from the Eindhoven Design Academy, and one by Arno Coenen and his partner IRIS.When you wake up, you step into an art-filled, exhibition-like space instead of an anonymous lobby or hallway. The entire hotel is one big living room, with cosy seating areas between the cottages. Combined with our luxury beds and other facilities, Hotel Not Hotel offers an unrivalled experience.. Besides all this, we feel that the value of a city lies in experiencing its local day-to-day life. As we are closely connected to Amsterdam and its numerous creative entrepreneurs, we know where to send you for a night on the town, a hidden culinary gem, or an upcoming artist's exhibition. The hotel can also be the perfect background for your own event, and we take group reservations, giving you the opportunity to have the hotel all to yourself. The bar connected to Hotel Not Hotel is called Kevin Bacon. Just like the actor, the bar has zero pretention, it always delivers, and it makes sure everybody has a good time. Kevin Bacon is not your typical hotel bar. It's where locals get their morning coffee or a quick breakfast. It's where friends meet for a cocktail or a beer before diving into the nightlife, and where hotel guests let their hair down after a long day in the city.

TLDR: quirky hostel/hotel, that may need some maintenance (and maybe electronical locks)

We booked Hotel Not Hotel because our friend has visited this hotel and loves this. We didn’t tell our kids anything about this hotel and they (10 and 12 yos) were amused. They consider this hotel as a highlight of our stay in Amsterdam.

We had Small Bookcase, Tram and Crisis Free Zone. We knew before our visit that bathrooms are shared (it reads on their site…). From these the Tram was our favourite even though it’s in the middle of everything. This is hostel-ish, but clientele is not so much party crowd, mainly families and couples. The tram is bigger than smallest Bookcase or the Crisis Free Zone. CFZ is tall and easy to breath, but it’s basically open from the upper decoration. Bookcase was a must for bookworms, but wouldn’t book a upstairs room for hot season anymore. Rooms are small and the suitcase storage is suitable for cabin sized bags. The Tram has room for bigger ones, too.

So it was hot in Amsterdam during our stay and the hotel was HOT, too. I guess this is a bit Dutch thing… they seem to be ok with houses hot during the summer and cold during the winter. We’re more into same degrees inside whatever the season is. Other cultural thing is that to us it seemed that the rooms should be cleaned (yearly cleaning style) and maybe some renovation done. But that kind of resembles Amsterdam housing situation in all.

We didn’t bought breakfast from the hotel, there are some nice Coffee Roasterys (that’s the name!) nearby. Found also laundromat and used that. We traveled with trams, as a family of four we bought group day ticket for 17,50€.

Service was ok/nice. Although it was weird that we found keys… someone had forgot theirs, that’s normal, but found one from our room, too. And after we’d left they called and asked where we had left our keys. Erm, we gave it to you when checking out? That was awkward tp kind of having to tell them we didn’t steal their keys. BUT Dutch service can sometimes be a bit straightforward, so didn’t take it personally.

Overall, a bit mixed feelings, but the price was cheap for Amsterdam and the kids were like OMG-OMG and are telling about this hotel for everyone.

I stayed in the Poison Ivy room and found that the size of the room was fine plus having an attached, private bathroom was very convenient. The bed was comfortable and the sheets clean.

The price is a little high for what it is and the location is quite far from the centre of Amsterdam, but it is not abnormally high compared to other options in the area. A minor downside was the bathroom sink was extremely small and made it difficult to not make a mess whenever using it. A major problem for me was that the room had NO airflow at all, meaning the air would be unbearably stuffy within a short time of closing the door to the room.

The location is fantastic. There are lovely cafes nearby and it's very close to a tram stop and a great park.

The bathroom was clean and the shower was quite modern too. Even though our room was right next to the common areas, it was only slightly noisy until 11-12. Another pro was that the mattress was very comfortable!

The younger staff at the reception were not quite as friendly compared to the older staff but we enjoyed our stay. I was really worried about finding bed bugs but I checked and didn't find any, although the sides of the bed were quite dusty including the fan (warning: the room is very warm and there isn't great ventilation). There's also no room to put out your luggage as the room can only fit a bed. I recommend bringing a spare bag to keep your clothes off the floor!

Also, sometimes locking and unlocking the door was a struggle because the fake leaves jammed the door!

Book at your own risk. **There is a BED BUG ISSUE!!! I have contacted the hotel and am awaiting their response.

The concept is unique - multiple themed rooms, some with private bathrooms, and most with a shared bathroom.

Keep in mind that the shared bathroom is on the main floor, by the restaurant's seating area. Our room (Secret Bookcase 27) was the furthest and was also upstairs. It's a bit awkward to get out of the shower while there are people drinking and dining.

The shared bathroom has a few stalls with showers, and all of them have a huge squeegee hanging on the wall. Why? Cause the floor isn't sloped so the water doesn't drain properly. You have to use the squeegee in order to force the water to go to the drain.

Room 27 had great windows, but you're not able to open them. There is no ventilation system in the room, so we were forced to keep our door open just to have some air circulating. There is a panel by the door that says "fan." **However**, it doesn't work. We even asked two front desk staff, and they also didn't know how to fix it or turn it on. Also, there was no other solution presented by the staff.

Pros: good location. Only a 5-minute walk to the 17 tram that will take you all the way to Centraal Station.
Kevin Bacon bar downstairs makes good drinks, and the servers are great. Thai food is good too, but portions are small.

I booked the Poison Ivy room at Hotel Not Hotel Amsterdam, enticed by the beautiful room images online. Unfortunately, the room I received was markedly different and less comfortable than advertised. It seems there are two Poison Ivy rooms, but the hotel only shows the more attractive one online, misleading guests like myself.

