Location, location, location...and a view to die for. We stayed in the Matterhorn View double boutique room. I was nervous because I was afraid it would be too small, but it was the perfect size for my husband and me. The view from our room was incredible, too, and our balcony was large. The service was also amazing. Everyone was very responsive to our needs and wants. They set up our ski lessons and made dinner reservations for us. We are really hoping to visit for Christmas again next year and stay in the same room. The only constructive criticism I have is the pillows could be a bit firmer, but it was still a 5 star experience!

An absolutely wonderful hotel and an amazing vacation! We highly recommend the Schonegg! The location is perfect, the facilities first-rate and the staff could not have been more welcoming and accommodating. Their attention to detail throughout our visit was superb and they have an ability to make all guests feel like family! From taxi service to/from the train station to boxed breakfasts for an early morning departure no detail was left unnoticed. Thank you for a most memorable vacation!

We stayed at the Schonegg in early August, the staff were all approachable and friendly and the owners spent time going around the guests in the evening and having a chat, which is refreshing. The hotel was in an excellent location in Zermatt with a lift to and from “River” level and a 100 m walk through a tunnel, which must be one of the most unusual hotel entrances around with coloured lighting and mode music. The views from the room facing the Matterhorn must be one of the best views to wake up too. We stayed on a half board basis and after a day walking in the mountains the 4 course taster menus were of an exceptionally high standard and never failed to delight, we were fortunate enough to be in Zermatt on the Swiss National Day and in addition to the special dinner menu that evening the view from the hotel of the fireworks displays in Zermatt and around the valley were spectacular, as was the lighting of the beacons along the cliff faces on the opposite side of the valley. We had an unforgettable holiday at the Schonegg. Although not physically we had to drag ourselves kicking and screaming in our minds from the hotel.

I stayed 6 nights in the Charme master suite which at around 630 CHF per night B&B is quite pricey.
Overall, the hotel is great. Lovely bar and restaurant, fantastic terrace with Matterhorn view and truly excellent food & wine. A real godsend in these times of restaurant closures during the pandemic.
Nice spa area and good treatments.
Staff are friendly, efficient and eager to help.
Location 2 mins walk from Sunegga ski lift and 5 mins from the village is superb.
However, the accommodation was disappointing. On the plus side, 2 recently and very well renovated bathrooms, 2 balconies, spacious (2 floors), lots of storage and a working fireplace (where the staff laid the fire daily). On the downside, very tired decor and furniture. Hideous and grubby carpet on stairs, old and uncomfortable sofa & chairs, very old tables, lamps and truly awful built in wooden desk area. Duvet, pillows very „floppy“ and bedlinen old/worn. Towels thin and worn in my view. On both counts I have better quality at home.
As a regular Relais & Château visitor, I expect high thread count linen, fluffy pillows and duvets, stylish look and feel (doesn’t have to be super modern, traditional is also good-just has to be fresh and good quality). Those expectations were not met at all.
I felt that the price was too high for the quality of the room; if that had been better given all the positives I would have been fine with that price tag.

Dear BevBrookes Thank you for your detailed feedback following your recent stay at Chalet Hotel Schönegg. We appreciate your compliments on our fantastic location, great food, and the overall atmosphere of our hotel. We are pleased that you enjoyed the Charme master suite, especially with the recently renovated bathrooms, balconies, and the working fireplace. We're also glad to hear that you found our staff friendly, efficient, and helpful, and that our spa facilities and treatments met your expectations. However, we apologize for any disappointment regarding the accommodation itself. Your feedback on the tired decor, worn carpet, old furniture, and the quality of bedding and towels is important to us. Since March 2021, we have made numerous renovations and improvements to enhance our facilities continuously. As a member of Relais & Châteaux, we strive to meet the highest standards of hospitality, including the comfort and quality of our rooms. We regret that we did not fully meet your expectations in this regard on this occasion. Your feedback is invaluable to us as we continually strive to improve our services. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future, where we can ensure a more enjoyable and comfortable stay. Warm regards, Your Schönegg Team

