Location: Perhaps an 8 minute walk to St. Mark's and maybe a 12 min walk to Rialto. The Vaporetto Giglio station is on the same street as the hotel, perhaps a minute walk, which is great because Venice is a bit confusing when you first arrive. There's a decent, sit down good restaurant with outdoor seating right outside the hotel....

We stayed in Hotel Ala from April 25 to April 28, 2017. It is in a nice area and is centrally located. It is a short walking distance to most of the famous attractions in Venice and is just a few minutes from the water taxis. The rooms are small but very clean and nicely decorated. The breakfast was very...

This hotel's best selling point is location. It's a few steps from the vaporetto stop on the Grand Canal, so no need to be lost looking for the hotel while hauling luggage. It's easy walking distance to main attractions especially San Marco. Vibrant location during the day but not extremely crowded, while also quiet at night. The staff was very...

This quaint, historical hotel should have more stars, except for the following: no air conditioning even though advertised with same, non-working refrigerator, and a very hard mattress. The weather was too humid to not have working air conditioning. They did give us a desk fan but it was not sufficient to be cool at night. Our room had an additional...

Hotel Ala is an exceptional hotel, it is so well situated just off San Marco. The staff are very friendly, the room was lovely even although it did not overlook the canal. Tea and coffee making facilities are available in the room which is unusual for a European hotel. Breakfast in the morning was super, everything you could ask for...

This was our first time in Venice. Stayed at the Hotel Ala. The hotel is in an ideal location, close to all the sites. The hotel was lovely. Room was spacious and very clean. Staff were very helpful and accommodating. Breakfast was buffet style. There was always something to choose from. The quality and standard of the hotel was first...

Great central location but still good in that it was still a little off the main tourist drag, lively downstairs bar and cool roof top terrace. That's where the positives end. The room was OK but a bit dated, service polite but not friendly, breakfast (despite other reviews) the average type of buffet style you get at mid-market places and...

Hotel Ala was perfectly situated - a few minutes from St. Mark's Square in one direction and an easy stroll to the Accademia and Guggenheim Museums in the other. Just steps from a vaporetto stop as well. The staff was helpful in many ways, from restaurant suggestions to assistance with water taxis. One evening my significant other bought me several...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
