Hotel Van de Vijsel's prime location is frequently lauded by guests for its convenience to central Amsterdam and local attractions. While the rooms earn compliments for their cleanliness and coziness, some guests have noted they are on the smaller side and could benefit from better soundproofing and more storage. The service at the hotel garners high praise for the staff's friendliness and helpfulness.
Travelers are divided on the value, with some finding it reasonable and others pointing out additional costs. Opinions on noise levels vary, though many enjoy the hotel's cozy atmosphere.

Hotel's Favourite
We spent 5 nights here 2 at the start of our trip ( 3 weeks in Italy & France) and 3 nights at the end and we loved it. First, the staff! What a great staff, all of which were so helpful and friendly but especially Fatima who helped us with some special request including holding a bag for us until we returned at the end of our trip. Fatima was always so friendly greeting us as we came and went and it was her and her coworkers that we decided to return. The next best part of the hotel is the location, it's in a quite area but so close to train and bus stations that you can get anywhere in the city within 10-15 minutes on the tram. There are a few local restaurants and bars on the same street as the hotel or you can take less than a 5 minute walk and you have tons of options and a very lively area with people around late into the night. The hotel had a great modern vibe and the bar had great morning coffee. As for the room we had 2 different experiences, both good but here's the breakdown: Our 1st room was a standard double and was pretty small basically the bed, a small table and a nice size bathroom but no mini bar and coming across a cold dink in Amsterdam can be a challenge. The bed was comfortable and the shower was nice with a large rainfall style shower head. The second room we had was a comfort double witch was bigger but the bed in this room was not that great, it was memory foam pad on top of some box springs and was very hot even in the cold evenings I was trying to find ways to cool off. I would give it a 10/10 but I have to knock down a point for the last bed being so uncomfortable and lack of a mini bar. We have a direct flight from our home airport to Amsterdam and this will be our hotel of choice every time we stay over in Amsterdam.

**Dear Ripcitykj,** Thank you for your wonderful review! We’re thrilled to hear that your stay with us bookended such a memorable trip through Italy and France. It’s fantastic to know our location and team, especially Fatima, made such a positive impact on your stay. We’ll be sure to pass along your kind words to her and the entire team. We’re glad you enjoyed the modern feel of our hotel, the convenience of nearby transport, and the surrounding dining options. Your experience with both room types is valuable feedback, and we’ll take your note on the comfort of the second bed and the mini bar into consideration for future improvements. Thank you again for choosing us as your go-to hotel in Amsterdam. We look forward to welcoming you back on your next stay! Warm regards,

We booked 2 x twin rooms as a family of 4 looking to enjoy a weekend in Amsterdam. We got an excellent rate so I wasn’t sure what to expect. We were pleased for the price we paid. Rooms were pretty small, however they were adjoining as requested, and handily practically interconnecting by using the balcony doors. The beds were super comfy, all 4 of us commented on this. The rooms were very dark and it was lovely and quiet. The bathrooms seem to be pretty new, spotlessly clean and the shower is spot on (the lower shower head has several setting including power shower). There was tea & coffee pods, a hairdryer and a few bathroom extras like shampoo, shower gel, cotton wool etc.
We had food delivered to the hotel as we were so shattered from a day exploring. This was no problem with reception who called us when it arrived. Wifi was excellent (a godsend for 2 tired kids) and plenty of shops on the doorstep to grab a bottle of wine for us.
The next day we found breakfast at the Spar round the corner and then walked 10 mins to the Van Gogh and Moco museums. That area is delightful, a nice park and the Rijksmuseum over the road. Overall, I would recommend if you get a good price.

Initially, my boyfriend and I had booked this hotel for one night only, with the plan to explore other hotels during our stay in Amsterdam. The moment we arrived at this hotel we were greeted with lovely staff and the ambience of the hotel felt so comforting yet so luxury. When checking into our room, we were given the choice of having a room with both a bath and a shower- which we obviously could not refuse! When entering our room we were overjoyed with the room size, as it even had its own corridor leading up to our bedroom! The bathroom was amazing and had heated floor as soon as we entered, which just added to the overall feeling of luxury! We had breakfast delivered to our door (due to COVID), we were satisfied and were told if wanted more, we had the choice to grab extras downstairs. The shower and bath were incredible and very spacicious. As well as this, the room was clean and had one of the comfiest beds imaginable, making it very hard to leave when we had to check out the following day! We were sad to say goodbye and vowed that we would return again.....little did we know we would return the same day....After having a disastrous experience with our second hotel planned, my partner and I saw the only possible solution - to book the remaining of the holiday here again!! It was a no brainer, and we were so happy with how accomodating the hotel was to our needs and how welcoming they were. All our needs were catered for and the location of the hotel made everything in walking distance and easily accessible. We were also given a free bar drinking due to booking through the website, this made our stay feel extra special. We really loved our time here and we are so excited to return again. When we weren't in the hotel, we were sat talking about the hotel and all its greatness! Definitely would recommend, especially if like us, it is your first time in Amsterdam!

