The world-famous Matterhorn, lovingly called "Horu" by locals, can be seen directly from Zermatt Youth Hostel. Every day of the year, the Youth Hostel offers a charming alternative for all those guests for whom a luxurious hotel room is not necessary to enjoy the Zermatt mountains.

The good and the bad, first the bad. This hostel is located on steep hilly steps, is such a torture to climb up with yr trolley luggage, worst if you have a heavy big luggage. I am out of breath and relief when I finally reached. The check in time is now 4 pm instead of 3 pm. At the reception lobby, there's a glass panel for those sitting there with a good view but the glass look like no glasd and I walk into it, please be careful if you are there. We book a double bed room with bath and toilet attsched. The room is very small in size and if you happen to be big size with big luggage, you may not find comfort. This hostel is 5 levels and there is no lift at all. Again is a torture dragging your luggage to your room. Now the good about this hostel. It has a beautiful view from the lobby and from your bedroom window the view is stunning. The best part is the breakfast, we really enjoy the good quality breakfast. So it made up for all the bad points.

Even though it's a little expensive, it's still cheaper compared to most hotels in Zermatt. Great beds and room but I had a little trouble going up the stairs. The hostel is located on a hill and since we're in the mountains, it's very very very hard to get up there by food. I would recommend taking the bus! Also, breakfast is a little weak. But it's very comfortable, safe and clean. Perfect for people who are traveling solo.

I was very happy with interlaken youth hostel and decided to book zermatt youth hostel. Free Good Breakfast, although a toaster would have been nice but they have good coffee machine and good collections of tea bags. Clean property and good view of Matterhorn from dining area!
The property did not mention that the bus do not go anymore to 'luchre' stoppage. The property is quite high up in the mountain. The bus left me a place way below to the stoppage. so it was very hard to take luggage up to the property. Also, the distance between Luchre bus stop and the property is also bit long. considering the steepness.
Second thing, the property does not have lift! It was really really hard to go up to 3rd floor with luggage. For me, a kind romanian staff helped me to take the suitcase to the 3rd floor.
I also find the room (most probably 138 or 134) that I had been given at the very last corner of the corridor, which is fine. but opposite to that room, there is another property whose bedroom or lounge room facing my room, The room does not have curtain. it was very uncomfortable. Interlaken youth hostel has the curtain. not all the room needs curtain, but some room facing other properties, I strongly recommend this small addition. when I mentioned that to the lady, she said, go to a hotel, this is hostel. I replied, Interlaken has curtain. she did not reply.
while leaving, the lady staff was very rude and said no one can help you to get the suitcase down. One gentleman was kind and helped me. This property is good. unfortunately, it is not possible perhaps to add lift or change location. but they can add curtain for sure.

I am writing the review on how the hostel handled the current Corona situation as of March 16, 2020.

I booked a single room for March 30th, 2020. The reservation was made in January, 2020 with a non-refundable rate since I was certain to go (Who expected Corona in January?). My flight between New York and Zurich has been cancelled due to a US travel ban last Saturday, and also the situation in Swiss was getting worse closing down shops, restaurants and bars in many Cantons. How do I travel with restaurants closed and supermarkets with empty shelves?
When I asked for a cancellation free of charge, Zermatt hostel offered the date change in 2020. But I informed them that I am not able to reschedule in 2020, then, they just cancelled the reservation without any refund.

On the contrary, 3100 Klum hotel (my other reservation on Gornergrat, one day ahead of Zermatt hostel stay) refunded right away even though it was a non-refundable reservation. Also other hotels I had with non-refundable reservations offered me full refunds considering the situation.

I understand that the Zermatt hostel is a cheaper option compared to my other reservations, but I do not understand how there is such a big gap in the treatment of this crazy Corona situation. Hostel do not concern the health and safety for their guests?
I understand no refund if the trip is cancelled due to a personal reason. But this is caused by a disastrous situation no one expected. The accommodation should offer a refund regardless the price tag based on the hospitality common rules in this unprecedented circumstance.

I visited Switzerland three times before with friends and families, and this time it was a fourth trip plan. I was so looking forward to it, I still wanted to visit Swiss even when neighboring Italy was under no control. Currently, I have no means to go to Switzerland with flights cancelled.
I believe I am not the only one who are going through frustrations, and ask Zermatt hostel reconsidering their policy to value their guests and most of all, not to damage their reputation.

We've been there for one week with 70 teenagers for a ski camp. We have been absolutely thrilled all week long, they provided us a wonderful service, we all know how complicated it can sometimes be to endure as many teenagers at the same time, but they met the challenge even better that we could have hoped.
Special thanks to Mattia & Lorena.

It's my first time in a youth hostel as adult... We really enjoyed this place (location, property, staff). Breackfast is rich, they don't have eggs. I could even had chai tea: very unusual. Dinner was good. If you don't look for fancy, just go there!

