Unfortunately we had only a one night stay at Al Gallion, we arrived at 12md following a ferry journey from Croatia, an hour earlier than I had indicated and were warmly welcomed by Emmanuel and his sister. We were shown our suite then Emmanuel told us about Venice. He recommended an Osteria, Alba Nova for lunch and booked a table,...

Great little B&B! Daniella, the host, couldn't have been more helpful! Gave us a map and advised on places to visit, places to eat and even bus routes! We avoided a weekend hospital visit for a prescription because she knew the pharmacist down the road. Room was very clean, bathroom only a few steps away and always clean. Access to...

We stayed at Al Gallion for 4 nights at the beginning of June, our last stop in Italy after a 23 day tour. Venice was our favourite city in Italy and this was our favourite B&B. The location, in Santa Croce, was fantastic. It was a short stroll from the train station using the easy to follow map posted on...

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.

“Hard to find as it is truly a wooden door in a 16 th century wall. No big sign just a faded number above the door and a small- very small brass plaque on the door!”
