Compared with the prices of other accommodation in the center of Venice, the price of Hotel Caneva was still very reasonable, actually the cheapest we could get for such a central location. If you expect luxury, this is a wrong place, but if you want the stay in the heart of Venice within a walking distance to all touristic attractions...

Ignore all of these awful reviews these people are obviously just difficult and expect far too much from a 1 star hotel!! We arrived yesterday, people on reception were more than helpful check in was nice and easy. The courtyard itself is charming very in touch with the Venice look. The rooms are standard and you get what you pay...

On check in we were given a room that stank of smoke. When we raised this issue with the receptionist he denied this was possible as it was a non-smoking hotel but after some persuasion came to the room and agreed it was a very strong smell. We asked to move room but this was not possible. After about 10...

We arrived after 2 hours to try and find place. There was a man (short and grey hair with fleece) didn't catch his name at the reception who did not smile/speak or look at us. We tried making conversation and he shrugged his shoulders.. think we interrupted his film he was watching at reception. He then spoke fluent English when...

I liked this hotel, the place is great and staff are ok as well. If you are looking for something fancy this is not the place for you, the hotel is ok but it is a basic room. The bed is comfortable and pretty clean. What I love in this hotel was the fact that the had a little veranda...

They send you a childish looking map with your booking - don't dismiss it! Google maps can't take you there because of the alley way. Follow the map and you will find it. So prior to that, starting from the train station, you take a boat bus to the Rialto bridge which obviously you cannot miss, this takes maybe 15...

A bit hostel-like but the place was very clean, though the carpet on the stairs up were a bit worn. We stayed for 3 nights for 160 euros which is very good value for money for it being right in the centre. The hotel is near Rialto Bridge and 5 minutes walk to St Mark's Basilica. Our room had a...

The wifi does not work properly. I have to leave the hotel for restaurant wifi to contact my family back home. My room #42 has a cute (dangerous) balcony onto a canal that has loud garbage boats from about 7am onwards. My room is also next to the breakfast room which from very early is also very noisy from crockery...

We had a wonderfully unique experience at Hotel Caneva after we booked the separate apartment building just around the corner from the hotel. We booked on booking.com for £26 a night which was incredible for Venice and we ended up with a massive two bedroom apartment! The apartment was up two huge flights of stairs with no lift which may...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
