It was unseasonably hot when we 'found' the Maurizio. We had been staying in an unbearably hot and noisy room in Piazza Margherita. We felt lucky they had a room for us, and it turned out to be a beautiful room with air conditioning. Even when the heat broke and it began to rain, we were glad for the cool,...

The hotel is near enough to San Marco that getting to it in minutes is completely possible. Our room was clean and the best pillows we have found in Europe. The room has been rather quiet with ambient noise during peak times. Yes, the air conditioner works hard, when it is this hot & humid it does feel good, it...

Hotel San Maurizio ticked all the boxes. It's in a great location, close to the vapiertto. The room was well kept, whilst not overly big, spacious enough, similar size to most other accommodation we've had in Europe. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Their English was fantastic which made things easier for us. They were happy to answer...

It took a while to get to this hotel from Treviso airport, a shuttle bus (40 mins) then a water bus (Vaparetto) 45 minutes but then it was a short 3 minute walk from Gigilo. Once you're there the journey is worth while due to how central it is. The hotel had a electrical gate, which made the venue feel...

We were two American backpackers passing through Venice. We found this place when looking for a hostel (unsuccessfully) for a while. The price was about $100 U.S. dollars per night for two twin sized beds. (Not stacked, though!) The place was very clean. The style was very venetian and we enjoyed the stay. The linens are a bit worn, but...

Stayed at this hotel in the end of May 2012 and did not like the stay. Admittedly, the location is excellent - quick walk to major attractions, but there's too many strikes against this place. Most importantly, the air conditioner in our room was not powerful enough. Despite running the entire time, the room was like an oven and sleeping...

We stayed two nights in this hotel. It is in a really excellent location - in the busy San Marco area, and only a short walk from the water bus. The double room was pretty and spotlessly clean. The en suite bathroom was also spotless, modern and with a good shower and plenty of hot water. The hotel staff on...

My friend and I were recommeded this place by another friend and what a good find in all the confusion of such a large place like Venice. It's a 5min walk to Marco square on little side street. The front desk staff were so friendly and helpful. If you can stay in the hotel part as you get a private...

I stayed here for one night on Feb 3rd 2012 it is a little difficult to find but very central. I was pleasantly surprised with my accidental stay here. Was switched to this place due to construction at their sister hotel, but it wasn't too much of an inconvenience. First time in Venice and managed to find the place without a map or phone at 10:00 at night, after about 1 hour of rolling our poor suitcases around. But the...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
