At 2222 metres, you’re a lot closer to heaven and in the clear thin air the stars put on their most breathtaking display. Reception holds the key to a heavenly experience. Feel relaxed in the beneficial mountain climate in the middle of fragrant pine and larch forests and with a spectacular view of the Matterhorn. Arriving is an experience in itself. As the rack railway climbs and the commotion of the village is left behind, sit back, relax and enjoy the majestic view of the Matterhorn. In the summer, the highest tram in Europe waits at Riffelalp station to take you on what is probably the shortest tram ride in the world to the Riffelalp Resort. In the winter, our porter will be happy to pick you up on the skidoo. Or you can make use of the short walk through the picturesque forest to listen to the silence of Riffelalp for the first time. In summer, Riffelalp offers a typical Alpine scenery with meadows and cows. In the midst of one of the most beautiful walking, biking and climbing areas in the Alps, the Resort offers a variety of all kinds of activities. In the winter, the Riffelalp Resort is in the middle of the world famous Zermatt ski resort - the ski slopes go directly past the hotel - and is a perfect ski-in, ski-out hotel. For anyone wanting to go on an excursion to the excitement of Zermatt, the village can be reached with the Gornergrat railway in just 20 minutes. Half-board guests can dine in our partner restaurants in the village. The hotel's train brings night owls back to the Riffelalp free of charge until 11.30 pm. Most guests prefer to stay in heaven on earth at 2,222 metres above sea level and enjoy the distance from the rest of the world.

Riffelalp resort 2222m is an excellent hotel in the most picturesque of places. We spent two nights here near the end of our weeklong Switzerland trip (wish we had more time). We booked on Amex fine hotels which always elevates our experience. We had just spent a few days in Bern Oberland region, so weren’t sure how similar it would be, but were glad we treated ourselves at the end of our trip. It’s a bit of a trek to get to, you need to take the Gornergrat Bahn train up to Riffelalp (26 CHF one way, though we had Swiss travel pass so was 13 CHF instead). The hotel also offers a discount, but we didn’t know this when we arrived. Apparently there is a resort porter at the train station who can help you out. We traveled light with just backpacks so this wasn’t necessary and it was easy enough to get from the main train station across the street to the Gornergrat bahn station. Once you arrive, there’s a timed trolley (a little bit of Disneyworld vibes, but you gotta lean into it). It’s a short ride along the path to the hotel (could walk in about 5 minutes).

The grounds are beautiful and we were fortunate to arrive on a clear day with magnificent Matterhorn views. Amex fine hotel benefit upgraded us to the superior Matterhorn view room which was incredible. Loved the huge shower and separate huge bathtub. Check in was a breeze, they provided us with all the info we needed for our stay.

One let down for my husband was the location wasn’t great for mountain biking as the trains don’t allow mountain bikes during prime part of the day. He would’ve had to train down to Zermatt, rent the bike, cable car up to Rothorn and ride down through sunnega. He ended up skipping this due to time constraints and the hassle of getting a bike, so keep this in mind if this is something you’re interested in.

I had planned to get a massage at the spa while he did this (since I had had enough mountain biking with him in Bern Oberland). Unfortunately, since I am 3.5 months pregnant and this is sort of a babymoon for us, the spa could not offer me any of their services. They did not have correct pillows for a prenatal massage and wouldn’t even offer me the foot massage (didn’t completely agree with this reasoning but I understand the liability portion of it as a physician myself). I could enjoy the outdoor pool (fortunately it seemed less warm on the day we went, they keep it just cool enough to still be safe for pregnancy, but warm enough to enjoy in the cold mountain weather) but obviously could not use any of the saunas or dip more than my legs in the whirlpool. The view from the pool is amazing and the strong spa Jets in the pool were the closest I could get to a massage after our hike. Will need to come back post partum to enjoy this beautiful spa. They have so many different types of saunas to experience.

