The hotel used to be a prison and the rooms are reminiscent of jail cells with their spartan furnishings. The old wooden floors creak reminding you of their age. There is a lovely garden restaurant but be sure to reserve a table when you check in. Parking is off site, remember to ask for a parking ticket from the hotel...

This is an interesting property that was narrowly saved from the wrecking ball. It is obvious that a lot of thought and creativity went into the renovation of this very old property. We found the desk clerks eager to assist, very knowledgeable and conversant in English.

We stayed here for four nights before Xmas. The location was perfect for enjoying the Xmas markets. The rooms are simple, some might say spartan, but overall the hotel was our favorite during our entire 4 weeks of travel. Staff gave great bar/restaurant recommendations.

I love this hotel. It has so much character with old wooden floors and a glass lift inside a tower, which takes you from the street below upto reception. The welcome at reception was warm and friendly. The room facilities maybe basic comparred to the chain hotels, but the rooms are comfortable and clean. The location is very central and...

We spent 2 nights in Basel at this wonderful, historic hotel after a Rhine cruise, and it was the nicest surprise of our trip. The hotel was a former jailhouse. Everything about it was charming and even better than we had expected. A highlight was the food. Dinner in the Brasserie was outstanding, and the restaurant was cozy and intimate....

It is a very nice hotel located in the old town of Basel, which is one of the nicest old town I have ever seen. The building is 150 years old, wooden floors, old lifts, direct view on the Munster, etc... however the cleaning is light and the pillows are too soft to our taste. The restaurant is great: brasserie...

Had we stayed here on another trip, it might have earned a better report: up against hotels with better service, amenities, and/or style, this seemed so-so--and very expensive. Once we found it (its elevator is tucked into a side alley with poor signage), we found our room comfortable and decent-sized. Its location is close to shops and restaurants in the...

I stayed a few nights in this hotel while visiting Switzerland. The hotel is very quite, but you have a direct access to the city thanks to a efficient elevator. Our standard room was not so big, but large enough for 2. It was very clean, and bed were comfortable. I will definitely come back to Au Violon hotel while...

First I must say that I truely enjoyed our stay at au Violon. The place oozes character and the proprietors have assembled a great staff. We stayed in one of the larger rooms and were very comfortable. I really consider this place to be a fantastic value. Now for the bad...I will never book a room here on a Fri...

You cannot fault this hotel, it is beautiful. The tram (forgotten which number) stops right outside and you walk into the pretty courtyard and then into the most amazing small hotel you could imagine. First you notice the wonderful smells coming from their ground floor restaurant - which must be one of the most famous and poshest restaurants in Switzerland....
