We stayed here both at the beginning of our trip and the end. The first room we had was quite large with 2 bedrooms and room for 4 even though it was just me and my mother. The first room was nice but we blew a fuse immediately and the power turned off and then it was very hot and...

Just returned from a 4 day trip to Venice. I chose this hotel as I wanted to be in the center. The location was brilliant, just a 2 minute walk from St Marks Square. The reception area wasn't bad and the reception staff very helpful. However the rest of the hotel was very disappointing. I booked a double room with...

The room was extremely small, the size of a walk in closet. The beds were very small twins on a metal frame with one pillow. Since the air conditioning was off, it was hot, and loud with the windows open. I was told it was too cold for AC, but it was about 78 degrees outside, and hotter inside. SInce...

Well, the hotel sounded splendid. Photos looked fab. Unfortunately, the reality was somewhat different. We were given a small, pokey, dark room, with no view. There seemed to be underfloor heating. It was stifling. There was an air conditioning monstrosity behind the door, but it wasn't working. The cramped en-suite was just as gloomy, with a window that didn't close....

This hotel has a great location, but that is all. Our room was so small we could not unpack both our cases at the same time! We had a light fitting falling off the wall and a bath plug that was useless, all reported but not fixed by the time we left. Very friendly staff however. There is a small...

We couldn't believe how close we were to St Marks Square. What a Base to explore. Gondola right outside the entrance. Hotel clean and comfortable. Breakfast was amazing. Not much of a walk to the boat back to the airport. Really pleased with our hotel choice. Thank you!

The Royal San Marco is in a good location, a few steps away from the Piazza San Marco, but far enough to be away from the noise there. The front desk staff is warm and polite. However, it is situated on a small side canal, and as others have noted, in warm weather you'd get the unpleasant smell of the...

Stayed in this hotel as an anniversary celebration. The room was stunning however the flooring was missing in places and it needs repainting. Luckily we didn't spend much time in the room. The walls are thin as well so we could hear our neighbours conversations. The reception was to the point however I didn't feel a particularly friendly welcome. We...

Visited for one night, so glad it wasn't two. Room small & smelly. Carpet stained and worn. Bathroom has seen better days & the staff were uninterested in us as guests. Shame because has a great location and the reason for the two stars rather than one.

I was traveling with my aunt and my elderly mother, so we needed a room that would sleep 3 comfortably. Was pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a suite upon check-in. The room was nicely appointed and quite spacious. The staff was very helpful and efficient. We enjoyed the (included) breakfast that got our day in Venice off to a...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