We spent our full day riding up to Gornergrat on the train and hiking back down. It was a beautiful hike, though I recommend going when the Matterhorn isn’t covered by clouds. It gets a bit steep near the end which were rough on knees, but glad we didn’t opt to hike up instead since the altitude is no joke.

Breakfast was included with our room which was a great buffet with lots of fresh juice options and not surprisingly, excellent service.

We had one dinner at Al Bosco which had very good Matterhorn views. We also had some snacks and drinks at the Terrace bar, which had some very tasty, creative appetizer dishes (“Pleasures for your palate” page that could’ve easily come from a Michelin stared tasting menu, so that was a pleasant surprise). Food is not cheap here, but we are in Switzerland and in a more remote hotel so this should not be a surprise. Amex fine hotels gave us a $100 food credit which helped with this.

There’s an excellent play area for kids as well (or man-child husbands who like to flip on trampolines). Was mostly an older crowd when we were there, not sure if this is different in the winter season.

Keep in mind the last train up is at 21:50 from Zermatt, but the hotel offers a private train (not posted on the public schedule) at 23:30 (I believe) for late night stragglers. Try to make earlier dinner reservations if going down to Zermatt. Our tasting menu reservation at 7pm was cutting it close and we had to hustle to the station since we didn’t want to wait until the 23:30 train.

Overall, we were incredibly happy with our experience. It’s not easy to get to and isn’t the most convenient place to be for Zermatt nightlife, but if you want to be pampered and enjoy the beautiful view of the Matterhorn away from the bustle of Zermatt, this is the place for you. For our babymoon/1 year anniversary trip, this was perfect. Research the activities you want to do ahead of time (the mountain biking and lack of prenatal spa services is something we should’ve found out on our own research, so that’s our fault). This is however, an incredibly convenient for going up to Gornergrat, and we skipped Glacier Paradise due to cost and logistics (which we we’re totally ok with as views seemed better from Gornergrat of the Matterhorn). We would love to come back in the winter and see what it has to offer then.

Excellent stay in the Riffelalp resort, which is on a mountain and which we booked for a getaway weekend in the snow. It is very peaceful with only nature (and skiing slopes) around. The rooms are fantastic and appointed with 5* standard, but the ones in the lowest category can be somewhat small with 20 m² - the next category is substantially more expensive though. The heated outdoor pool is one of the highlights, but it can be crowded in the afternoons. Food and restaurants were also very good and the hotel has found a good way to manage covid-related procedures during breakfast. The biggest highlight was the concierge, Mr. Chandra, who has gone above and beyond to help us with our activities and plans. At the end of the day, it is the people that really make the difference between a good and an excellent hotel and this is a good example of excellent service! We hope to come back soon.

This hotel is excellent for all the skiers/snowboarders, that find walking to the gondola challenging because the piste is right next to the hotel. If you ski down, there is a gondola going to all the ski places. For people who like gyming, there is a very nice gym and a spa with a sauna, jacuzzi, and hamam. There are also three charming restaurants. One is Italian across the hotel building, one is next to the bowling under the reception, and the last is in the same place where you will eat breakfast.

It has it's own railway, and when you arrive you see the iconic Matterhorn mountain across the valley
Stunning sunset spot
Glaciers are all around the view.
Food is first class. And the dress code is very relaxed
Bedrooms are enormous with a bath that would accommodate 2 people with ease

For families a great kids club

Wonderful walks direct from the hotel
A spa which is spectacular , with an outside pool overlooking g the Matterhorn too

Concierge is amazing , and sorts all sorts of lunch and other spots

Very clean hotel

We loved the terrace bar
Especially the toblerone cocktails!!!!
The best dish we had here was the signature Riffelalp pizza!!

It is at about 7000 feet above sea level and so the air is pure and the mood is relaxing

Just go
You won't regret it!!