Upon arriving at this hotel I thought I had made a mistake and booked my family into a hostel! There were people sleeping in the reception area and looking very untidy. The artwork on the walls then made me think I was in the red light district as they were very erotic and adult themed. Fortunately my children are adults so we were able to laugh about it. Not sure I would have been happy for them to see these pictures if they were children. I do get it’s Amsterdam and we need to be open minded but this still didn’t sit comfortable with me.
The room has a bed (very large and comfortable) and a rod hanging from a chain which, is in fact your wardrobe! There is no chair to sit in your room and the lighting is awful. There is a spotlight with a bulb painted black!!!!
The bathroom in contrast is extremely good. The shower is fantastic, strong rainfall shower in a large glass cubicle. There is a cool light underneath the toilet which is great for the middle of the night and the underfloor heating is also a nice touch. The first morning we tried the breakfast . The lady serving was clearly on her first ever shift and was alone. She had no idea what she was doing or where anything was kept. Her English wasn’t great which didn’t help. The breakfast was Luke warm and when we mentioned the bacon had run out she just looked confused. On day two there was another new member of staff who once again was lost! We ordered breakfast off the menu. When it arrived she gave one of our breakfasts to another guest. The breakfast given to us was omelette sitting in oil on a cold plate. It was awful. There were three of us who had ordered omelette and they were all in the same inedible condition. We did not eat here again.
The location of the hotel is very central to the museums and attractions.
If I visited again I would go to the Marriott around the corner.

Responded 23 Feb 2020
Dear Barbara, First and foremost I would like to thank you for staying at Hotel van de Vijsel and for taking the time to write a review of your stay. As we are quite a new hotel, we are always looking for ways to improve our guest satisfaction so that we can continue to exceed expectations. I am glad you enjoyed our location, comfort and our bathroom facilities. I am also a great fan of our floor heating technology. But more importantly, I regret hearing our design did not quite meet your expectations. Hotel van de Vijsel is a boutique hotel, meaning we have chosen for a unique style for both our design and art choices. An example of our design choices is the clothing hangers from the ceiling and our darkened light bulbs and an example of our art is indeed the photography collection alongside the wall of the ground floor. We do our best by displaying this unique style by the means of pictures on our website. Furthermore, I would also like to apologize for the experienced inconveniences regarding our breakfast. The experience you mentioned is not one we would like our guests to have. Were you able to discuss this matter with my colleagues at the front desk? These matters will usually be resolved on the spot, as we strive for all our guests to leave satisfied. Once again I would like to thank you for your feedback. We enjoyed having you as our guest and we value your opinion. If you would like to provide us with any additional feedback or if you would like to give Hotel van de Vijsel a second chance, we would love to get in touch. Warm regards, Sjoerd Hotel van de Vijsel

Staff members were among the nicest in my staying in varies hotels in Europe. Then again I find the resident in Netherlands among the kindest in Europe.
This is boutique, the room for a simplified double was the compact (shoebox think Japan). A good place to rest your head. No closet or luggage rack. Bath amenities made locally, room is clean, and seems to aim at being sustainable and bathroom is pretty decent sized. The room was a bit cold but the blanket was rated 7/10 soft and kept me warm; a rarity. Location seems rather safe, tram is within walking distance of about 3 blocks, 15 minutes to city center, it is off from busy but a main shopping area is about 5 blocks away. Designer shops and Vodal Park were other direction towards museums square was a 10 minutes walk, casino 5 minutes. If you want to see where locals hang, walk on Overtoom, left when you head out the door. They have this cozy restaurant onsite. There is 3 supermarket close by, saving grace for fruits and water. And lastly I recommend taking the Connexion bus to airport, it was bat out of hell trying to know where it stopped, so fyi in front of Asics. Bad, I had requested for a higher floor room and quiet; I got a lower floor room, facing the main street and the wall was very thin; the guests upstairs were loud talkers, heavy footed and late sleepers. The street noise dies down by 11pm. <I am very sensitive to noise and bring ear plugs and try very hard to reach out ahead of arrival to be place in the quietest room possible. I wish hotel staff would understand that light sleepers appreciate that gesture. >

