Detailed Reviews
The hotel is situated about 750m from the centre of Florence and all of the tourist areas are in easy walking distance.
The hotel was comfortable and the ground floor areas were well-fitted.
The staff are all excellent, great customer service and knowledgeable about local restaurants. We used one recommendation on one evening at a restaurant off the main tourist circuit and it was excellent and only about 500m from the hotel.
We noted three point to consider if your book;
1. Being an old building the rooms are all different sizes and configurations which adds to the character. However some are small. We had booked a classic and the website states that these are 14-18m2 - the room offered was at the lower end of the range. We asked for a swap and were given a larger room but did have to pay an upgrade.
2. Again because of the style of the building, if you aren't very mobile this may not be the place for you as whilst there is a lift there are 5 or 6 steps up to it.
3. Breakfast was pretty average and the hot option wasn't particularly good.
However as I said the staff are great both at breakfast, in the bar and on the reception desk and the location worked out really well.

The Hotel Cellai was delightful. The hotel is beautiful, with lovely sitting areas, artwork throughout and afternoon tea. My room was very clean and comfortable. The staff is outstanding, always ready to help. Each morning I enjoyed the delicious breakfast buffet with fresh fruit, croissants, hot entrees and cappuccino. The hotel is a short walk to so many famous museums in Florence, the Mercado Centrale (Central Market) and even a laundromat two blocks away. If I ever return to Florence, I will definitely stay at Cellai.

i have never experienced a boutique hotel such as this! every visitors rom is different and unique. the bottom floor is spectacular with several sitting rooms and each is beautifully decorated and unique. the bar was bright and yet private, the bartender was extremely pleasant. breakfast was the best of my visit to italy with lots of different items laid out in a beautiful room with crystal and silver. the hotel is right on the canal and everything is within a lovely walk. i sat outside on two occasions sipping wine and cappucino and just admired the view.
the only downside of this hotel is that it has a rooftop bar that was not open. it only opens in the spring and i was there in february/march. other than that i would highly recommend this hotel. i was traveling solo but several of my cotravelers were couples and two were families and everyone loved it. i would absolutely stay there again!

Me and my family had a very great time since the very first moment. We received a very unique welcome and so many gentle cares during our entire stay. The entire Hotel is a fantastic style experience. So unique. Rooms are cosy and elegant; clean and bright. We loved the sitting rooms and ejoyed the happy atmosphere, the music and the drink prepared by the very nice and friendly barman. The drink before dinner became our most beloved moment of the day.
We will go bck again.

It has been a pleasure to be in this tiny boutique hotel. I appreciated the hindness and efficiency of the personnel and felt like at home.
The room was nice clean and the silence was complete.
The breakfast various for all tastes, self serviced but with a couple of very gently waiters that helped to mantain the tables in order and filled with fresh food.
It is present a nuce bar with many rooms where you can stay during the day in order to have a rest.
I definitely recommend this hotel that is about 800m from the city center and you can avoid use taxi or public transportation (that is present anyway).
Around the hotel is full of restaurants that are out from the massive flux of tourists and that represent the true kind of Florebce cousine (beside the zone there are also ethnik restaurants of all kinds)

My mum offered me a short holiday in Florence in her preferred boutique hotel, Cellai Boutique Hotel. I loved it the personnel was just lovely and helpful; the atmosphere we could breathe was like a home I felt a cozy and homey atmosphere thanks to the decorations and kidness of the personnel. The buffet breakfast is simply magic lots of good food. the room clean and spacious was simply perfect. My mum was right and couldn't make me a better gift. It became my fav spot too

We were here in the "before times" (2019) and we returned this last month. It was even better than the last time, not an easy feat given the pandemic. The staff is welcoming and helpful (and many were the same as our last visit). Our room was much more spacious than the last time, so ask about the sizes of the rooms when you book. There is a wonderful breakfast with a a wide variety of pastries, eggs, juice, yogurt and cheese included and the breakfast staff is also very friendly and helpful. I would suggest the rooftop terrace later at night to relax. (If you climb up the steps once there you can see the Duomo). If you have a disability, please note that there are 4-5 steps you have to climb to get to the elevator. We told them it was our anniversary and they left us a nice bottle of wine in our room. The location is a bit of a walk from the Duomo (maybe 10-15 minutes) and about a mile to the Ponte Vecchio and a shorter walk to the Mercato Centrale. The Wifi comes and goes at times. This is not a business hotel but more geared to couples or solo travelers. There were a lot of Italians there early in our trip and then more Brits. I emailed them several times after I had made the reservation and they responded promptly and made a dinner reservation that I had requested. The price was very reasonable. Highly recommended.

