Perched on a meander in the Amstel, the Omval area that Ruby Emma calls home was for decades the powerhouse of Amsterdam. The gas supplied from the Zuidergasfabriek helped light and heat the city. These days, the newly formed Amstelkwartier is a more idyllic spot, but the focus on energy remains. Taking our lead from the mariners who tacked their sails to harness the wind on the river’s tight turns, Emma’s all about using the power of nature. From the thermal aquifer that stores our hot water to the building’s smart façade that reacts to the elements to heat and cool the hotel, green energy runs through Emma’s veins. Inside, the rooms all feature our Lean Luxury touches, including a big, comfy bed, aromatherapy Ruby Care products, and soft, fluffy towels, along with a Marshall amp to add some oomph to your audio.

The Ruby Emma Hotel & Bar, set in a quieter suburb yet a stone's throw from central Amsterdam via metro, is praised for its modern and stylish atmosphere. Guests appreciate the high-tech touches, like in-room iPads, although some find these features daunting. While the rooms earn compliments for comfort and cleanliness, housekeeping sometimes falls short.
Opinions on service swing from helpful to slow or impolite. Travelers criticize the hotel's value, pointing out overpriced elements and hidden charges, despite enjoying the contemporary amenities.

This hotel was amazing! Location was perfect for getting into the centre, the station was about a 3 minute walk and then 1 straight metro which took about 15 mins. The rooms were perfectly furnished and had a very modern / luxurious aesthetic to them. The bed was MASSIVE and very comfortable and the lights really made the room feel cosy. The shower was incredible, not only was it huge there was also a variety of soaps, shampoos and conditioners. Our room had 2 big mirrors which I loved and they also had a tea and coffee station in the corridors where you can help yourself to a drink. There was also an ironing board by the drinks station, which i thought was really handy as many hotels charge for this service and sometimes you do need to iron your clothes from being rolled up in your suitcase. There was also a panel that closed from the outside which meant the room was completely pitch black at night time which was perfect! Staff were very friendly and smiley and the check in / out process was very straight forward. The only con I have is that the rooftop bar has a strict dress code which meant me and my boyfriend were unable to relax and have a drink whilst enjoying the view as we only packed comfy and warm clothes. We packed into a backpack and came with clothes ready for the cold e.g jumpers, tracksuits, leggings so we didn’t have any smart attire. I believe this should be relaxed a bit especially for the bar as many people like us are more than likely going to pack light and warm coming in March. Other than that I cannot fault this hotel one bit and I highly recommend anyone to stay there if your planning a trip to amsterdam! We will definitely be returning :)

Myself and wife just returned from a long weekend at the Ruby hotel. We had a great 3 nights there, the hotel was modern, clean and very relaxed. Staff were amazing, couldn’t do enough for us.
If you don’t need your room cleaned everyday they offer you 2 free drinks at the bar, they call that the green option.
We opted for a loft room, which was fantastic, complete black out when you close the electric outside shutters, best sleep we have had since having kids!!! There is a fridge in the room which was handy.
The hotel is 2 mins away from the metro station which is 10 mins away from central station so no need to use taxi’s just tap in and out.
There is a separate restaurant and bar at the top of the hotel, which isn’t part of the hotel, unfortunately for us it was fully booked for the duration of our stay. Worth booking in advance.
Bar food was a little limited, it’s more snack food than a meal, however there is a McDonald’s next door if you feel peckish. There are a couple of restaurants on the banks of the Amstel, which is 5 mins walk away.
I would certainly recommend this hotel. I wouldn’t worry it looks to be out of the city.

If you want a really modern European experience, as well as great value, this hotel is right up there. Everything was spotless, and so up to date, with iPad controlled lighting etc in the room, simple funky decor and friendly helpful staff. Little details, like fruit infused water available for no charge at reception, and a choice of shower gels also made the difference. The bed was huge and so comfortable. And we really enjoyed the continental breakfast with a great selection of cold meats and cheeses, eggs, breads, pastries and fruit juices with ice available. Location wise we were just minutes away from a tram stop which would either take us to Centraal station, or the Ajax stadium in just a few stops. There is a McDonalds right across the street, and a mini supermarket around the corner. We had booked it as it seemed so much better value than other places accessible to the centre of Amsterdam, and we just kept saying how lucky we got. Very highly recommend

Numerous couples came and stayed here to enjoy my husbands 40th birthday in Amsterdam the hotel was everything we needed and more hence my review (never usually do them) This is a modern hotel everything is done by an I Pad check in, lights in room, window blinds, air con etc it’s fantastic it’s so easy you don’t need to be a pro. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are beautiful we stayed in a cosy room, lots of space and a big comfy bed with big pillows we had a fantastic sleep whilst here. The windows have blackout blinds which is also a massive bonus as no sun coming through the curtains. It’s also very quiet due to sound proofing. The shower is also huge and warm a great extra to the room. The hotel is very clean as are the rooms. The hotel is located 4-5 minute walk from the metro (5 stops into centre) we were coming back at 12pm-1pm and felt very safe in the area. McDonalds over the road and a lovely shop which sells fresh items. I don’t really like lifts and had seen a review about not being able to use stairs as they were for an emergency only. I used the stairs everyday and didn’t get in the lift once the doors from the stairs were open. DO NOT GET TAXIS THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF!! Thank you Ruby Emma we will be back….

We rarely fall in love with a hotel, but in this case it was love at first sight! Check in can be done independently, but there is no shortage of help from the very kind staff. Check out is not necessary, just leave the key card in a special container. It is a very technological hotel, once you get to the room you can manage practically everything from the tablet (however very very simple and intuitive); it is very large and the spaces are well managed, the very comfortable king size bed, the electric blinds and curtains allow it to be completely dark (which is not to be taken for granted). It is located outside the center, but there is a metro stop 300 meters away which makes it very convenient. What can I say, we will miss him!