Additionally, during check-in, I was required to leave a €50 deposit, which I was told would be refunded after my stay. Three days have passed since the promised refund time, and I have yet to receive it. This delay and lack of communication have added to my dissatisfaction.

Furthermore, during my stay, I noticed an unsettling practice regarding room cleanliness. While changing sheets, the staff placed them on the floor, which compromised hygiene standards. For a hotel that prides itself on uniqueness and comfort, such oversight in maintaining cleanliness is disappointing and concerning.

0 COMFORT!! There was no hot water in the sinks, the bathrooms did not have a rug and it flooded with water so you had to get dressed in the wet afterwards, sometimes there was a lack of toilet paper and soap in the toilets. BEWARE they charge you 11 euros in Tax when you arrive at reception and 50 euros!!! in deposit for the key!! Which we have not yet received back because the system was down, so we had to leave without the money. Bring flip flops, as it will be very uncomfortable for you to move from your room to the bathroom in street shoes and when leaving the bathroom. Our room was missing bathroom products, but when we asked for them at reception they gave it to us.

I was excited to check into this hotel only to be told on arrival that my booking was cancelled over a month earlier and given to someone else who paid more, all this without telling me and also keeping my money all that time!

This was all blamed on the "system" with no reasoning as to why given.

The young receptionists had zero empathy for this situation and coldly stated they could just give me my money back now..how kind.

The manager on site would also not provide her name or her supervisors name to me.

All of this resulted in me having to book more expensive accommodation last minute in a far less suitable location. I have never been treated as coldly or poor at any accomodation in my life and i have been around the world from 0star to 5star locations. DO NOT RECOMMEND

Not my favorite experience. I stayed in the Secret Bookcase L which has a shower and sink attached but no toilet. This was great to have as there is only one communal bathroom that is on the ground floor next to the bar. The room itself was very tiny with no places to put anything. There seriously needs to be more shelves especially around the sink. My room was also rather dirty along with a shower that didn’t drain properly and full of someone else’s hair which wasn’t ideal. Additionally having a physical key to carry around was cumbersome and annoying. Another note of caution is that there is a ton of construction going on around the roads in front of the hotel. Therefore Witte de Withstraat tram stop is closed meaning if you want to take the tram anywhere you must walk 8-10 minutes up to the Admiral de Ruijterweg stop which extremely inconvenient.

On top of the outlined issues, we discovered that the lock and key to my room was messed up. The key was able to open every single room in the hotel. The manager remedied the problem and said that no one else had the same key but the staff, however I still felt very uncomfortable and unsafe with the idea that a guest could potentially have a master key. Overall, the situation was handled well but zero compensation was offered. Will be sticking to my Marriott and Hilton hotels from now on.

We are writing this review to express our disappointment with our recent experience at Hotel not Hotel in Amsterdam (Jan 2023). We had booked a room with the hotel for two nights based on the pictures displayed on booking.com, but unfortunately the actual state of the room was completely different and unacceptable. The room was filled with accumulated dust, mold was growing around the shower, and it posed a risk to our health. To make matters worse, the room had no window, which was horrible since we had the feeling of suffocating from the dust and mold smell.

Due to the disastrous condition of the room, we decided to cancel our second night and left the hotel earlier without a refund. The hotel failed to apologize for the poor state of the room and did not make any effort to rectify the situation. The hotel did offer us a free drink or breakfast, but this small gesture couldn't reverse the damage already done. The pictures we have attached clearly show that the pictures displayed on booking.com do not resemble the actual state of the accommodation.

In conclusion, we would not recommend this hotel to anyone. The lack of attention to cleanliness and maintenance, combined with the hotel's unprofessional attitude and misleading information on booking.com, make it a poor choice for anyone looking for a comfortable and safe place to stay in Amsterdam.

My partner and I had expected a quirky boutique hotel, but were unhappy with the "Crisis Free Zone" room, particularly the poor ventilation and poor air quality, which made the room we were meant to be staying in very stuffy. The ventilation system was noisy, poorly-installed and poorly-mounted in the eaves of the room so that it did not actually ventilate the space, and the only way to properly air out the room would have been either to keep a fan running the whole time, or to keep the door open, exposed to the entrance of the hotel. Even with the door closed we could hear everything outside of the room, and I imagine this would have continued through the night as the hotel includes a lively bar next to the communal bathroom facilities.

Additionally the communal bathrooms were not well-stocked, as there was no soap by the sinks and no toilet roll in the WC cubicle. We didn't stay long enough to check out the showers.

I would be very surprised if the designer of the "Crisis Free Zone" had actually stayed in their creation, as it did not feel fit for purpose.

What room is the Deluxe queen room?

Hi, I can’t recall the sky scrapers. The rooms are cleverly designed yet small. However this was not an issue for us as we spend most the time in the common areas exploring. A very cool experience which will be remembered far longer than your average hotel stay. Enjoy!

Tram would be the best way but depends on how much luggage you have otherwise Uber it to the hotel. Bike rental is relative to others however lot easier to pick it up from the Hotel plus they will provide some ideas and routes to you. Enjoyed the hotel and very good restaurant with decent prices for food. The other thing you need to be aware of is the rooms upstairs can be very small

How far are the communal bathrooms from Bookcase S? Is there a fan in the room?
Amsterdam, The Netherlands1 contribution
Hi! The bookcase S is tiny room hidden away behind a.. well, entire bookcase. There is a fan in the room and a little air vent, but don't forget about the massive doors. The bookcase S is located next to the staircase. Our staircase counts about 15 broad steps and makes you end up right in front of the communal bathrooms. Hope that helps and wish to meet you soon! Cheers, Hotel Not Hotel