This resort was amazing. We absolutely loved everything about the place. Our balcony room could not have had a better view of the Matterhorn. We have stayed in Zermatt area many times and this will be our go to place to stay. Our room was large , well appointed and very clean . Reception was fantastic. We were met at the train station by a Porter who took care of our luggage. The cute little train from the Gornergratt train stop is fun and add to the ambiance. We ate at the Italian restaurant and the lounge and our meals were excellent. The location of the resort is a great starting location for many hikes. We purchased a Zermatt Peak pass and really got our moneys worth as the resort is along the Gornergratt express route. The experience of taking the train up from the resort and stopping at the many locations is different at different times of the day. We stayed 3 nights and it was our favorite hotel of our 3 weeks in Switzerland.

Amazing location overlooking the Matterhorn and Zermatt. Cool experience getting to the hotel. Overall an amazing place to stay. We had one major disappointment: we reserved and paid extra for a Matterhorn Superior Room and they “up-graded” us to a Jr Suite which wasn’t a suite, just barely larger and no direct view of the Matterhorn since you really had to go on the patio where there was a tree blocking the view. The patio was not private either since there are windows looking directly into the lounge area for the spa. They moved us to another Jr “Suite” which was right next to the pool…apparently these were the last and worst rooms they had for the first since they gave away the rooms that we originally reserved. We did get moved again to our originally reserved room for the 2nd and 3rd nights of our stay but it was disappointing to not have it for all 3 nights as we had planned. Travelers should beware of getting either of those “Jr Suites” since they are both terrible and not direct Matterhorn views as advertised. The front desk evening manager was a bit rude although she did finally apologize but that was it…no other follow up from her after the first night debacle.

I enjoyed a memorable 4 day stay at the Riffelalp in early July. The room I was allocated (506) was beautiful, with a view straight onto the Matterhorn. The room was spacious, well-appointed, with an excellent bathroom. The solid construction meant that the room seem completely sound-proofed.
Breakfast was excellent, with a wide selection of foods, and eggs cooked to order.
I cannot comment on dinner (saw the previous reviews) in the two restaurants, but room-service was good.
Most impressive was the staff. Uniformly professional, helpful and friendly! In particular, the concierge stood out with his excellent tips for hiking.

Even with a restricted number of tourists because of Covid, Zermatt felt like a money machine. It was therefore a relief to return to the Riffelalp each afternoon and enjoy the welcoming and peaceful atmosphere.

Overall stay was faultless, I strongly recommend the hotel!

Been here 4 years in a row from 2015 when I worked as a Nanny for a family. Great service, roome service, gym and spa. Friendly and happy staff. The food are fantastic!
I have stayed in different rooms each year and they are all gorgeous and unique.
Awesome ski-in and ski-out.

They will pick up your bags and skiis from the mountain train/hotell when arriving and departure. If you what go up by train to the slopes or down to the villages they will take you to the train by their snowmobile. Comes in handy with the kids.

I really recommend Rifflealp Resort. I would love to go back in the summer to explore the mountains.

2nd time at Riffelalp, this time for 1 week. 5 star in almost all categories, even under covid. However, the food is not on the same level as the hotel would suggest. Neither the main restaurant or the Italian one deliver food of high quality. If you consider meat at SFr 50 its should be of the highest standard prepared. In fact its not and not even comparable how the same dishes get delivered in other resorts in CH. It almost leaves the impression as to covid to safe money on the quality of kitchen staff and food quality. Very sad to see if you are willing to pay for high standard and its missing out on that one.

We have enjoyed skiing in Zermatt over the years with 6 separate visits. This was our first at the Riffelalp resort, the only ski-in / ski-out resort on the mountain. Every aspect of our vacation was effortless and delightful, from the concierge service meeting us at the village train station, to the high-quality rentals and secure ski room. The resort has 3 outstanding restaurants, each with their own culinary focus. We rotated among them during the week and were always delighted by the outstanding service and delicious food. Our room had a spectacular view of the Matterhorn from inside as well as on the balcony. . . what could be better? Oh, the spa of course. Soaking in a hot pool while skiers zip by is almost a surreal experience. Book with confidence! This is the trip of a lifetime.
