We stayed at this BNB for 2 nights during carnival. It was quite easy to find which we were surprised by. The host is so welcoming. Upon check in she gives you a map and recommends restaurants in the area. The building is very impressive - an old palace. We loved the decor and the whole feel of the place....

A b&b near Hospital in Castillo. On a square with restaurants. Surprisingly close to St Marco square and Rialto but without the crowds. Large common area. Very authentic room room etc. Themed rooms. We had Japan- a bit funny in Venice, but I guess the orient was the theme! Good breakfast Good staff. No lift but on first floor.

Wonderful experience at this B & B situated in historic building overlooking the Campo Santa Maria Formosa. We were very impressed with the spacious beautiful rooms, the view from the dining room and the wonderfully helpful host. Take note of the photo provided in arrival email as a bit difficult to find first time as up on first floor. However...

It was my first time in Venice and the same for my chinese wife...I can say Venice is the most beautiful city i had ever visited. "La Porta d' Oriente" is a great place to stay, wonderful palace 10 minutes walking from San Marco. Nice room, nice owner, very good breakfast, for us everything was perfect: I 100% recommend this...

We stayed at this 15th century bulding for couple of nights and were really surprised. The antique furniture, rooms and the area, even a ghost of the previouse owner who keeps an eye on it. The host of the place Segnora Cinzia is awesome lady! My famaly usually stay in 5 stars hotel but with her we felt as we...

This is a charming palace with 3 living quarters. We were in the Venetian themed place. The best thing about this place was the host, Cynthia. She was so warm, welcoming and friendly, that we felt we were visiting family. However, loving this place of history is a bit of acquired taste. The bathroom facilities are very poor and the...

I have dreamed of visiting Venice since I was a little girl and not having the budget of George Clooney for the Moresco Hotel, (and because I have a penchant for the personal touch of B&B’s over big resorts anyway [preferring the quiet home away from home aspect]) picked La Porta. To this end, it is an absolute gem, in...

I chose this location based on reviews from TripAdvisor and Booking. Was sorely disappointed and it' has really put me off B & B's. The musty smell at the entrance was musty. I don't like musty. The home had this overpowering aroma of something. Probably not terrible in smaller doses but not for me. The room was nice on the...

Nicolleta and CInza were delightful to work with during our stay and the palazzo is maintained with an authentic feel. You need to be able to deal with stairs and 3 keys to enter and exit, so beware if this is a problem for you. Other than that, the location is great -just off the beaten path of tourist hordes...

What made the city break extra special was the hostess of this property (obviously not the owner). We stayed for 4 nights (2-6September). I am only adding this information so that the owner can appreciate what a wonderful person she has who takes care of her visitors. The accomodation itself is unique! Don't go and expect a modern or boutique...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

“The Zen room was ideal for us, but note the bed is very firm. If you open the window you will hear occasional voices and noises from people walking the street below, but these did not put us off (and Venice tends to go to bed fairly early).”
