Stayed in Hotel the Crown for three nights (April 2nd - April 5th) 2012. Myself, my wife and two kids (daughter 14 and son 11). I have been to Amsterdam several times over the years but never with kids. So I was slightly worried that we were staying in a budget hotel in the Red Light and normally used by...

The Crown was a decent hotel all in all, felt more like a hostel however. Fine if you just want somewhere to crash out for a few hours before hitting the coffeeshops again or other amusements Amsterdam has to offer. The location is brilliant with coffeeshops and the Red Light District all virtually on the doorstep. The station is a...

After booking the Crown Hotel for my son I received confirmation that 333 Euros would be deducted from the card that I had provided and a single room was now reserved from the 28th March. On arrival at the Crown on the 28th he was then told he was expected to pay 333 Euros in cash for his stay because...

Its basic, close to all the ameneties, and about a five minute walk from Centraal Station, oh, and its in the Red Light District (for the atmosphere and not the ladies!!) but in a very quiet part - excellent. They also have a very large friendly cat called Guinness who enjoyed sitting with us and seemed to be a very...

Very clean, fantastic location, friendly members of staff and a bar cat! The temp outside must have been -8c and below, the canals were frozen solid and beautiful. The Hotel Rooms were so warm and cosy just what we needed out of the cold. The rooms that me and my friends stayed in (rooms one and two) were both very...

If you are looking a budget place with a good location, Crown is definetly it. Only minuses are that no wireless lan, toilet and shower might be on a another floor, no sink at the toilet to wash hands and stairs are narrow and steep. But considering that this is a budget choice, all these are not too bad at...

Popped in there just passing buy. We know A'Dam very well and so we knew what to expect. We were given a good rate, a quire nice room with a stunning view on Oudezijds Voorburgwal which was superb. Room was very cold though and had a shared bathroom (not too bad as only 2 rooms on top floor). We booked...

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
