We stayed here in July 2012. It is really easy to find - just take one of the ferry's outside the train station to Giglio station. It is a 2 minute walk from that stop. The hotel itself is quite old, dated and rundown. There are many stairs and the lifts only go up to level 2 - which makes...

This hotel was clean and well priced with a good buffet breakfast. We over looked the canal which was perfect. Again because there was a heat wave the air conditioning could not keep up but for our two night stay it was good. The bar was excellent and cool and when our friend needed to rest after we checked out...

With courteous service, impressive design, and spacious, high-ceilinged rooms, the Best Western Ala Venice was a steal at under 150$ a night and a place I wish I could have spent more than one night in. Let’s get my one negative out of the way first – the wifi was terrible. I could barely get anything to load and they...

We booked Hotel Ala for 2 nights after our cruise. We really liked the location, we could walk to all the tourist spots. Our room was fine, it was a deluxe corner room, with view of the side canal and 2 bridges. I find most rooms in Europe small but this was okay for a few nights. Our room had...

The Hotel Ala has just got better the longer I know it! It is my hotel of choice when in Venice - and I often recommend it to friends. From the bustling breakfast rooms to the quiet lounge and friendly bar - there is something for every need here. Particularly noteworthy is the location- on a lovely little square, which...

The hotel location is very good. We arrived by train and had 3 nights reservation. The location is just 1 min away from the Vaparetto stop. The hotel staff is friendly and they are ready to answer and help you with all your questions. Their breakfast is very good and they have a variety of food available. The room is...

Just got back from beautiful, hot, wonderful Venice. Hotel Ala is a good place to stay. Great location. The rooms are a nice size but my 6ft husband had to squeeze into the shower cubicle, it was so tiny! Perhaps they would have given us a different room had we asked, but we just laughed it off. We could hear...

We stayed for 4 ights and loved it. The room was very good with high ceilings and and a balcony overlooking a canal. Good location. The Hotel has it's own dock and is close to a Water Bus stop. Easy walking distance to St Mark's but also easy to find less busy squares and resauants. The Hotel provides a complementary...

My family and I recently stayed at this hotel for 3 nights, a friend had suggested it. What a mistake: a/c did not work well - when we approached the manager, his response was " what do you expect, its hot out". We killed bugs in the bathroom, and spiders in the beds!! The room was not decorated, it existed,...

We stayed here for one night with my parents prior to a cruise and had two canal view rooms. The hotel is very convenient, next to a vaporetto stop (Giglio) and within easy walking distance of St Mark's Square. Our rooms were pleasantly decorated with high ceilings and immaculately clean bathrooms. The buffet breakfast was fine although the breakfast room...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