Our 10 day journey in Italy had been absolutely fabulous until arriving in Florence on day 7. We specifically requested 5 star accommodations from our travel agent for each city as she delivered successfully. Our accommodations in Rome & Sorento were absolutely breathtaking. The customer service is superb, the room was clean and beautiful, & the over ambience was inviting. However, even tho Hotel Cellai is a 4 star hotel, our experience was the complete opposite to the others. When we arrived, we were not even spoken to when walking in from the airport. After checking in, we were not assisted with our luggage to the room. Walking through the hotel leading to our room, we noticed that the hotel was much much more vintage and historic than we had researched & even though we prefer a slight more compromise towards modern, we still gave it fair chance. During our stay exiting and entering the hotel several times, we noticed that the front desk staff was much more friendlier and spoke to those that spoke Italian rather than us English speaking American women. There was an deadly awful sewage smell through our the stairway and on our floor that bled into our room. So unpleasant! We notified the front desk gentleman and he responded “oh I thought I smelt something we just don’t know what it is” and that was it. Between the staff being uninviting, the sewage smell in the entire building, the WiFi not working in the room, the eerie ancient artifacts all over the walls, and the over creepy ambience we felt during our entire stay, it’s safe to say we would not be returning to the hotel ever again. To be clear, we will not discredit or discourage anyone who enjoys boutique hotels as we certainly do as well. However, even though this was too far on our spectrum, the staff, a clean functioning & inviting environment would’ve made us feel much much better. The only positive to our stay was the spacious shower and it’s hot water! Ciao!

Response from Maria Cristina Bianchi, Owner at Hotel Cellai
Responded 2 Nov 2021
Dear Dominique, I apreciate all reviews, the good and the bad ones, but I am having a bit of difficulties in understanding yours. It seems like that you have never stayed in our House. I understand that your travel agent booked for you a different Hotel and this Hotel did not honour your reservation but we offered you our hospitality and our welcome. Receiving your anger in exchange for the error of your travel agent is not the coin we deserve. But I understand human nature as this is part of my mission. All our staff speaks fluently english, one of our front desk manager is actually British and another one is a professional literature translater. All the other front desk manager are fluent also in english as they all have an university degree in foreign languages. We all write, speak and many times think in english. Our barman speaks French, English and Italian and so do also the breakfast staff and some of the beautiful people that toke care of cleaning your room during your stay. We keep our atmosphere very friendly and very italian and we all adore speaking with all our guests. It sounds very unusual that you had no chance of meeting all these extraordinary people. WIFI works very well as we have the fastest line available in Florence. Guests simply need to connect with the internet gate and enjoy a free and fast connection. In your review there is no comment about our charming breakfast with our home made cakes and the smiling staff welcoming guests every morning. There is also no comment about the unique decoration of our Hotel and the original antiques and artworks displayed allover. It also seems that you never saw our roof garden, our library, our bar, and all the cosy and nicely decorated sitting rooms of the House. I really look forward really meeting you one day in our house and show you and explain you the extraordinary and adventurous story of this Hotel. We all wish you all best Maria Cristina Bianchi

We spent 9 nights here in March of 2023 and the next time we are in Florence we will certainly return.
The hotel is charming and well decorated with great vintage pictures and books of all sorts. The presence of the owner and other family on a daily basis show they care and remain very involved in the daily operations.
We were upgraded to a large room which was clean, comfortable and everything worked. Water pressure, hot water and other basic functions worked well. The bed was comfortable. Not that we watched much TV but we noted at least one English Channel, BBC world. The daily breakfast was quite comprehensive and the items restocked regularly, in addition any special requests such as cappuccino etc were taken care of quickly. The room in which breakfast happens is brightened up by a skylight.
The staff are great and Ahmed at the Bar and Ibdi at breakfast as well the front desk staff were helpful, friendly and had some great suggestions for restaurants. The bar is a great place to unwind and chat with other travellers.
The location of the hotel is good and a 10 minute walk from the train station and the central market and about 15 to the San Lorenzo Basilica. The Academia is also about 10 minutes by foot. Most other points of interest are also within easy walking distance including some great restaurants (Caffagi on Via Guelfa and the dining area on the second floor of the mercato as well as Za Za, right beside the hotel there is also Fuoco Matto- I strongly suggest reservations for Caffagi, Za Za and Fuoco Matto)
A few things to note, some of the rooms are quite small and there are a few stairs to the small elevator. However it is Europe and we found even the smaller rooms we saw to be consistent with others in other cities.
Overall, we found the hotel to be excellent value and we cannot wait to return.

This is the place we fell in love with during our European trip.
We found it the more original and charming hotel we have stayed in.
This place is like a stylish decoration shop full of exciting furnitures and artworks and each single corner hides a gem. Just awsome!
Rooms are so special and breakfast is great and relaxing. Cappuccino is the best we ever had.
People are great, so kind and friendly and made us feel part of a very special event when we were invidet to the art vernissage taking place in the Hotel.
100% would stay again!
