If you visit Basel, home of the Beyeler Foundation and many other museums, the hotel "Au Violon" is a must. It is a former prison converted in a pleasant hotel with 20 rooms on two floors, some of them with a view on the courtyard, other overlooking the heart of the city. It cannot be easier to access the old...

We had a mini-holiday in Basel and stayed at the Au Violon. The hotel and restaurant is in a scenic location, great views and has lots of character - especially as it's the former city jail. The hotel was clean and comfortable, although the reception area was under-resourced. There wasn't a luggage room and staff were not always on hand....

"Au violon" is a former prison, and so are the standard rooms: a mixture of prison cell and monastery. The standard rooms are quite small, no carpet on the wooden floor, no sitting opportunities beside the single wooden chair in front of a small table. No atmosphere at all. There is neither a TV not a fridge in the standard...

I stayed in a Category C room (room #16) for 1 night (mid June). It had 3 windows: 2 at head height, 1 a narrow, vertical window looking into a leafy inner courtyard. (Carousers late at night (about 01:30) singing loudly with a guitar propelled their noise right up the courtyard walls (like a canyon); closing the window did not...

I adore everything about AuViolon. Meri is alway so efficient and lovely. The setting in the garden for dinner is so exquisite in the month of June when I come for Art Basel. The rooms are clean and streamlined. Beds are so comfy. I always have a view of the rooftops and churches as the building is set way up...

This hotel is hidden away off the main streets and a little difficult to find without some local help, but is so convenient to the Christmas Market and is within walking distance to the Rhine River. We found it charming. The hotel was build in the 1500's and was first used as a monastery. It later became a prison, and...

Not knowing what to expect, yet were aware that this was a former prison, we were pleasantly surprised. Our first encounter, of course, was with the front office staff - extremely helpful giving us a very warm welcome. During our three-day stay, they were always super friendly and gave us helpful information on restaurants and walks through the city. As...

I had gone to Basel to attend a meeting and was referred to this special hotel by the host institution. It is a perfectly located hotel, at the heart of the city centre, with beautiful views and a delightful French restaurant. The staff is super helpful. I asked a lot of questions and they never hesitated to answer. Speak perfect...

Au Violon is a former police station, so most of the rooms are pairs of prison cells that have been joined together. The solid construction means that the rooms are very quiet. You look out onto a quiet courtyard, which is pleasant. The breakfast room has a good view across Basel. Breakfast is good with a wide range of bread,...

Conveniently located on the edge of the old city, this characterful and quirky establishment has much to recommend. Helpful multi-lingual staff, pleasant clean spacious rooms, continental breakfast with delicious pastries. Didn't try the brasserie although locals recommended its fare. Would definitely stay there again.
