During my stay at the Hermes I appreciated the spotless, spacious rooms, the location, and the friendliness of the staff, but the best part was being able to talk with the remarkable woman who owns the hotel. She is a longtime Florentine with deep roots (and family) in the U.S., so I felt very much at home. Plus I learned...

The owner is a very nice lady, who speaks english, italian, spanish and french, and she can tell u everything you need to know to get around florence! I had a great time! highly recemended!

Are you planning a trip to Florence and want something real "stepping"?! Hotel Hermes gave my father and me a wonderful "step" to everything!! It´s right a few steps from the train station, steps from the bus stop, steps from shops, restaurants, and you only have to climb a few steps" to enter into a very warm and charming place,...

We just returned from 3 days in Florence and the staff at Hotel Hermes made our stay very enjoyable. The hotel is centrally located, only 10-15 minute walk to almost any major attraction in the city. The owner pretty much mapped out our whole stay as well as suggested wonderful places to dine, which made our trip better than I...

We have stayed in Florence a couple of times and spent loads of money on hotels. We have walked the streets of Florence after a long train ride LOOKING for our hotel. This hotel provided basic 2 star requirements at a very affordable price, 1 minute walk from the train station. Easy access to anywhere in Florence, easy to catch...

I needed a room for one night, waiting for the morning train to Denmark, going back from Elba. By sheer luck I spotted and chosed the Hermes, just opposite the railway station and competing with a lot of other hotels. The atmosphere was very friendly and I got everything I needed. I can highly recommend the hotel having as well...

Hotel Hermes is ideally located across the street from the train station (Santa Maria Novella) and down the street from the historic center of Florence. The Duomo (main cathedral) and the outdoor market at San Lorenzo are just down the street. The Ponte Vecchio (the old bridge), the Uffizi (art muesum) and the designer shops in Via Tournabouni are not...

Hotel Hermes is lovely, simple and very clean. The owner is perfectly fluent in English and Spanish, and is a true Florentine. I found myself on many an afternoon, perched on a stool in the cozy lobby, drinking cappuccino and practicing my Italian with the staff. Centrally located, Hotel Hermes is perfect for young people travelling alone - especially if...

This owner run hotel/albergue is immaculately clean, the staff is delightful and the location is wonderful. Walking distance from the train station, the main bus station, and a few blocks from the historical center. There are also lots of little places to eat nearby, including Il Giardino, a block away. Ask for a room on the inner courtyard though as...

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
