Hotel Riffelhaus is living testimony to the golden age of mountaineering. Mountain climbing and hotel history were written here. In 1853, the hotel on the Riffelberg was the second hotel in Zermatt. It opened even before the Gornergrat railway was built. The beams and stones were hauled up the mountain by mules and using a lot of manpower. Over the course of the decades, the initial mountain climber accommodations developed into a comfortable mountain hotel, without losing the atmosphere of the pioneering days.

Above Zermatt right on the slopes a real ski in ski out hotel. The location is perfect in the sense that the gornegrat ski area is immediately accessible and the Matterhorn paradise area is easily accessible with two gondola rides. It is possible to send your skis and boots in advance with the SBB, the staff of the hotel will pick them from the train station and you will find them in the ski room on your arrival

The hotel has the best location in Zermatt ski area to access the slopes. Superb service from all staff with an excellent standard of food served in a very attractive dining room. Some of the best views in the Alps.

My family stayed here for the Christmas Holiday and it was absolutely magical. The location is breathtaking, with views of the Matterhorn from the dining room and hot tub and wellness sauna. The staff treats you like family - many guests come back every year and I can see why. They serve you breakfast and dinner, and the dishes are traditional and tasty (they always have a vegetarian option). It’s one of the few “ski on, ski off” hotels on the mountain - so it’s very convenient. Thank you to Julia and Tommy for making our stay so special, waiting until we can come back.

One night during a two day bike tour in Zermatt. The hotel has been very well renovated, lovely rooms. The spa was a great welcome after a day's riding.
Dinner should have been too!
It was one of the worst meals we have eaten. The service was curt, the entrée buffet salads were very basic and the lettuce was unclean. It felt like a cheap coach tour stopover rather than a four star hotel in Zermatt. The main course looked and tasted like the chef had prepared the food earlier in the day and then gone home. Leaving the staff to heat the fish and cheese to death. It was, in part, inedible. Even the desert tasted like it had come out of a packet.
The breakfast, on the other hand, was excellent with some local specialities. It really felt like a different place!
The site is magnificent but the restaurant could do much, much better.

The subpar dinners and dinner service almost ruins what is otherwise a very nice ski hotel. Be prepared to wait an hour for your entree and another hour for the dessert (even if it’s just sorbet). The food itself is random; you cannot count on the entrees to provide enough protein after a long ski day. Better fill up on the self serve appetizers. Based on the food experience this cannot be a four star hotel.

If you don’t care about food, this is a great location with spectacular views and good facilities including ski locker area with heated boot holders.

Dear Keith, thank you very much for taking the time and effort to give us feedback. Only with your input can we continue to develop and improve. We are very sorry that you had to wait longer for the main course. I was happy to try and find the error here, as this should not have happened and according to your description all the other guests had already had their main course. We sincerely apologise as this was due to a technical error. could you tell us what exactly was wrong with the food? Thanks again for your update. Kind regards Julia

First off all, I can not understand all this negative points in TA about Riffelhaus. Coming here since 20 years for skivacation, we never faced such a friendly staff crew and such a open minded GM. We felt staying with friends. The food is just great, although it seems, that some budget monitoring is going on. I have to mention, that a wider variation of meat and cheese at the breakfast buffet could be a good idea. We are already looking forward to spent in 2021 again some very nice skidays. For those of you, who see the outdoor jaccuzi as the main selling point, please arrive early to enjoy the nice mountain view during daytime and go up early in the morning to see the fantastic sunrise in the snowcovered mountain

The spectacular Matterhorn view in itself is sufficient to recommend this great boutique hotel. The comfortable up to date rooms, great restaurant and excellent sauna with spectacular views only add to the experience. Location next to the lift and at the top of great pistes allows to be the first ones out on the sloped and carve the first tracks every morning

This hotel is a 1-2 minute walk to a ski lift with all the blue runs (also known as green or the easier runs in the US) so if you are a novice or experienced skier this is a great hotel with access to all trails of different difficulty. Food and views are amazing!! Super impressed with the spa as well. All guests were very considerate of time and did not linger anywhere long so it feels like you’re at the spa alone. Costumer service was very helpful and kind. Highly recommend taking them up on their offer to take your luggage free of charge from the train. It makes walking to the hotel a lot easier. We stayed here for 6 nights and we will be back again.

The location, at least in winter, is pure magic. At 2,500 metres you are away from the crowds and enjoy a sublime vista. The Matterhorn is your neighbour. Prices for this property are at 5-star level. But does the hotel deliver on the promise? The rooms are rather basic, instead of a Nespresso maker you get a kettle, some Twining bags and a little Nescafé. There is no minibar either. Service is often curt, more of the Parisian kind than what you would expect from Swiss German hospitality. In spite of all of the above, we loved the place. It was the location that made the difference.

You cannot beat this location. With 25 rooms the service felt so personalized. The view out the window seems like I could touch the Matterhorn. Highly recommend. Met so many couples from different countries.