Fantastic, modern, clean, stylish hotel. We would definitely stay here again. The bed was huge and so comfy, I loved the design of the rooms. The room was spotless and I loved the walk in shower room, and lovely products. There were also electric blackout blinds so we had a good sleep and felt well rested. The rooms are sound proofed so we had no disturbances. The location is so easy from central, just a few metro stops away, as it was so busy in the city centre I was glad we were a bit further away. The staff were lovely but it’s mostly a self check in and out. We had breakfast only one day, although a tasty selection of bread, cheese, meats, vegan food and muesli and yoghurt, we felt €24 pp was a little steep. However we really loved the bar and had a pizza and cocktails in the evening. The top floor bar is also a must!!

Glamorised travelodge. The room smells like wet dog as soon as you step in. The sheets and pillows smell like fart. We asked when the room would be cleaned and staff said 3pm-5pm but no one came until our 3rd day (we chose to have our room cleaned everyday). I accidentally left a chocolate stain on the bedding but even after the clean, the stain was still there which implies the sheets weren’t changed. Fridge didn’t work. Air conditioning works but is terrible. Not much storage. No privacy in the shower as a see through door. Decently sized room.

There’s not much to dislike about this hotel. Here are the positives:
1. Location - great easy access to central Amsterdam and just a few minutes walk from the Metro station. Even though our room overlooked the train attacks they were almost inaudible. Nice quiet area generally and a little convenience store down the road.
2. Tech - packed full of useful tech. There’s an iPad in room for light control and it will also close the shutters on the windows. So if you’re a light sleeper and hate light getting in there are shutters and curtains! The other really useful thing that I’ve not seen any where else are sensors which detect when you step out of bed in the night and turn a small mirror light on in the hall giving you enough light to see to walk to the toilet without disturbing the other guest/s. Also light comes on in toilet automatically.
3. Shower - lovely big shower with plenty of room on the shelf for toiletries. Rainfall and normal shower. Nice hot water too.
4. Comfort - Mattress and pillow very comfy and duvet “hugged” you. Guess comfort varies between guests but I wouldn’t say overly hard or soft mattress.
5. Staff - were friendly and helpful every time we spoke to them.
6. CHeck in - was simple. There was self check in but also a member of staff to help when we checked in in the afternoon.
7. Charging - usb points in wall by bed. Very useful as I forgot my adapter.
Negatives
1. Not really a big deal …. I know people have complained about the lack of privacy in the shower and my teenage daughter was concerned about this, but really, yes there is a screen between the room and shower / sink/changing area but it is very obscured plus a glass door to the shower cubicle so you can see a rough outline if someone stood behind it changing, but not any detail. Basically just look the other way if the other person is bothered - no biggie.
2. Not sure our air con was working but to be fair we never asked about it as I thought it was cool enough.
Would stay again.

We really enjoyed our stay at Ruby Emma. Wasn't sure what to think about check in after reading some reviews but there's really nothing to worry about. We had staff on the desk, although it's minimal and mostly self check in, if you're unsure then just ask a member of staff, they were all lovely and welcoming offering advice whenever we had questions. Room was nice, slight industrial feel with modern furniture, great shower & necessary amenities. There are ironing boards of some floors in a communal area with free tea & coffee there too. Location was good for us, just a few minutes walk to the station, you'll pass a small shop for drinks, croissant etc if needed and the train is tap in/contactless so really easy to get around. Just a few stops from the main station and you can also get off on 1 or 2 other earlier stops to take a different route in to musuems & other sites either walking or by tram. We hired bikes from the hotel on our last day and rode along the bike path down the river which was a nice break from the city.

This hotel has a different concept from other hotels. The TV, the exterior curtains and the lights are controlled by Ipad that is in the room, difficult for older people who do not understand well the use of Ipad. The room, the bed are good more the cleanliness of the room and the bed is a catastrophe... I arrived and came across the room chewing the chulé, I went to look at the bed and saw that the sheets had not been changed, had hair and was stained probably from the previous host, asked to change room and offered me a free drink for the inconvenience, when I went to drink they charged me for the drink (how so??? ) at last, I ended up paying. The place where you take a shower had hair, to see that it was not clean... the worst of all was when I used the hair dryer and 10 minutes later came a boy and a girl in my room and they were knocking on the door and complaining that I would be smoking (I neither smoke), actually was using the hair dryer...I really did not understand. That's because they put a hair dryer if you can't use it. Hotel is far from the centre of Amsterdam but it has metro very close and it is super more practical anyway I ⁇ 't stay again and do not recommend this hotel. The employees are not friendly but self-taught.

Agree about train to airport. Be careful of taxi. They will cheat you. I arrived late in the evening so decided to take a cab. I researched prices ahead of time and followed instructions to ask the airport taxi attendants outside about an estimate of cost. They waved me off and told me to ask the taxi driver. They rushed me into the cab as if there was a line. Cab driver never gave me a direct answer. He didn't use a meter and I kept asking what the cost was going to be. He pretended he didn't understand. I could see the tracking on google maps and on his dashboard, and he took these long routes that were even far off for the construction nearby. Charged me 80 euros. I was really upset. but it was my first time back in Amsterdam after many years and I was starting my vacation so I just let it go because I didn't want one a****** to color my whole experience negatively. Luckily, the hotel experience was amazing and the train is really easy to navigate.
If you refer to the train leaving from central station to Shiphol airport (or opposite from
Airport to Amsterdam Central) it costs around €6 and the trip lasts about 15 minutes
There are more places to choose from in the Amsterdam area.
