We booked "Sky Room XL", got room 340. The room itself is spacious, sofa was converted to sofa bed for the kid. It had two TV's, one in bedroom, one in main area. Few negatives here are that the windows were dirty. Eventhough the bathroom was spacious it missed few towel hangars to hang atleast 3 wet towels. Shower head was not tight, water was overflowing and shower head holder was defect. We went shortly to the family rooms, with a pool table with one broken cue. There are few things to get the kids entertained. The rooms are quite small. As we were alone at that time, it was okay.
We requested a half board, but dinner is not available on sundays. The breakfast was fine, nothing fancy, but basics and closes by 9:30. Also for dinner as well it closes early by 8:30pm, guess due to limited staff and covid situation. They should have kept the warmly eaten items like hash browns, bacon in warm containers because we always had it cold. The coffee machine offered everything you need. If you have a half-board, note that the dinner will only have one fixed menu a day. The day when we had our dinner they had a fish menu and as our stomach was upset, we asked if we could get any alternative. The chef was kind enough to provide another menu with chicken and a soup, which we really appreciate. And the food was very good. Just glanced the evening menu card which was not impressive for the price and is limited and was only available in french, which is bit odd as its marketed as a conference hotel.
Other positives are, they provided free travel card for the days you stay there, which is very useful to explore the city. You get a discounted ticket for Aquatis aquarium. All the staffs were nice and helpful. I will give 3.5 stars. If above things are fixed, we would come again.
1. Room: Very modern and spacious with all the facilities including a small safe. The bathroom was clean and nice the way we preferred. The downside was the ventilation in the room. The AC was blowing warm air despite it being a warm day and stopped working completely in the middle of the night which meant we had to open windows and listen to traffic noises on the motorway on the side.
2. Staff: The best part of the hotel. The lady who checked us in was extremely helpful and pleasant and greeted us with a smile every time we went to the reception. Explained things about the city and facilities and went through a proper check in.
3. Breakfast: Needs improvement especially if you're charging CHF22 per head for a full breakfast. The coffee was bland and my wife who's a vegan with gluten allergies didn't have options for breakfast apart from the fruit salads. Some fresh tomatoes and veg (not fried) with salad would have been better to make it inclusive.
4. Location: Fairly on outskirts of the city but we didn't mind as we drove in. Parking was CHF18 per night and you can park at the basement and access the hotel using the lifts.
Overall an average rating and the pricing was reasonable for the room.
We arrived on 31st December, around 20:00.
There were 5 people waiting in line and only 1 receptionist.. and God, he took his time...
We had booked a "family room", for the space.. but, without any request they had turned the sofa into a bed.. thus wasting this space.
When we went back to ask to turn it again into sofa, the receptionist became very unpleasant.. saying, it could be done "the next day"
Eventually, he agreed to get it done in the evening, while we were going to have dinner.
The room is big, indeed, but so poorly fitted.. No refrigerator, 3 hangers (for a family room), Swiss only plugs..
It's rated "3 stars" in Switzerland, probably worth only 1 star.
The next morning, we went for the breakfast, for 15 CHF per person, we could expect some service.
In fact, there was a single waitress for about 25 tables at 09:00 on 1st January..
It seems the management of this hotel has no idea about management of hospitality (and this is one of the closest hotel to EHL, the world renowned Hospitality School) allocate personnel according to demand and hire extras according to probable use of services.
They just want to make money out of the visitors they do not care for !
So we move to another hotel after 2 nights.
Of course, this is not transparent on the hotel‘s/aquarium‘s website, and when you find out, it‘s too late.
Needless to say I raised the matter with the hotel. And needless to say this was not successful. Instead of looking forward to the stay, I felt ripped-off even before I arrived.
I do not support this kind of business behaviour and will surely do no further booking with this hotel.
What we didn’t like: reception is slow and weird (one of the receptionists began to tell us his entire life and to ask personal questions; this was awkward). In the room, the a.c. didn’t work correctly; they said it’s set to a standard temperature. But what does “standard” mean anyway? Not enough soap in the shower. Very filthy windows. The restaurant has an odd feeling of desertion.
Aquatis hotel has a great potential. I hope they realize this in order to implement a better policy and - above all - to instruct their staff!
