This March we stayed at Hotel Fontana for the tenth time. Diego and Gabriele are the best. Every stay we learn more about Venice, given their tips on how to best access and appreciate this amazing city. And the hotel just gets better and better all the time.

As usual, my stay was enhanced by the kindness, courtesy and friendliness of this long running family hotel and its staff. It has been a privilege to have stayed here at the Fontana over 23+ years and I look forward to many more stays to come. Surely that is a testimonial in itself. I have also recommended numerous family, friends...

The hotel would have been very pleasant, if not for the mosquitos. Great central location and friendly staff. The walls in the hotel are covered in little black dots of mosquito remains from previous residents trying to rid their room of the pests. I closed all the windows and was careful not to let any in. But every night all...

Dear Sir, I'm really sorry for the accident with mosquitos, but there is not much we can do... Anyway all the rooms are equipped with mosquito repellers to be used if necessary, I guess you did not find it. I just would say that if everything else was enjoyable (thank you for mentioned it), it is not right to give...

Finding your hotel is easy as it is five minutes from the San Zacharrio vaparetto station. When you arrive, you are royally welcomed and efficiently checked in. The room (No 2) was quaint but roomy and had a comfortable bed. The bathroom is compact and the only difficulty is taking a shower standing in the foot well of a hip-bath....

Great hotel for a quick stay. Bathroom is small and the shower was extra small. The reception and bar area is inviting and lovely. Didn't get to stay for breakfast but heard it is delicious. Very nice they have a lift for over packers!

Just back from a second visit to this great hotel. This family run hotel is in a excellent location, very near to St Marks square & very convenient to San Zaccaria water bus station. If you need advice on what tours & where to eat, the family are more then happy to advise you. Unlike most small hotels in Venice...

This was our first trip to Venice and we were very nervous about find the hotel and having it be in a good location. This perfect little place was only a few walking blocks from the airbus - easy to find and exactly where we wanted to be. We were minutes away from just about everything we wanted to do...

Some people who write reviews seem to forget (or ignore) that the Fontana is a 3 star hotel and, as such, it is an admirable place to stay. Geographically, it is positioned perfectly in central Venice with good restaurants nearby. The other main advantage, for us oldies that is, it is a short walk and there are no bridges to...

Clean room and bathroom. Friendly, helpful staff who spoke English well! Great location near San Marco! Breakfast was adequate for a good start each morning. Good value for the money! Would stay here again!

The room was clean and well looked after. The location was perfect just three minutes from St Marks square. Nice and quite at night > NB this was the end of Carnival. Breakfast was very good except the coffee and juice which was made by a machine and the coffee was bitter.

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