Spent 3 nights here. Easy to get to as a short walk from tram stop. Room was modern and clean. Bed comfortable and shower is amazing (under floor heating too). The staff are friendly. I had breakfast one morning - good choice and you can also order eggs and/or pancakes in addition. Location is easy reach of Anne Frank and van Gogh museum.I was attending a concert at the Paradiso and this is a short walk from the venue. Only thing stopping it from 5star review is a felt the room lighting to be a bit dull. Couple of wall mounted lights never really brightened the place up.

+1
The room we had was a double room, the bed was quite large and very very comfortable, the curtains made it nice and dark at night so I got a peaceful sleep. The design of the room was very nice, even down to the smell of the wood it just felt homely.
The staff here made it extra special for my partners birthday by having a bouquet of flowers in the room which I requested, but they also went the extra mile with balloons and also a free drink voucher for her which was amazing!
Knowing that we had to use our key card to get into the hotel was great because of the extra
security coming back late at night. Room was fresh and got cleaned every day and the cleaners always greeted us when we were in the hotel. The staff are absolutely amazing here, they are very helpful and were always on hand to help. Even the language barrier was no trouble at all as they were all very fluent with English.
I would definitely recommend this hotel for couples and I would definitely come back again.

As my first trip to Amsterdam, I wanted a boutique hotel that was in the center of it all. Hotel Van De Vijsel was the perfect choice - not only are the rooms stylish and inviting, the location of the hotel is fantastic! I was minutes away from all the best restaurants, neighborhoods and attractions. Their team was so accommodating when I requested to relocate into another room category as well when my friends opted to book their own room. I would absolutely stay here again and will recommend it to all my American visitors! Shoutout to the Front Desk staff who answered all my questions about mask requirements, the drinking water, etc. It was a joy talking to them every time.

My friend and I enjoyed a pleasant 3 night stay here. We chose the hotel as it was just outside of the main part of Amsterdam (but still within a comfortable walking distance to the main attractions of the city) and in a quiet location.
Things we liked about the hotel:
* the location - it's only a 10 minute walk to the Rijksmuseum and a 20 minute walk to the Anne Frank Haus. If walking is an issue there are plenty of team stops nearby which are fantastic value.
* the staff are incredibly courteous and polite and a real credit to the hotel. They all speak superb English too.
* the bedroom are very comfortable and perfectly suited for 2 people sharing.
* the wooden decor (which represents the building's history as a timber yard) is very chic. The slightly raunchy pictures on the walls perhaps show that the hotel is more suited to younger people without children, rather than families.
Things we didn't like about the hotel:
* the sound proofing between the rooms isnt great and you will need a pair of earplugs if you're a light sleeper.
* the wifi is very sporadic and unreliable.
I would definitely stay in this hotel again, and we throughly enjoyed our stay in the beautiful city of Amsterdam.

We arrived on the 21st of January 2023 for 3 nights, very early in the morning, although check in was not until 1500hrs, we were able to leave our cases at the hotel and go for a look around the city, when we returned at 1400hrs, the room was ready and the cases had already been taken to the room.
The staff are incredible and are very polite. Breakfast in the morning included a buffet with eggs, bacon and sausages and a lot of bakery items. Including an amazing coffee machine. You could also order an omelette , waffles and a Dutch pancake.
The room wasn’t huge but perfect size, which opened up on to a balcony, we had a twin room and was very modern. The only suggestion I would say is that we needed a little more lighting in the nights to do make up, other than that it was perfect and very clean and tidy.
The hotel is perfectly situated, with a tram stop right outside the hotel. We were able to walk every where and if we needed to go further we would get a tram, which is only 9 euros a day for all transport, using the gvb app. Can I also mention, that two girls travelling on their own, we felt very safe, with the doors being locked at 11pm and only being able to access the hotel with the room key.
Also, if you are looking for a bar with great street food, right opposite the hotel, Bar Kartel is amazing!!
I will be recommending the hotel to family and friends
And if you go you need to order the dutch pancake with syrup!!
