The Relais Santa Chiara is a charming and elegant hotel located in the heart of the rolling hills of Tuscany, between Florence and Sienna. The hotel looks over the splendid, peaceful countryside towards Volterra and is situated just 400 mt. below the city walls of San Gimignano, a town of fairy tales with its 14 medieval towers that testify to a fascinating past. In addition, the strategic location allows one to make day trips to all the major cultural and artistic sites of the surrounding area. The hotel offers 40 rooms, made up of 4 different room types either facing the rear garden or facing the splendid Tuscan countryside. Many rooms have beautiful balconies and our superior rooms have bath with hydromassage. All rooms have air-conditioning, digital TV with international channels, hair dryers and mini-bar. Other services include private parking, a meeting room with a capacity up to 60 persons, Mediterranean garden filled with olive and cypress trees that encompass the swimming pool, which includes a separate, heated mini pool with hydro massage and an inviting and well stocked bar serving an array of beverages and a variety of snacks and light meals. The breakfast is a complete buffet that will certainly satisfy the biggest morning appetite. In the summer breakfast and bar service are available outside on the terrace. Particular attention has been given to the hotel’s furnishings. Some of the most prestige materials make up the guest rooms, such as brier wood and national oak. The public areas breath an atmosphere that’s classic Tuscany. Florentine terracotta covers the lobby which is integrated with a colorful pastel marble mosaic. The famous Serena gray stone is another dominate element found throughout the hotel, like the reception desk and the grand fireplace. Activities available nearby are: walking itineraries departing from the hotel, guided tours of the historic centre, scooter rental, wine tasting (come with light lunch), cooking classes, tennis, horse riding and a 27 hole golf course 18 km away.

We had a great time in San Gimignano at Santa Chiara Hotel. It was close to the town so we could walk there and enjoy all the great food and sights. I especially enjoyed going there after all the tourists left. The hotel had really nice accommodations and a beautiful pool. The breakfasts were filling and I really enjoyed the fresh fruit salad. Everything was wonderful. Cristian at the front desk was especially helpful when my daughter got a bee sting. This is really an A plus hotel.

The booking service we used described the location as 400 yds south of the historic centre of the town. In fact, as the hotel's own website says, it is 400 yds (optimistic?) outside the perimeter of the ancient city walls - fine if you arrive by car, but awkward if you take the advice of the Tourist Information Service and travel from Florence by bus. The booking service confirmation showed the earliest check-in time to be 12:00 noon. On arrival we were told that it was 3:00 pm. That said, the hotel was bright, clean, and friendly. The room was tastefully furnished, and most, if not all, rooms have a balcony, though inevitably some do not have the benefit of the stunning views across the valley. The car parking area is secure, but there is a hefty daily parking charge.…

My friend and I stayed here for a week while were were biking around San Gimignano. The hotel is just outside the city walls--a perfect location away from the crowds but only a five minute walk into the city. Our rooms were small but spotlessly clean and well maintained. A nice breakfast buffet is prepared each morning and served from 8 - 10 a.m. Some of the rooms have large balconies (very large) that overlook the Tuscan landscape. I was in room 205 and the views were spectacular. The outside patio is really nice, and the tone of the hotel is relaxed and informal. All of the staff were polite and helpful. I would certainly choose to return and I recommend this property is the highest terms.

We chose this hotel as we wanted to stay close to the old city, however as we were driving, didn't want to deal with the narrow streets and traffic restrictions within the city walls. This hotel was a perfect choice. Great location, short walk to the city, beautiful view (ask for a view of the countryside, not the garden) and really helpful staff. The decor is a bit outdated, but the rooms were very clean and comfortable. Great, large bathroom. Parking was easy, right in front of the hotel.

We stayed here for 5 very relaxing days. A short walk up to San Gim where we ate dinner each night, the pool was beautiful during the day, the location was great and we based ourselves here for our trips around the region. Bfast is ok, but nothing special, handy book collection and quiet, few other guests were bothering us. Overall this is a nice hotel in Tuscany, it has beautiful views of the rolling hills and overall i would recommend this place. The cleaning staff insist on tidying up your room and so will pack up books etc.

San Gimignano is an ideal place for exploring Tuscany and Relais Santa Chiara is the ideal place to stay. Just a couple of minutes walk from the southern gate of the old town, with it's own parking (very important), pool and stunning views over the countryside you could not make a better choice of hotel. This is probably the friendliest hotel we've ever stayed at, everyone there seems to take a genuine interest in you, how your trip is going and what you've been doing and are more than happy to give advice and ideas. The hotel is immaculately clean and the continental breakfasts were lovely. We can't wait to go back!

We did a lot of research before choosing our hotels for our trip to Tuscany, and it paid off. We began with five nights in San Gimignano. The Relais Santa Chiara was a nice property for those nights. We had a suite, which consisted of a nice bedroom, a small sitting area, and a small bath. The shower was small, but not unusually so for Italy. The balcony had a great view, although it was too late in the season to make good use of it. Everyone was pleasant and helpful, and the breakfast was good. The hotel was about a five minute walk from the city, which we loved. Taken by itself, the hotel is a modest effort. But considering the location and the staff it deserves five stars.

We were more than satisfied with the beauty of the property and the gracious treatment we received from everyone on the staff during our six days at RSC. Breakfast was ample and attractively presented. Rooms were clean and comfortable -- except for the tiny shower. The location was perfect for visiting S. Gimignano and convenient for day trips to other towns in Tuscany. We would return here again. Thanks, Thomas, Erica and everyone for a wonderful stay.

We stayed for 3 nights and found the management and staff helpful, professional, attentive, and human. Unlike a number of Italian hotels, the staff regardless of position and duties were always looking at ways to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Apart from the ideal location to town and amenities of the hotel, by far the service provided made our stay one we will remember and look forward to a return visit.
