The best thing about Hotel Hortus is the location. 15 minutes walk from the Amsterdam Central and with easy access to all main attractions. Botanical Garden is around the corner, ZOO is 3-4 minutes away while Dam Square and Red Light District are 10 minutes away. Area is very quiet and safe. Our room was on top floor and stairs... More

5 people room was basic but comfortable. Friendly and helpful staff. Bathroom and toilets were quite clean. Senior travelers might find very difficult to climb the steep stairs.

Room was too small for my liking but may be thats what you would get for 47 euros. Stay only if you are a budger traveler. The reception guys were nice though. Breakfast was quite basic. No frills hostel basically.

I had a slightly higher expectation based on reviews than what I encountered. We spent a long weeking in Amsterdam with my friend and the location (1 km to center) was the main reason for selecting this hotel. We travelled with a friend and paid only 190€ (combined) for 4 nights. I've stayed in some 20 hotels and hostels from... More

This place was so easy to find and an easy tram ride from the Amsterdam Centrale on Tram 9 brought you basically to the front door. The zoo is a short walk from the hotel and there are a few coffee shops close by. You can smoke in the rooms which was a plus when you are Amsterdam :)

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighbourhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