It has clean room with remarkable meals. Open the window and you see Matterhorn right in your your eyes! The best location you can find in Zermatt!!! Hard to book and takes a long walk and climb before you can reach it. ;)

My sister and I stayed in a Double Ensuite at Zermatt Youth Hostel. Though not right outside the train station, it was easy to be located by foot. As for the Ensuite, we were impressed that it was very spacious and clean with a sufficient bathroom. The breakfast provided was simple yet sufficient to keep us energized for the day, especially given that Zermatt does not have stores and restaurants open at all times. Also, the pre-ordered dinner offered at the Hostel was not bad and affordable, where you would be given a main course, a serving of salad, a bowl of soup and a serving of dessert. I don't mind to stay there again on my next visit to Zermatt !!

I stayed here in an 8 bed dorm for 7 nights while do a ski training course. The hostel is really well run and clean and the staff are very helpful and friendly. The price is very reasonable for what you get and this includes breakfast and evening meal. The quality of the food was superb and the portions are big enough to fill up any tummy. The walk from the station is a pleasant 15 minute stroll through the town with a steep bit near the end of it and its only a 10 minute walk to the bubble lift. Free wifi was included and there is a drying room for boots and ski storage. Really glad I stayed here.

This place is on top of a hill and the way up to the hostel is very steep. If you are carrying a lot of luggage, you may want to consider taking a bus or taxi. From the train station to the hostel, there is only 1 sign “Jugendherberge“ in the town that tells you the way. It took me 30mins to find and reach the hostel.

From the train station, walk up the street to your right once you leave the train. There is a “bucherer watch shop” not far on your right if you are on the right track. Continue your journey up until you see a church. Turn left and walk in front of the church until you see an old Zermatt restaurant on your left side. Walk past it and you will see the 1 and only sign to the hostel. Turn right, follow the road and walk all the way up to a steep slope and you will see the hostel up on your left hand side. Do take note that this hostel does not have any lifts.
The reception counter only opens at 4pm. There are lockers in the public area for you to lock your luggage in between the closing time.

I stayed in the 4 female dorm for 3 nights and the room view was awesome. The window is directly facing the matterhorn. The room is clean and spacious. There are big lockers in the room and it uses a 2 francs coin to lock. It is refundable. The toilets and showers are really clean as well. The hostel does frequent checks and maintenance as I saw the guys going around checking the windows and doors twice during my stay. Breakfast and dinner is included in the price. Please remember to clear your own plates. For the price, it is value for money.

To go to the matterhorn cable car, go down the road staldenstrasse where the bus stop is. Walk past the residential houses. Reach a small junction, turn left to Luchernstrasse. Reach the end of the road, you should see another hostel call matterhorn hostel or Sparky bar. Turn left then go straight up the road, you will reach the matterhorn cable car station. Don’t take a detour by going down the stairs where you come up from the train station because you will have to walk all the way up the same road from the bottom and pass the sparky bar/matterhorn hostel.

Walking distance from Zermatt train station to the Youth Hostel is about a 15 minute walk...up hill...so only 10 minute walk back down to the village. Very pretty walk! Need a map to know where you are going. There is small electric vehicles in Zermatt, like a shuttle, that can give you a ride...we walked so don’t know the price or when they go. We really liked the hostel. Lovely friendly staff and we stayed in a room for 4 people, with a bathroom down the hall. Nice clean comfortable rooms and we had a great view of the Matterhorn from our room! Bonus! Breakfast was included and it was great...Plenty choices for every taste buds. We were only there for one night to catch the Glacier Express train the next day, but I want to go back one day and do some exporting in those beauty mountains. Enjoy Zermatt!

Dear Veana, Thank you for your question! From Zurich to Zermatt you normally have to change once in Visp, but it depends on which train you take. The best way to check is via sbb.ch, where you can enter the departure station and the arrival station. From the train station in Zermatt it will take you about 15 minutes to walk, however you can also take the village bus to “Winkelmatten”, get off at “Luchre” and from there it’s a 1-minute walk. Zermatt is car free but they have electrically powered taxis, which costs between CHF 25.- and CHF 35.- to our Youth Hostel Zermatt (depending on the number of people and items of luggage). We wish you a pleasant stay! The Swiss Youth Hostel Team

No, and trying to prepare meals in your room is discouraged too. This is my one gripe about an otherwise very good place, and yet I would stop here again if we were to revisit the area.

HI, is it suitable for us to stay with our kids, 6, 9 and 12?
Answer from Cabnfever
Henderson, Nevada47 contributions21 helpful votes
Absolutely. I would not hesitate to take kids there. Rent a private room with 4-6 beds and private bath. We rented a private condo (3 bedroom 2 bath) very close to the hostel for the same price, maybe even less. It's a much better option for a family if you plan to stay more than 2 nights. I highly recommend it. Cheers!