This hotel is really lovely. I have stayed in Zermatt many times and have always stayed in the middle of the town. This hotel is not quite in the centre (a 7 minute walk away.) However, this is actually a better location for accessing the lifts. It is next to the Sunnega lift and there is a ski bus just outside the door which takes you to the other two lifts.
The view from our room balcony of the town and Matterhorn was wonderful. There is a lovely terrace area where one can have drinks and food and a wonderful view. The staff is delightful. Most of the staff are young and very professional, friendly and welcoming.
The restaurant is very good and the choices are excellent and good value.
The hotel is not large, which makes everything more convenient. The spa area is nice. There is no pool but there are a couple of pools in nearby hotels which can be used if required.
We stayed in two different rooms and the newly renovated rooms are preferable as the bathrooms are much better.
I highly recommend this hotel and will stay there again in the future.

Pros- This hotel has a beautiful location and view. The breakfast room is stunning with a view of the Matterhorn and the outdoor deck is nice as well. They have a convenient elevator to tunnel to get to the town. The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming, every person we interacted with was very nice and helpful.

Cons- Overall the hotel needs a facelift/update. The spa area is dated, the jacuzzis are very old, look like they need maintenance, and lukewarm. Small sauna and steam room. I also felt the cleaning of the room was not great. First of all there were some mildew spots on the ceiling in the shower area. Additionally I have to mix a medicine with water for myself dily and used a glass in the room. The next day the maid clearly just gave the glass a good rinse and put it back as if it were clean as I saw a little residue from the medicine on it and the spoon that was also placed back. We are in the middle of a pandemic and they aren't even putting new glasses in the room? Just rinsing them between? Makes me wonder how many people used this glass before me. It seems the bare minimum to swap out used glasses for fresh ones in a room. This was pretty shocking alone but especially at a four star hotel. Overall that made me question the cleaning practices if any of the dishes in the room or the water vase were being cleaned between guests etc.

We splurged on a charme double room with Matterhorn view and would highly recommend. Hard to beat having a glass of wine on the balcony while seeing the Matterhorn in all its splendor. Room was spacious, well appointed and attractive but would note it is not air conditioned. Breakfast was of high quality. We had dinner at the hotel twice and the first night food and service were exemplary but the second night quality of both food and service was less consistent. Front desk staff were very helpful. If arriving by train, would recommend having hotel pick you up as the uphill walk was challenging with luggage. We used the complementary transfer service to return to the train station.

Excellent location, service, facilities! A high end hotel 100 yards/meters from the funicular to get you up to slopes, and a short 5 min walk (if that) to the main street with restaurants, shops, etc. When booking, we feared location might be a bit too far from the center - in reality it is perfect. We would definitely stay there again.

First off, the staff is amazing. They are so professional and warm, they greeted myself and my fiance just so amazing. Then we were taken to the room and the balcony offers a nice place to sit, obviously it's very cold this time of year, so bundle up in January. The view of the town at night all lit up, but without a whole lot of light pollution let's you see a very clear view of the Matterhorn and the mountains. See the picture I attached to show you our view. The restaurant had great food, they waited for us to come down and be the last party they served when we checked in. This town definitely shuts down early, but that's because they don't have much daylight hours. My fiance received a hot stone massage that she enjoyed, make sure to book in advance they have one masseuse. They are also very conveniently located with a tunnel that allows us to go down to the city level and come back up pretty easy and a nice bar right outside called the Snowboat and a bus stop to the Matterhorn. Everything is walking distance and the hotel will pick you up and drop you off at the train station for free. Obviously out of generosity we tipped the driver. We are definitely coming back and this is the hotel hands down, no questions asked we are staying at.

You can purchase lift passes at the hotel. The Chalet also provides a discount coupon for an excellent rental shop nearby (just outside the tunnel entrance and across the river.) We have used that rental shop 4 or 5 years running with excellent results. There's no need to reserve because they have plenty of inventory, most of it new(er).
